We also believe that our Alma Mater is approaching a milestone with us as this year marks the 154th anniversary of the founding of the public school system in Laurel. ln 1801, Laurel Public School was established, and it has grown until today, its students are proud of this historic institution of which we are a part. After much consideration in seeking a suitable theme for this book, we decided that nothing could he more appropriate than to blend the life of Laurel School in the years which have gone by and are now only memories with the life of the school in l955. We hope that as you read our annual, the thoughts which we have presented will link themselves into a vivid picture of Laurel School in the past and the present. Helm We, the class of 1955, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Charles P. Helm with deepest regards for the splendid leadership which he has bestowed upon the Laurel School District during the past 29 years. Every deed that he has performed has been in the best interest of the school and the citizens of Laurel. It is only through his unfaltering guidance in the past three decades that the school has expanded to meet the demands of this new era. Mr. Helm has been most co- operative in advising us about the past to make our yearbook- then and now a success. It is especially fitting that this annual depicting the history of Laurel School be dedicated to the administrator who for almost a generation has been its leader. 4 COLONEL TANNER SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS 1922 to 1925 LAUREL SCHOOL BOARD, 1954-55 DMINISTRATIO Back Row, Left to Right: Dr. Pierce Ellis, Mr. Ford Warrington. Front Row, Left to Right: Mr. Lawrence Allen. Dr. William Prettyman, President, and Mr. Charles Helm, Superintendent. 5 l congratulate the Class of 1955 on the choice of theme for the Milestone lt will perpetuate the tradition and history of your schoolg your example of scholarship to be seen in the graphic arts of this book furnishes a standard of attainment for your successors to emulate. lt will produce that loyalty and pride in your school which is so necessary for the discipline of education you have illustrated and in this way establish a school to which we may be loyal. The art and literary standards to be found in this an- nual offer a challenge for high scholastic attainments. Your class will be graduated into a world of uncertainty and fear, but I am confident your ability will overcome the obstacles of life. When shadows darken your path, your faith will bridge'any valleys of despair you may experience. CH KRLES P. HELNI Slll'FRlNTENDEN'l' To the Class of '55 l extend hearty congratulations for continuing Wfhe Milestone which gives many thought- provoking pleasures of the present and future. A number of the happenings and events of our school life need to be recorded. l trust the Class of ,55 and its advisers receive many satisfactions for their efforts. 6 CHESTER T. DICKERSON PRINCIPAL IN MEMORIAM MILTON D. YERKES Who served on the Laurel School Board from 1949-1954. In memory of Milton D. Yerkes, President of the Laurel School Board of Education, whom almighty God has removed from our midst. He served our school without fear or favor during a period of un- certainty and confusion between a proud past and undetermined future. He exemplified both publicly and privately an abiding faith in the future and con- ducted the public affairs of the school with unsellish devotion. He won the admiration and respect of the citizens of Laurel with his ideals and sacrifices which will make Laurel School a better educational institution of the future. 7 CUSTODIANS Back row, left to right: Samuel Records, chief engineer, Richard Cooper, Charlie Bourgignon. HO OR SOCIETY The Laurel Chapter of the National Honor Society is composed of students from grades 10, 11, and 12, whom the faculty has decided possess the specific qualifica- tions for membership in this Society. These qualifications are: scholarship, leader- ship, character, and service. A student must have a scholastic average of 87lfQQ? or better for a semester. The officers of the Laurel Honor Society for the 1954-1955 term are: Robert Wootten, President, Trenny Marvil, Vice-President, and Jean Brittingham, Secretary. The old members, those who have been retained as members of the Honor Society, hold initiations each semester for the new members. This year the old mem- bers held a mock trial during an assembly program to decide whether or not to ac- cept the new members into the organization. The Sophomores were accepted as pro- bationary members, and, if they meet the qualifications in their Junior year, they will receive their Honor Society pins which the upperclassmen have already received. LAUREL 24-GEORGETOWN 0 The Laurel High Bulldogs opened their season with a big growl, defeating Georgetown. The Bulldogs were strong on both offense and defense. The Golden Knights never penetrated the Bulldogs, 20 yard line. The Laurel attack was led by ,lack Cropper with two touchdowns while Anthony Dulis and ,lon Beckom each hit pay dirt once. The Bulldogs appeared off to another good season with this victory. LAUREL 14-CAMBRIDGE 7 Laurel visited Cambridge for a game which de- veloped into a stubborn battle by both teams before the game was concluded. Doug Hastings put Laurel into an early lead when he went around the right end for 14 yards and a Laurel score. A blocked punt by Pete Phillips on the Cambridge 17 yard line set up the next score. Two plays later, Wayne Lowe plunged over the goal line from one yard out. This game was characterized by strong line play by the Bulldogs. ' ANNAPOLIS 28-LAUREL 12 The Annapolis Panthers proved to be too much for the Bulldogs as they ended Laurel's undefeated string. Although the Laurel boys hit hard and moved the ball for two touchdowns, they were unable to outscore Annapolis. ,lack Cropper scored the Bull- dogs' T.D.'s on short runs after marches of 70 and 55 yards. WICOMICO 33-LAUREL 0 The Bulldogs fell before a superior Wicomico-team lead by Billy Walston, who scored four of the Indians' touchdowns. Although the Laurel team tried to make the game a battle, they couldn't penetrate past their opponent's 30 yard line. The game was characterized by sharp blocking and tackling by both teams, but the Bulldogs couldn't stop the Wi-Hi attack. STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Cary Dingledine, Morris Harris, Jon Beckom, Anthony Dulis, and Richard Phillips. KNEELING: ,lack Ellis, Bruce Waller, Clarke Abbott, .aa .. .u Jia. Continued DOVER 19-LAUREL 6 The Laurel Bulldogs were favored to return to their winning ways at the expense of Dover. How- ever, the Senators surprised and outscored Laurel. The Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead on Wayne Lowe's 15 yard pass to J ack Ellis for the score. But Dover scored 3 touchdowns in the second half to score their first win over Laurel in 3 years. CAESAR RODNEY 14-LAUREL 6 This game was played in a driving rain storm and, therefore, the playing of both teams was under par. Laurel was also handicapped by the loss of Wayne Lowe and Anthony Dulis, both backs, due to injuries obtained during the previous week. Pete Phillips played quarterback for the Bulldogs. Bob Miller scored for the first time and Laurelis only touchdown as the Bulldogs again lacked sufficient scoring power. LAUREL 0-SEAFORD 0 A higher favored and confident Seaford team was held to a scoreless tie by an inspired Bulldog team in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. The underdog Laurel team surprised Seaford by controlling the ball most of the game. The Laurel line, led by Clarke Abbott, All-State Center, was outstanding, crashing through the Seaford defense continuously, and keep- ing Seaford beyond Laurel's 20 yard line. A third- quarter touchdown by Jon Beckom was nullified by a penalty. Although the game actually ended in a scoreless tie, Laurel fans considered it a moral vic- tory, and Laurel ended the season with two wins, four losses, and one tie. FIRST TEAM Bobby Gootee.
