Seasons that progressed one after another, leading each individual into new forms of growth. As we progressed, our personalities were expanding. The sexes were freer in expression by crossing into each other's domains , There were the everyday classes that enlarged the mind and forced you to partake in new horizons. Sports provided another facet of growth in which relationships with others grew. Humor progressed to new levels. For some, subtle jokes and actions, others preferred the more obvious hilarities. And so we grew through the seasons like the old oaks that are profuse in this area. We added years like layers of bark, showing mental and physical growth, branching ol? into new areas. Though we may not live as long as the sturdy oaks, we have adapted and progressed through all the seasons of life. N Sb bbokgp FQ' O 0' 76.5 5? 1 967 5 'YJ Q' TA 44 XZ I' gf gf' Qs: 3' qof QP. This was to be the only success of the year for the inexperienced Ivlustangs. lVlost of this inexperience was at the crucial perimeter positions. Of thirteen seniors on a twenty-one player squad, four were first year Varsity. With a limited number of players the team did not have the depth needed for a strong team. Despite this the team became very positive early in the season. The scoreboard does not reveal the time and effort spent in preparation for each game. HThey were ten individuals who dedicated themselves to hard practices, long hours of training, and good play, commented Coach Brown. The squad withstood a 3 and 2 preseason to come back with a 9 and 1 East Sierra League standing and the championship. Although the girls lost their playoft position to Garces in the first round, they had the spirit and the gumption to win. The girls were treated to a steak dinner, complements of the Laton Lions Club, for bringing to Laton the 1978-79 E. S. L. volleyball championship. 1. Emily Bertao practices spikes before a game. 2. Pleased with the performances of the team, Coach Kim Brown commented, ltThings got going towards the end of the year, with exceptionally well placed sets and spikes. The J.V.'s had an exceptional defense to back up the offense. One team member made the statement that with the size of the team, they had to work together and make one strong team. With everyone working together they took second. Coach Brown says that she expects to have another great team next season. With a record of 4-6, it would seem that the team did not play well, but Coach Kim Brown said, UThe girls learned a lot and gained some valuable experience. When a team member was questioned about the year, the reply was that they had a great year and an enjoyable season. It was also stated that their losses did not get them down for the next game. 1. Though the J,V.'s and Varsity hnished third and fifth respectively, it was an enjoyable season for all concerned. Coach Richard Petersen was pleased with everyone's improvement throughout the season. A late start in training hampered the Mustangs in the early going but persistence enabled them to come back to a good season. The loss of runners from the previous year and the absence of a girls' team were disappointments of the season. Coach Petersen remains optimistic, though, expecting a strong team next year. Attempts will be made to enter races during the summer to provide runners with valuable experience. This will furnish good preparation for the season to follovv. Coach Petersen plans to diversify next year's schedule matching the Mustangs against teams in distant places. 26 fall Cross Country Runs lli Louie Brasil sets the pace ahead of an Avenal runner. CZ?
