Key to New Tradition 1980 was a year for a new tradition in Student Council. The student body ofhcers were elected in January as juniors, except for the assistant treasurer who had to be a sophomore and will serve until the following January. Students Speak on Tax Revolt The Taxpayer's Revolt - Where Will it Lead was the subject of this year's Laton Lions Club annual speech contest. This speech became a learning experience to each of the contestants. Each student found that, if anything, it would be the schools and students who would get great deal of time and eitort into his speech. Melissa Gonzales and Marilyn Harrell received runner-up plaques. The Oak Leaves staff and mothers cooked and served a great dinner before the contest. 1. Jesse Dudley presenting his award--H speech. 2. Speech Advisor Donald Scheidt gives last minute advice to Melissa Gonzales and Marilyn Harrell. 3. Yearbook staff s potatoes for the evening meal. 4. Speakers relax after presenting their speeches hurt by the tax revolt. This year's winner was Jesse Dudley who received a winner's plaque and went on to compete in the Regionals.
