john marlan poindexter was born in washington, indiana On 12 august 1936, he graduated from high school in oden, indiana and entered the united states naval academy in iune 1954. after graduation from the naval academy on 4 june 1958 he served as electronics material officer of the uss holder fdde- 8195. in august 1959 he continued his education under the junior line officer advanced scientific edu- ational program. he began a course of studies in nuclear physics at california institute of technology leading to a master of science degree in physics in june 1961 and a doctor of phi- losophy degree in june 1964. lie u t e n an t commander poin- dexter was then assigned as assistant engineer officer of the uss prebble fdlg-151, from sep- tember to december 1964 he attended the crudespac engine- ering school. he returned to sea as chief engineer of the uss william v. pratt fdlg-135. in the summer of 1966 he began a shore tour as a staff member of the manpower requirements directorate office of the assist- ant secretary of defense fsystem analysisy, lieutanant commander poindexter re- ported to uss lawrence fddg-4y as executive officer in sep- tember 1969. lieutenant c o m m a n d e r poin- dexter is authorized to wear the meritorious service a n d national defense service medals. he is married to the former linda goodwin of indianapolis, indiana and they have four sons, daniel, alan, mark, and thomas.
