Coaches Page and Bendel led the team to an 11-0 regular season. The Rams competed in the Johnstown Vo-Tech Tournament early in the season. Although they defeated Vo-Tech in the first game they lost to United in a 6-0 shutout. The team progressed through the regular season undefeated until the Kiski Prep Tournament. There the Rams defeated Latrobe by the score of 11-1, but their hopes for a title were cut short as Kiski slid by the Rams 2-1 in the championship. Though unable to capture the championship in either tournament, the Rams did qualify for the Tri-County League championships. In the intersectional playoff, L.V. started off on the right foot by defeating Central Cambria by the score of 13-7. This win allowed L.V. to move into the championship series, a best out of three match-up against Forest Hills. Each team won one of the first two games leading to a showdown for the title. The deciding game saw Forest Hills defeat the Rams by the score 7-5. The Rams finished the season with a 13-4 chart, second in the Tri-County League and first in the hearts of their fans. We, the literary and business staffs collectively, would like to take this opportunity to look back, reflectively, and thank those who helped make the 1984 Laurel a reality, not just a vision. We offer our debt of gratitude to . . . The administration, faculty, and students who gave us fine cooperation on picture days, even though it meant many interruptions. Gradler Studios and Pathfinder Photo who provided us with pictures and answered our calls of distress immediately when we needed pictures in a hurry. Mr. Sylvan Pinto, Josten Company representative, who was here when we needed him to assist with the color section. Joe for leaving his radio in Room 207 to entertain us in our working hours. Mr. Horrell for taking all the pictures we forgot to take on picture day. Jason for brightening our work sessions at Mrs. Bennett’s home. Mrs. Schaller for allowing us to use the library’s electricity to play the radio. B94 radio station for keeping us in tune with the current hits. Jim for making us laugh even on our worst and most busy days. Shon for never complaining when he got stuck with all the impossible layouts. Mr. Wahl who gave much of his personal time to help us meet all our deadlines and provided us with the answers to many of our questions. Mrs. Bennett for donating her time and patience to be our priceless advisor. We find it amazinsr she out ud with us for the whole year. Addendum court In his memory . . . On March 12. 1984, the Laurel Valley area lost a valued friend when Mr. Wayne Howard passed away. His untimely death will leave a void in many of our lives; however, the example he set in living life to its fullest will continue to serve as an inspiration for us to follow in the years to come. Throughout his 29 years of teaching, first at Bolivar High, then at Laurel Valley, and finally for the Ligonier Valley School District, Mr. Howard served as a health and physical education instructor, as well as acting periodically as athletic director, football, baseball, and basketball coach, and club advisor. He worked with hundreds of students in all grade levels from kindergarten through senior high, touching many lives and setting, for all, a shining example by serving God, his family, and his profession in a most admirable way. He was a hometown boy—born and raised in the Bolivar area—who upheld the utmost standards of excellence in all facts of his life. He tried to instill in each of his students the highest ideals possible. He was considerate, kind, tender-hearted, fun-loving, and patient, but he will be remembered most for his sense of humor, his unique laugh, his whistling, and, of course, those ever-present tennis shoes. In his honor, the staff and student body of Laurel Valley High School have established the Wayne Howard Memorial Award, to be presented annually to the senior boy who exemplifies all those ideals that he held high—leadership, sportsmanship, courage, respect, helpfulness, competitiveness, unselfishness, dedication, citizenship, compassion, achievement, guidance, and self-discipline. It is with deep gratitude and sorrow that we say “goodbye” and “thank you to a wonderful man—Mr. Wayne Howard—our friend. v____________________________ v .v, —’. -—’• “ ! V 4 _ . A 4 1' . -.r.
