CLHSS HISTURU September 1 1942 was a banner day for fourteen starry eyed youngsters who skrpped mto Mlss Sloan s frrst grade room to begrn a new and glorlous experrence rn the Latham Publtc Schools Lrttle dtd Mrckey Watson, Delbert Frnley Rolla Ryan and Dale Wakefreld reallze on that fateful September mornrng that they would strll be answerrng to the call of the same school bell twelve years later Emrly Hrldrbrand Juamta Craft and Joyce Lee Prrce Jomed us too on that happy occasron but they managed to play hookey from trme to trme attendrng varrous other educatronal rnstrtutrons Along wrth age however they garned wrsdom and rejorned our outstandrng class as the travesty of therr actrons dawned upon them Other members of our talented group that frrst year were Farrrs Creed Esther Marsland Joyce Razey Joan Ryan John Stokes Jrmmre Thurman and Dean Clrne We all survrved our frrst year and went back as second graders a much wrser group of puprls Joyce Razey and John Stokes left us to resume therr studres rn other mstrtutrons but we garned the compamonshrp of Patsy Rams and Elma Swmdell Mrss Troxel was our teacher It was rn the thxrd grade that we frrst acqutred a sense of group responsrbrlrty Mrs Smrth our teacher helped us stage a very successful stamp sellrng campargn for Unrted States War Bonds and thus we drd our b1t to defeat the Axrs Dean Clrne dropped out of school that year but we still had frfteen puprls rncludrng newcomers Shrrley Woodall Ron ald Evans and Kenneth Sharpton Durrng our fourth grade year Mrs Smrth resrgned as our teacher fwe must have been rncorrrgrblej and Mrs Peeb ler was forced to take the helm for the rest of the year Farrls Creed and Elma Swmdell sard farewell to our group and Bonnre Abraham Delrght Edwards Roberta Breever Carol Ann Abraham and Rrchard Reed were welcome addrtrons September 2 1947 marked another mrlestone rn our school careers at Latham On thrs September day we walked rnto Mrs Logsdon s frfth grade room nrneteen strong and full fledged upper classmen Charles Boyer came down from Kerghley to Jorn our class and other addrtrons rncluded Davrd Wrllrams Pat Baker and Elrzabeth Hrnther Drop outs that year rncluded Roberta Greever Rrchard Reed and Joan Ryan Mrs Logsdon agarn gurded our educatronal destlnres durrng the 1947 48 school year Eldon Province Jolned our permanent ranks comrng to Latham from Capron Oklahoma Mary Lewls Pat Adams and Joyce Demo swelled our ranks to twenty at the begrnmng of the term Joyce Lee Prrce played hookey most of the year by sojurnrng rn varrous hosprtals throughout the mrdwest Agam rn the fall of 1948 we mrraculously moved up another notch on the academlc ladder and became proud members of the seventh grade class under the tutelage of Mrs Glbson Pat Baker Dellght Edwards and Elrzabeth Hrnther farled to answer roll call that year but we added one newcomer and a stray to our group Mary Lourse Whrte transferred here from Clay Center and Juamta Craft returned to the flock after a two year absence 1n Mrssourr The Sprrng of 1950 marked the clrmax of our erghr long years rn Latham Drstrrct 42 It was durrng thrs year under the wrse counsel of Mr Harkrader that we all managed tmally to learn the Gettysburg address and Joyce Lee even mastered her multrpltcatron tables Our graduatton roster rncluded the names of frfteen hardy souls and no smgle group ever exhrbrted greater prrde rn recervrng those erghth grade drplomas than d1d the erghth grade class of 50 September 5 1950 was another banner day for frfteen awkward goggle eyed students as classes got underway for the new freshman group rn Latham Hrgh School Fortunately for the class Mr Maygrnnes had the foresrght to assrgn a steady hand to gurde our destrnres and Mrs Anders proved to be about the best frrend and counselor we had through out our hrgh school careers Followrng a publrc freshman rnrtratron we humbly accepted our lowly pos1t1on rn the student body and settled down to awalt our lordly turn rn the years to come Esther Marsland wtthdrew from our group that year but we added Helen Dennett Marleta Wrllrams Howard Selvage and Stanley Smrth 1951 dawned a new era for our proud and arrogant class Gone were those humrlatrng trosh experrences as we stood frfteen strong to assume our respected posrtron rn the student body Followlng the pattern set by our contemporarres we proceeded to expend most of the meanness rn our systems and as a result became model upperclassmen Under the able gurdance of Mrs Anders we engaged rn several profrtable money ventures and opened a savings account at Wrchrta Federal rn antrcrpatron of our semor tr1p Mary Whlte and Emrly Hrldrbrand dropped out of the Latham Schools at the end of therr sophomore year so we counted only thrrteen at September enrollment tlme rn 1952 Agarn at mrd term our ranks were broken w1th the nagrc loss of Howard Selvage and many of us were forced to face realrtres of lrfe for the f1rst ume It was a sober group of Juntors who began rehearsals on our class play Pleased ta Meetcha scheduled for March 26 Proof that we had not lost zest for lrfe came from the frne audience receptron we recreved on the comedy productron Wrth the assrstance of our sponsor our mothers and a number of technlcal advrsors we gave the class of 1953 a royal sendoff wrth our Hawauan theme Junror Senror banquet Typrcal of all semor groups we vrewed our frnal year at LHS wrth some mrxed feellngs Most of the year we lrved for that frnal day of school yetas rt approached we began to seek new tres that would enable some of us to further our educatlon Hrghlrghts of the year were the school carnrval our semor play Mumbo Jumbo productlon of the year book publrshmg the Crusader and plannmg the semor trrp Bolsterrng our regular crew for the frnal tour of duty were newcomer Joan Campbell and old hands Emily Hrldrbrand and Joyce Prrce Agaln Mrs Anders helped us weather our drffrculttes and rt was wrth great prrde that
