On the day each of us was born, a tree was beginning its life too. As we grew, it grew. We shared the seasons with the trees; we played in the branches and fallen leaves. At times we've been troubled and in despair, just as the trees have been battered by the winds of winter, but we and the trees have survived each storm. Every day we continue to grow and mature. This yearbook is dedicated to the feelings our trees could not share: happiness, regret, failure, love, and accomplishment. Every page in this book holds a trace of each one. The highpoint of the Grand March was the crowning of Erin Moore as prom queen. Couples then shared special moments during the continuation of the prom and postprom party at the Sheraton Inn. When the festivities ended, the tired but happy couples started home. The long-awaited night had come to an end, but the memories would last a lifetime. 9 Homecoming celebrated at Weller Field On October 22, the Rams defeated Berlin 8-6 at the annual homecoming game. At halftime Bryan Gregory and Jackie Pickup were crowned homecoming king and queen, with Ken Bracken and Suzanne Ritenour as first runners-up. Crisp weather and fallen leaves created the ideal set for Fall Harvest, theme of the homecoming dance. 12 Seniors honored at final game Senior Day is a memorable and somewhat sad occasion. Every student dreams of the day he will be a senior. When the day finally comes we realize how fast the years have gone by. Remember how old the seniors seemed when we were in seventh grade? As seniors, we don't feel quite so big. Groups recognized on senior day included football players, cheerleaders, honor guard, silks, rifle team, majorettes, band members, and pomettes. The football mothers, band mothers, and boosters club made arrangements for programs and corsages. These groups helped make the 1976-77 Senior Day program a very successful and memorable occasion. 13 Temporary inconvenience means —I 1 il Workmen begin the new addition by first laying blocks for Because of temporary doorways, record low temperatures foundation. were set in the corridors of laurel Valley. Any change for the better brings its share of problems. No one guessed what unusual problems the new addition would bring. Drip! Drop! Look, it's raining! So What? In the cafeteria? Lack of parking meant cars stuck in the mud. Who's the new janitor? Quiet! That's a teaclw who dug her car out of the mud. The cold classrooms kept students clad in scarves and coats. When heat finally entered the icy rooms, coats were shed and new personalities emerged. Hi! You look so odd without a coat. Much nicer. Want to go steady ? y Right: Steel framework begins to appear. 14 permanent improvement In the spring of 1976 ground was broken for the new afterward and was progressing rapidly before the school addition. The wing was designed by architects Williams, term ended. The architect's drawing above shows the Shields, Snyder Goas, and was built by general contract- addition as it will appear following completion early or George Danko of Latrobe. Construction began shortly in 1977. The new wing of the building includes, in addition to several traditional classrooms, an art room, a science room, and a student conference center. Both the cafeteria and the kitchen have . been enlarged, as has the business education area. A new athletic field has been built in back of the school, and the driveways and parking areas have been redesigned. An elevator has been installed for the safety and convenience of handicapped students. Mr. Perian and Mr. Allen examine architect's drawings. Nelson, N. Gordon. Mrs. Mary Burkett Head Cook ATHLETICS Varsity Rams provide hometown fans Daily football practices beginning August 18 were long and hot. Cross-country running, sprints, and memorization of plays prepared the Rams for a tough upcoming season. The Rams struggled to a 3-win, 6-loss season. The loss of Jim Leitch and injuries to key players did not help. Another problem was lack of players' experience. However, all game scores were close. Ken Bracken, Dave Bernabo, and Gary Barrow led the running attack. Quarterback Don Harnish handled the offense with Randy Short and Tracy Howe as receivers. A strong defense helped the Rams to intercept passes, recover fumbles, and do a lot of hard hitting. Many underclassmen gained valuable experience which will be used in the '77 season. Guard Mike Howe, running back Ken Bracken, and linebacker Don Harnish were Appalachian Conference stars. Mike also received the Tribune-Democrat Player-Scholar Award. Should I open my eyes now f The Laurel Valley baseball team finished the 1976 season with seven wins and eleven losses. Although they did not have a winning record, the team was happy to succeed in capturing the Marion Center Tournament crown. Practice began the first week of March and workouts were held in the gym or outside, depending on the weather. The Rams' season began April 1 with an exhibition game at La-trobe. April 5 marked the beginning of league play against Penn Cambria, whom the Rams defeated, 9-2. Rain and cold weather played havoc with the schedule at times. The team, which included eight returning lettermen, worked hard and showed great detenuination. Coaches Page and Bendel drilled the boys on fielding, hitting, and pitching. Ken Skiles was considered to be the most effective pitcher with four victories. In the Marion Center Tournament, Ken won both games of a double-header, a very unusual feat. Practice continued during the beginning of the school year for preparation for halftime performances. Each week the band did different and interesting routines making halftime viewing a real entertainment. They played musical favorites such as This Could Be the Start of Something Big, Rhinestone Cowboy, Mighty Mac, and the theme from S.W.A.T. After football season the band worked very hard to present successful concerts at Christmas and in the spring. Honor is, obviously, what the Honor Guard is all about. The banner and flags they carry show respect to the United States, to Pennsylvania, and to Laurel Valley. The two rifles symbolize how we protect the land and places most dear to us. As this is the bicentennial year, a special bicentennial flag was added. The honor guard remains always in the foreground at football games and is the unit that leads the band during parades The girls of the honor guard are chosen with care because they are the unit identifying our school and are responsible for most first impressions of it. Acting as captain this year is Debbie Keiper. Co-captain is senior Barb Machak. Carrying the bicentennial flag is Beth Sutter. Even though they are a new addition to the band, their colorful routines are a great asset to the band. Their brightly-colored uniforms and pom poms are a visual delight. The days were laced with fun and games. Along with my growing up: I’ve developed a personality— I’ve had to measure up; Not only on tests and with teachers— I had to make it with my peers. And now that struggle is over, I feel like shedding tears. I’m going to miss my classmates And the teachers’ constant calls I’m going to miss the notes and such We passed along the halls. With the diploma comes a sad thought: My adolescent years are gone— Now I must face reality. Maranda Conley Class Colors—Silver Blue Class Flower—Yellow Rose Class Motto—Cherish yesterday. Live for today, and dream of tomorrow. 173 CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!
