-v- EVENYE RSOFF MI DTHE Bulldogs Capture Lions Club Trophy Football upsets have become as much a part of Thanks- giving as the traditional turkey dinner. With this in mind, coach Fred Gainer's Bulldogs upset arch rival Seaford 13-12, to break a seven game win- ning streak held by the Jays over Laurel teams the past seven turkey days. Seaford scored first, but the P. A. T. was unsuccessful. Laurel came storming back the next time they had possession of the pigskin, as sophomore standout, Gary Holloway, crashed in on a four yarder to cap a 64-yard march in nine plays. Holloway was later voted the out- standing player of the game by the Laurel-Seaford Jay- cees. The two teams battled scorelessly in the second period and the Bulldogs left the gridiron at halftime with a slim one -point edge, 7-6, thanks to the successful conversion of the P. A. T. following their first touch- down. The Blue Jays gained the advantage on the first series of downs the beginning of the third period, but fatally failed to convert the extra point. Bob Yori's key interception opened the door for Laurel's winning touchdown. The outstanding all around football gridder picked off an aerial and returned it to the Sea- ford 44 yard line late in the third Quarter. Yori also in- tercepted another pass to halt a Blue Jay offensive march. The Bulldogs roared back from the five -point deficit with a third period six-pointer by Edsel Wootten on a three yard run, but failed to connect on the extra point attempt. Nonetheless, the dauntless courage of the Bulldogs paid off and the seven year seige ended with a determined look to the future as the final gun sounded and the scoreboard showed a final, 13-12 BULLDOGS! Seaford now leads the Thanksgiving Day series with Laurel 11-9 -2. Laurel now has possession of the Lions Club trophy which was established in 1946 with the decision to award it to the winning team each year. Seaford has had it per- petually since 1960. This unusual trophy is symbolic of the two communities The base is a du Pont polymer product representing the nylon industry of Seaford. Mounted upon this base is a football carved from a block of walnut from a tree which originally stood on a street in Laurel, represent- ing the woodworking industry that once flourished in the community. The trophy can never be won permanently by either school and it has developed an historical and nostalgic meaning. It is interesting to note that the members of the 1967 football teams were not born at the time the trophy was placed in competition. The care and awarding of the trophy is administered by a committee from each Lions Club following the rules established in 1946 by students and administrators from each of the schools as well as members of the two Lions Clubs. On Tuesday morning, November 28, Ben Hurley, presi- dent of the Seaford Lions, presented the trophy to the Bulldogs before an assembly of the entire student body. Receiving the trophy on behalf of the school were Robert Yori and Ed Hanna, co-captains. They, in turn, presented it to a very happy Varsity coach, Mr. Cainer Special speaker for the occasion was Mr. Schollenberger, former head coach and now athletic director of the Bull- dogs. Coach recalled the history of the trophy and our effort to obtain it throughout the many years since its establishment. He said, It is always necessary to do better than your best. The things you do now, make this school a better place to live in. Do something worth- while while you are here. All Bulldogs can indeed be proud of the accomplish- ments of the 1967 Varsity Football Team, its coaches, and themselves, if they are a part of THE TEAM, Coach mentioned. Trophy Winner In Action '!...
