LAWRENCE USN 1781-1813 James Lawrence was born in Burlington, New Iersey, on 1 October, 1781. He entered the Navy as Midshipman on 4 September, 1798. His first action was during the war with Tripoli, 1801-05, during which he commanded Gun Boat No. 6. and gained a reputation for gallantry. Following the Tripoli War Law- rence served as F irst' Lieutenant in Constitution and then commanded Vixen. Wasp, Argus, and Hornet. Following the outbreak of war with England, he took Hornet to sea in the squadron of Commodore Iohn Rogers, taking three of the seven prizes cap- tured by the squadron. Later, he achieved great fame for his brilliant victory in Hornet over the British brig Peacock. Lawrence returned to America in March of 1813, was promoted to Cap- tain, and took command of the frigate Chesapeake. He sailed from Boston on 1 lune and engaged the British frigate Shannon in a furious action in which Chesapeake was exposed to a raking fire. Though the ship was helpless and Lawrence mortally wounded, he rallied his crew urging them to Fight Her Till She Sinks and Don't Give Up The Ship . He died at sea on 5 Iune 1813, and was interred by the British with full honors at Halifax, later to be buried at Trinity Church in New York on 16 September, 1813. His words have served as his Navy's battle cry and as an inspiration to all United States sailormen.
