Baseball and softball games, as well as track meets, filled the days of the spring calendar. LV students also enjoyed the Spring fling and helped the American Red Cross with a successful blood drive. 3 ' 'SA Y YOU, SA Y ME' 1986 PROM The 1986 Prom, Say You, Say Me, was held at Seven Springs for the first time. The evening was a great success. The crowning of the queen, Gwen Bucklen, took place in the high school auditorium before the couples boarded charter buses for the trip to Seven Springs. Following an evening of dancing and socializing, the post-prom committee treated the guests to swimming, bowling, and a hypnotism exhibition. Owen Buckien is crowned From Queen for 1986. 4 L.V. AT WORK, REST AND FLAY 5 REMEMBERING OUR NEIGHBORS On July 19-20,1977, a flood struck our valley, devastating homes and lives. In spite of the flood, people proved their endurance. They rebuilt their communities and went forward with their lives. In this, the tenth anniversary year of the disaster, we not only remember the flood as a tragedy, but also as an obstacle that many people faced and overcame. Betz, a 1985 Laurel Valley graduate, passed away on September24. 1986, following a serious illness. A capable vocational student. Dave excelled in his machine shop courses. Always a friend, he never had less than a kind word or cheerful smile for those he met along the way. Though his lifetime was short, it was full of life, and our memories of him will remain with us in the years to come. Laura Ann Rosen steel, a 1986 Laurel Valley graduate, was fatally injured in an automobile accident on September28, 1986. Students here will fondly remember her in many ways. As a majorette, she entertained us. She made us laugh with her sense of humor and she consoled us when we just needed someone to listen. Those who knew her will remember that she truly could be described by the word friend, her memory will forever be treasured at Laurel Valley. LIVING FOR TODA Y In living for today, one experiences the joys, the sorrows, the friendships, and even the boredom of everyday life. Enjoying life as it happens is as exciting as Finding out that a test thought to have been failed was actually passed with flying colors, or realizing that after all of the practicing, a game or a band competition has been won. 8 I 9 Some students play for fun — 10 some have fun playing HOMECOMING The high spirits and smiling faces of our Homecoming Court helped everyone to forget the rain and mud that threatened to spoil Homecoming 1986. Scott Bernabo and Patricia Gehring were crowned Bing and Queen during the halftime festivities by 1985 Queen Karen Gehring. Our fighting Rams scored 14 points but could only manage a tie with their opponents from Ferndale. Later in the day many couples attended the Homecoming Dance where the musical selections offered both began and ended with the Homecoming theme song, Friends and Lovers. . Their futures will vary greatly. Some may pursue careers in chemistry, computers or child care. Others will work in the fields of business and industry. 4s these seniors go their separate ways, yesterday will become but a memory and each tomorrow will bring a new dream. SUCCESSFUL SEASON The 1986 Varsity Rams once again proved their prominence on the gridiron by posting a 7-3-1 record for the season. Under head coach Gerald Page, the Rams fought hard but fell short of an Appalachian Conference title. They did succeed, however, in earning a District 6 playoff berth for the second year in a row. Even though the semi-final game against Blacklick Valley was played in freezing temperatures, the Rams played tough, but unfortunately when the final buzzer rang, they found themselves on the short end of a 16-2 score. The Rams were rewarded when ten seniors were named conference all-stars, the most from any one team in the eastern division of the conference. On Tuesday, April 28 seven new members were induced into the Laurel Valley high School Chapter of the national honor Society. The inductees were selected by a faculty committee based on their scholarship, leadership, character, and service to their school and their communities. In a candlelight ceremony held in the high school auditorium, the new members were informed of the meaning of their selection and their responsibilities to the organization. They were welcomed by MHS president Mark Richards and Mr. Stephen J. Whisdosh, principal. Following the ceremony a reception was held in the cafeteria for parents and guests. DISASTER STAGED On Tuesday, May 12 the Laurel Valley Ambulance Service, along with assistance from Tri-Community Ambulance and the Mew Florence and Fairfield Volunteer Fire Companies, presented a mock disaster drill for the senior high students. In a simulated car-school bus accident involving a drunk driver, members of the participating organizations demonstrated life saving and rescue techniques practiced by the emergency medical technicians and firemen in their time of need. After extricating the injuredparties from the damaged vehicles, EMTs and paramedics provided on-the-spot evaluation of the extent of their trauma and ' treated the victims accordingly. The demonstration ended with the special appearance of a LifeFlight helicopter. The specially-equipped air ambulance landed on the football practice field for possible transport of a seriously injured accident victim. The drill was well-received by all those in attendance. It will help us all realize the importance of our local VOLUM-TEER rescue organizations. STUDENTS WELCOMED Row 1: Mike Stutzman, Michelle Goughnour, Jennifer Browning, Michele Zacur. LV STUDENTS ROAM EAR AND WIDE Senior Trip Although the weather did not cooperate for the Senior trip to Florida, the students made the best of their vacation. Most of the time was spent at Walt Disney World and Epcot where the northerners hob-knobed with Mickey and his friends or lunched in Fans (at Epcot, of course). Side trips to Cocoa Beach and the Kennedy MASA Space Center added to the fun shared by the seniors and their chaperones. The wet, but wonderful, trip ended with a stormy flight out of Orlando airport and a wet return to FA. Band Trip The LV band traveled to Myrtle Beach, liorth Carolina, to compete in the Fies-ta-Val , where they placed first in their class and received a rating of excellent. While in Myrtle Beach, bandsmen went to an amusement park, on a cruise, and to the beach. The favorite activity of those who traveled was the go-cart ride. The students enjoyed testing their driving skills and going fast. The wind-blown activity proved popular with both boys and girls alike. AFS Short-Term Exchanges The AFS short-term exchanges with Fark Ridge fligh School were enjoyable for all. From March 5-9 Fark Ridge students visited LV, staying with members of our local AFS chapter. They visited Seven Springs, Falling Water, and the Powder-mill nature Reserve. Then, from April 30 to May 4, LV students traveled to Fark Ridge, Mew Jersey. They shared classes with the FR students, then toured several new York City tourist sites. Many close friendships were formed in the short period of time shared by the LV and Fark Ridge students. Left: Some band members relaxed on the beach after the parade. Above: Seniors toured ft AS A and got to see many rockets and other spacecraft while in Florida. LIFESTYLES run in the sun The 1987 Spring Fling celebration was held on a bright sunny May afternoon and was enjoyed by both participants and spectators. Mew events presented by the Student Council brought renewed excitement to the day's games. Competition in both the junior and senior high divi- sions was stiff, but all six grades responded to the challenge. The activities began with a sack lunch provided by the cafeteria staff. After a relaxing picnic in the courtyard, everyone moved to the football field where all the contests were staged. Favorites for the spectators were the toilet tissue wrap-up and the whipped cream- lifesaver search. All in all, the afternoon provided a relaxing break from the day-to-day school ritual. STUDENTS On May 21 senior high students were honored during the academic and athletic awards program, numerous scholarships were presented by Mr. Dohoda and representatives of local civic groups. Varsity and junior varsity certificates were given to our athletes. Mr. Whisdosh presented the valedictorian and salu-tatorian awards to Faula Ewt and Darren McClure, respectively. Junior high awards were presented on June 8. The highlight of the day was the naming of Amy Silk and Seth Mundorff to receive the DA ft citizenship awards. HONORED Certificates for perfect attendance as well as recognition for excellence in various subject areas completed the days activities. SHUTTERBUG FEVER Look out, LV, there’s a mad camerman on the loose. The suspect was first confronted on the seniors' trip to Florida disguised as our own Mr. Whisdosh. Everywhere one turned in Florida, he she was sure to find the watchful eye of the video camera scanning the scenery for memorable moments to capture on film. Following the return from the sunny south, Mr. Video reappeared at various school functions during the remainder of the school year. However, only one question remains—who will ever get to view the videos? Laurel Valley students competed at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg s Humanities Day again this year. Students from L K's language classes participated in various categories ranging from prose to art. numerous awards were earned by our students. TRENDS The Class of 1987 found it necessary to stage separate rehearsals for their Commencement exercises. For the first-time ever, an outdoor ceremony was the main priority for the class. The weater cooperated— well, almost—with the practices on the field. However, sensing the need for a backup plan, in case of rain if Joe said it would , the seniors also were asked to endure numerous trial runs for an indoor ceremony. Alternate routes for the exit and entry were practiced as were the various seating arrangements. Fortunately, Joe said it wouldn t until after 7:00 PM, and the outdoor graduation exercises went on as scheduled. Although the threat of rain persisted throughout the commencement exercises, and the wind-blown mortarboards sailed almost like frisbees, the seniors were rewarded with a memorable evening to share with their classmates, friends, and families. BANQUET HONORS YEARBOOK STATES The 1987 yearbook awards banquet was held at the Wildlife Club in Ligonier. A buffet was prepared for members of both the literary and business staffs. The three advisors—Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Kelly and Mr. Wahl—presented each staffer with a specially- designed Laurel emblem. The dinner serves as a reward for a job well-done in the production and financial management of the yearbook. It has become an annual event of great importance and an evening to look forward to for future staffers. NEW STAFF NAMED The time has come for a new group of yearbook staff members to take on the duties and responsibilities that we, the former members, are leaving behind. There are brand new 3R forms waiting to be used and abused. The photofits are just crying to be handled once again. And, Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Kelly are eagerly awaiting a new group of willing and able journalists to train. The times you spend preparing your book of memories will bring laughter and frustration. There will be days that you will think that nothing will be done by the deadline, but all of that hard work pays off in the end. We, the 1987 yearbook staff, do hereby give all rights and authorities for the production of the next Laurel to the 1988 staff. Goodbye and good luck. Row 1: A.J. Missing: Tricia Garland Monday, June 8 marked the final school day for the 1986-87 term. Students anxiously awaited the arrival and imminent departure of the long yellow line”. Plans for vacations and summer employment possibilities were the main topics of conversation as the buses were pulling away. Soon, however, the buses will once again pull up in front of LV, then to discharge students for the beginning of a new year. 1987 Junior -Senior Prom The 1987 Junior-Senior Prom Will You Still Love Pie? was a great success. For the second year in a row, Seven Springs was the sight of prom and post prom activities. Carol Ritenour was crowned queen during the hour-long Grand March at the high school. Following the Grand March, the couples boarded buses for the ride to the mountains. A buffet dinner was served, after which everyone was entertained by the five-member band Ten till Destiny. At midnight, following a change of clothing, the post prom activities began with bowling, swimming, and miniature golf providing most of the entertainment. At 5:00 AM the tired, but happy, entourage departed for their return to the high school. WILL YOU STILL From Queen Carol Ritenour Junior Officers: Front, Sheri Rose with president Scott McCoy. LOVE ME COMMENCEMENT The 1987 graduating class held Its Commencement ceremonies on June 8 at 6:00 FM In the high school stadium. The first-ever outdoor graduation program was highlighted by speeches from valedictorian Faula Ewt. salutatortan Darren McClure, and class president Oreg Fage Thanh you addresses were also given by departing ATS students Lorenzo Bresclanf. Anja Fresdorf. and Laura Rivera. There were tears of both Joy and sorrow shared by many members of the class as they pondered their futures with bright anticipation and high expectations.
