They began their high school days during the autumn of 1955 when foundations were being put down for the world's great- est bridge. They completed their high school days in the year of the bridge , the dedication of which will fall shortly after Commen- cement. lt is fitting that this class choose to illustrate some of the pages of their Hiawathan with photographs of the Mackinac Bridge. As BigMack is a vital link in the economic and cultural well-be- ing of our state, and a tremendous potential for a future which even now can scarcely be estimated, so the class of 1958, in the comple- tion of a high school education, has fabricated a bridge to a future whose value cannot now be guessed at. To help friends and classmates remember the year of the bridge the class of 1958 is proud to present this issue of La Salle's Hiawathan. 2 , ug :s:4amf v:srw9'vHnfl5s1mJr1' wsfs.s,,qy,g:g,,?',?w,,, A 4- Q -,,-11516: K ,,,. Dedication The graduating class of 1958 dedicates this issue of the Hiawathan to Mr. Philip J. Richel. Mr. Richel has been a class advisor during our junior and senior years. Through this dedication we hope to show our appreciation and gratitude for the work and help Mr. Richel has so generously given our class. He has shown that an advisor can be a friend as well as a guide and helper. In all class activities he has participated whole-heartedly in making them a success. The Junior Prom saw Mr. Richel as active as any of the class members in helping to decorate and to make the Prom a lasting memory. The Senior Christmas Dance found Mr. Richel stringing boughs, hanging tin- sel, and putting up Christmas trees. He has shown us that an advisor does not sit back and give orders, but becomes a fellow worker. We wish through this tribute to repay our indebtedness to Mr. Richel for being a wonderful teacher, guide, and friend. 1- 4 :fag aV,,1Vww f-vrf' av 'H-s'xQQHr.11. f V'-crtqfffasrf-as-fsff' --'1wv:f.. . I l 8 Board of Education Mr. Wachter, Mr. Ossmann, Dr. McKinnon, Mr.Vairo, Mr. Brown, Mr. Hunter, Mrs. Fair. NOT PICTURED: Mr. Morin, Mrs. Sterk. Seven public-spirited men and women assist Mr. Ossmann and Mr. Wachter in the administration of our school. These devoted citizens spend much time and thought in the problems of our education. They formulate policies, serve to interpret the school to the community, make appointments, and budget income. Of major concern in their present thinking is our need for physical expansion before the large enrollment of grade school children reaches high school age. 1957-58 improvements in which the board has had a large share are continued work on the athletic field, installation of the Youth Center building, and formation of a new athletic league. 9 ludent Council BACK ROW: lack Goudreau, Carol Ferris, Nancy Scofield, Delbert Nickel, Peggy Callihan, john Kelly, Bob Kalbfleisch, Rita Robinson, Roger Wood, Gary Nickel, Tom Simmons, Judson Coveyou, Shirley Ferris. SEATED: Mr. Werner, Nancy Gustafson, Mona Warner, Prudy Tamlyn, Don Ligget, Dave Earl, Deanna Prokop. The Student Council, this year under the advisorship of Mr. Werner, has concerned it- self with problems of the school and student body. Members of the council represent each homeroom. A school-wide election each spring names a Student Council Presi- dent for the ensuing year. Prudy Tamlynhas served in that office in the 1957-58 school year. A major activity of the council was working with adults of the community for acquisition of the building which will become the St. Ignace Youth Center, A dance committee of the council regulates use of the gymnasium for after-game and week-end dances. 0 I0 4 ? sl ei gs eniors ff 3 Jw 4-124' V, fl? DONALD VALLIIER Science Club Rifle Club Basketball Track 21 Masquers MARY DAVIS Class History The graduating class of 1958 has come a long way since they first entered the halls of LaSalle as mere freshmen. The many wonderful times and fun they have had during their high school years will be memories which will be retained always. The class of '58 has always been active, and the classmates have stuck close together in friendship. During the years many stu- dents have been gained and lost to our class. In high school we have secured the friendships which will never be lost, even after future marriages and occupations away from the home town. Looking back through the years we salute our advisors who have helped us with our many class activities. Our advisors have been Mr. Vecellio, Mr. Richel, Miss Quinn, Mrs. Laundy, and Mr. Werner. The numerous activities they have helped us with are the dances we've spon- sored, including our Sadie Hawkins Dance, a Valentine dance, a Get Acquainted dance, our Prom, our Senior Christmas Dance, a Leap Year dance, and a sock hop. In addition we've provided many mixers after games and floats every year for Homecoming. In going through school together the classes which most of us have attended have been our classes in English, general science, social science, math, biology, American history, and gov- ernment. Six of our number were elected to the National Honor Society in the junior year. Others of us may attain that scholastic standing before we graduate. A few of us will be granted col- lege scholarships on the basis of our high school work. A few girls in our class have come through with assorted honors. Girls who have held the position of queens were Rita Robinson, our Homecoming Queen in 1957, Shirley Ferris, who was Homecoming Queen in 1956, and Prudy Tamlyn who was our Prom Queen. Girls in our class who attended Girls' State were Connie Law and Sharon Grondin. In cheerleading only Sally Hagen and Shirley Ferris have participated. The boys in our class have given outstanding performance in the athletic department. These boys are Steve Alward, David Earl, John MacDonald, Willard Lambert, Calvin McPhee, Paul Donnelly, Gary Gustafson, .Terry Hoover, Mike Dory, John Gold, John Frazier, Kenneth Smith, .Tack Luepnitz, and Tom Spieles. Boys from our class who attended Boys' State were David Earl, Ernie Glashaw, Roger Wood, Fred Lee, and Paul Donnelly. Class officers throughout our years have been Don Ligget, Ernie Glashaw, Fred Lee, David Earl, Roger Wood, Prudy Tamlyn, Sally Hagen, Sharon Grondin, Marilyn Movalson, Con- nie Law, Delbert Nelson, and Karen Olmstead. 22 lliff F155 ,-1,-.qtqf Xx'.'Xxqf'-3'v.1fPS1-'L-',g f g-13-' -g',1'L.'r:F' fgg',' .7 A 5 -ff ',,' f7.i'7.- QM'Lgjf',5T' HQ- -11 .Q.'Cgbf,fQ'. ?-'3-- 1' . The Saints' football team compiled one of the best records in the school's history, with a season's record of five wins and one loss. The lone reversal came at the hands of the highly-rated Escanaba Holy Name Crusaders. One game was canceled, by Rogers City, because of the flu. This creditable season was a reversal of pre-season predictions that 1957 would do little more than see us building for the future. With the loss through graduation of star players Kalbfieisch, Al- kire, McLeod, Nelson, Hill, and Prout, the Saints fielded a relatively green team with only two regulars returning. The Saints had to overcome a host of injuries which plagued them during the first part of the sea- son. The main casualty was the loss of Stanley Ferris who was being groomed for the number one quar- terback position. Stan suffered a fractured collarbone while the team was scrimmaging the Sault High Blue Devils shortly before the opening of the season. John Chum Frazier, a senior, was given the quarterback job which he handled with finesse. The all-senior backfield was John Gold who provided the power required of a fullback, John MacDonald, Jim Perry, and Larry Paquin who added drive, and half- backs Ken Smith and Steve Alward who sparked the team with their excellent running. The beefy line was anchored by ends Dave Earl and Gary Gustafson, tackles Paul Donnelly and Mike Doud, guards Jerry Hoover and Bob Kalbfleisch, and center Ray Popp. The defensive line, which held up brilliantly, consisted of Willard Lambert and John Smith as flankers, Donnelly Doud, and Cal- vin McPhee at tackles, and Kalbfleisch and Roger Beers at middle guards. Other Saints seeing action were Mike Dory, Dave Pemble, and Nelson LaVake. One of the reasons for the fine showing of the Saints was a professional type of offense introduced by Coach Bud Vecellio. Leading scorer for the year was Ken Smith with thirty points. Dave Earl, who did defensive signal calling, led in pass receptions and constantly thwarted opponents' passing attack, Two players gained special recognition. They were co-captains Earl and Alward who rated berths on the All-U.P. Honorable Mention list. 48 ,L,. ,M A,,, -K-, 42 John Frazier Gary Gustafson ww' ..,, A , M ' 1,2-Q-M--'rf lv1nlUi ,g Kenneth Smith 49 John Smith Yin John MacDonald David Earl John Gold 50 Jerry Hoover Q f ,,, f Y . gf 5 , , gf ',,L I- - .,,, YQM ,gg I DQ! 1 -W e 1 Q i ,.,q, , ,,,V, f, .ilbv A , M, , e Q A if C 'w ,, e ,uf ' e I A ,. , , A ' f ' A-,- . They were Tom Johnson, Ron Frazier, Kenneth Smith, Seldon Kalbfleisch, Stanley Ferris, Leon- ard Nelson, J im McLeod, Bob Law, and George Hill. Approximately twenty-five boys reported at the beginning of the season. From this group Coach Bernie Olson selected the starting lineup.
