Poole SM3 M. au ey esing NGIN EERING Unlike the Weapons Department with their assorted noise- makers, skyfireworks and Star Trek consoles, or the Operations Department with their multitudes of radios and festive flag plumage, the Engineering Department has at its disposal only limited methods of attracting attention: we can shut out the lights and stop the ship. During our Mediterranean deployment we rather carefully exercised this power when it proved to our advantage, and even though the powers-that-be and the other departments thundered insults in our direction, we know they furtively smiled when we departed Norfolk a day late, pilfered a couple of extra days in sunny San Juan, and spent an unscheduled week in exotic Naples. We did manage to squeeze 31,587 miles out of the Lawrence, although it cost us 2,363,994 gallons of fuel, about half of which was used to saturate our uniforms so that we looked busy. We don't feel we've been done an injustice in that all of our spaces are below the main deck and have no portholes through which to view the wonders of the world, nor do we feel resentful because our job is the hottest and dirtiest in the Navy. But it has taken a considerable amount of effort to convince the other departments that without us they go nowhere. .lust ask a weapons man how dull it is when the Christmas tree lights on his console go out, or ask a radioman how much fun it is to write messages in the dark and float them off the ship in bottles. Or ask the Captain about shiphandling at the mercy of the wind and current. 'Y K n44W.,,.maaqMK LCDR M. G. BELL CHIEF ENGINEER On second thought. . . H Af. ,ff f Division J LTJG J. T. This service is provided in five different areas: disbursingg commissary, repair parts management, wardroomg and ship's store, including barbershop, laundry, and retail outlet. The overall excellence' of the department was twice rec- ognized by those outside the command. Lawrence was awarded the Squadron Supply Efficiency E for excellence in Supply management, and the commissary operation was recognized in the Captain F. F. Ney competition as being the best small mess afloat in the Norfolk area. During the deployment, 'approximately 200,000 rations were served in the crew's mess, disbursing personnel made payments of 35506,000, members of the crew spent nearly 3B100,000 in the ship's store, and the ship's laundry washed more than 223,750 pounds of clothing.
