COMMANDING OFFICER Commander Leo A. Cangianelli, a native of Luke, Maryland, entered the United States Navy in July 1960 after graduating from Frostburg State College, Frostburg, Maryland with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Prior to entering the Navy Commander Cangianelli served in the Naval Reserve in an enlisted status from 1956 to 1960 and received his commission in June 1960 through the Reserve Oflicers Candidate Program. Upon graduation and commissioning he reported to the USS VALLEY FORGE CCVS-45D flater LPH-81. After his initial tour on VALLEY FORGE Commander Cangianelli left the Navy to teach one year of Mathematics at Severna Park, Maryland. In July 1964 he re-entered the Navy and served aboard USS KING QDLG-10D as CIC Officer. From April 1966 until September 1967 he served as Operations Oilicer on board USS SELLERS CDDG-111 homeported at Charleston, South Carolina. In October 1967 he was ordered to tl1e Staff of the Flag Oiiicer Aircraft Carriers and Amphibious Ships at Portsmouth, England as an Exchange Oilicer serving aboard the Staff Flagships HMS EAGLE and HMS ARK ROYAL. After his tour in England he reported as Damage Control Assistant aboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY QCVA-671 From September 1972 until February 1974 he was assigned to the Naval Command Systems Support Activity, Washington, D.C. as a Proj ect Oflicer for the World Wide Military Command and Control System. Prior to being ordered to USS LAWRENCE QDDG-lil he served as Executive Officer USS LA SALLE QAGF-35 homeported at Bahrain Island in the Persian Gulf. Commander Cangianelli holds the following awards and campaign ribbons, Navy Achievement Medal 12nd awardj, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal Q2 stars J, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Commander Cangianelli is married to the former Jeanne V. Carlson of Baltiinore, Maryland. They reside with their four children Joseph, Matthew, Jo Anna and Bethany in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
