richard glenn murphy, a graduate of the naval academy, spent his early naval career aboard uss princeton cvs-37 and uss cogswell dd-651. his first shore tour was spent at the naval academy where he served as weapons instructor. commander murphy returned to sea in the summer of 1961 and served as executive officer aboard uss daniel a. joy de-585, and uss van voorhis de-1028. he then attended the u. s. naval post graduate school which led to a master of science degree in management and returned to sea as commanding officer of uss gallant mso-489 in june 1964. his next assignment was in the bureau of naval personnel, where he served as a placement officer in the officer distribution division. from august 1968 until january 1969 he attended the armed forces staff college in norfolk, virginia. in march 1969 he began a years tour with the u. s. naval forces in vietnam where he served successively as commander, van co river interdiction group, commander, river assault squadrons eleven and thirteen, and as the sealords operations officer. commander murphy assumed command of lawrence in civitavecchia, italy on 3 may 1970. he is married to the former lynn kidd of baltimore, maryland and they have three daughters, mary, nancy, and joanne, and a son, richard.
