in command 14 december 1968-3 may 1970 ui cdr daniel i costello usn commanding officer after having graduated from holy cross college Worcester, massachusetts commander costello served with uss newman k. perry ddr-883, the staff of the commander of naval forces eastern atlantic and med- iterranean, the commander of naval support activities naples, italy, and uss moale dd-693. he subsequently assumed command of uss harkness mhc-1 in january 1957 and with several more years sea duty became commanding officer of uss pillsbury der-133 and later of uss hissem der-400. he then returned to school in september 1961 to pursue a master of arts degree in law and diplomacy which was conferred in 1963. that year he assumed duties as executive officer aboard uss william v. pratt dlg-13 followed by an assignment of administrative assistance to the commandant of the marine corp in washington. returning to school again led to the completion of his doctoral studies in philosophy and after a series of technical courses he reported to uss lawrence ddg-4 to relieve as commanding officer. he is married to the former chantal olleris of dijon, france. commander and mrs. costello have three sons, patrick, eric, and geraldg and three daughters, carol, nadine, and dominique.
