This was a very N5 capable and talented class of 23 girls and boys. 'Q - They had such courage and enthusiasm that the upper 3 classmen soon began to look at them with respect 1 a and admiration. While freshmen we were very outstanding in L4 many events. Four of the girls made the first bas- 4 ketball team. Tom Starkey, Eunice Bonnell, and 3 Thelma Wright placed in Algebra in the State 1 Scholarship Contest held at Winfield. A? We began the sophomore year with only 15 of V the original class. Five of the girls made the 3 girls basketball team. Bonnie Huffington placed 3 in history in the State Scholarship Contest. 5 At the beginning of our Junior year our class ' membership was increased when Paul Kluthe joined 5 with us. We presented our first class play HOne 1 Minute Until Twelve,U under the direction of Miss 3 Dyck. In our Junior Senior Banquet we carried out the theme of Ustarlight and Gardens.U We had as - our class sponsor Miss Dyck. We went to Wichita f on our visiting day. '3 Our senior year has been filled with more Y activities but we have enjoyed them all. At the A beginning of the second semester Kiss Dyck, our sponsor left to accept a better position and Mr. 7 Boomer took her place as our sponsor. For our ,, . senior play we presented a three-act comedy, N Uhiss Adventure,H under the direction of Mr. A , Boomer. On our visiting day we took Friday and Saturday and went to Fort Riley, Eanhattan, 1 f Topeka, Lawrence, Kansas City, Missouri, and came N back through Ottawa and Emporia. It was a very A enjoyable and educational trip. We are graduat- ' ing with an enrollment of fourteen. We have only W two of the original group that started together ' in the first grade, Bonnie Huffington and Eunice . Bonnell, and eight that started as freshmen here at Latham High School. ' A . Q fy -s el , X August l5, 1950 . f George L. Cushman Supt. KL Latham, Kansas K Dear Mr. Cushman: cg I have just returned from a two months tour 4 of the United States and thought I would write you a letter telling you of my many wonderful ex- periences. I saw many wonderful sights and met 3, many famous people, While in Washington D. C. I 5 vigilted liresgdent Roosgvelt. He is still hail .K Y an ear y a er his l years as President. Among . JS 1 M other famous people I met and hear about each of W XBEDK A Q the members of the graduating class of 1941. I , , X, to Z thought you might be interested in them so I am E , .I M writing a small item about each one: Q It Junior Phillips, Pres. of the class, instead 1 4 of going ahead and becoming a science and history A teacher, is in Colorado working in a mine and in ' - hisbiparettirknle is counting the petals of daisies, ' mum ing o imself, She loves meg she loves me ' -t ll , g no , ' I found Wilma Calvin in Los Angeles running a beauty College and she is now a stylist for hair fashions in Hollywood. On the day I saw her she A was giving Wesley Ratzlaff treatment to prevent ' . him from loosing his fine head of hair. Wesley now wears his hair in a permanent wave for he is 1, tired of having the girls powdering their faces Q and using 111S hair for a mirror. Wesley is play- V Eng his trumpgt and is leading the country's most Q W amous swing an . i I mot the former Almeta Baldwin who is now C Q living in the Sacramento Valley managing a lemon ' , farm. I also visited with Mrs. Having, the former f Betty Burner, who is living in California. She sg told me that she is playing on the stage and li' fx broadcasting. After asking questions of some , ,Q ' other people I found out that the only broadcasting X- K she does is over her fence. . X4 . s l u Grace Byers, head nurse of Wesley Hospital - V tg in Wichita, is in Texas spending part of her va- X g cation on her ranch that her Aunt Mae av e her .A rmziembwea s, A TJ ,am 'V'WIEEIEEIGiIKEIEEIEElEElEEliE2SEiSEI6ilfElEElEEIET She spends part of her vacation following Rodeos and wild west shows and she has become quite ex- pert in the art of bull-doging wild Texas Steers. She holds the championship of Arkansas with the time of 61 sec. Helen Clarke is now starring in the country's leading play, as Miss Garbo Clarke. Bonnie Huffington is employed by schools of Butler County Kansas. She has finished her'sci- ence course in college and is running experiments to find out how to reduce the swelling of the heads of High School freshmen.. Paul Kluthe, who is depot agent at St. Augustine, Florida, is spending his vacation in Hawaii to get material for his new book UPretty Brown Hawaiian Dancers.H I was unable to see Howard Thompson, but I heard that he is in England working on his new invention, the 2000 Horsepower Mofianical super man. He got his ideas from reading funny books in Physics Class in high school. Tom Starkey is in South Carolina auctioneer- ing off grade A tobacco for the American Tobacco Co. He is making good, too, believe it or not. At last he can talk as fast and as long as he wants to without being asked to dry up. W Myrtle Deweese is queen of the King ranch. Rosella Penner is secretary for the Kansas ' Gas and Electric Ce. in Wichita, but she is now in the New England states spending her vacation. Eunice Bonnell is teaching school in Okla. in one of the Indian Institut 3 that tLt 3 v.r1- ment has for the Indians. If you know of news about any of the former high school students in Latham I will be glad to hear from you. Give my best regards to Mr. Huff- ington. Our track team consisted of Jack Davis and Charles Houk who threw the shot and discus, Hike Thompson was the high jumper, Robert Davis ran the 220, 100 yd. dash and the high hurdles, Dean Calvin took honors in pole vault and was good in low hurdles, Howard Thompson took high places in javelin and Neal Calvin rated close to himg and J.
