E CLISH The English Department was very concerned with the education of the students at Lansdowne. Two new teachers, Mrs. Kolodny and Miss Banks, joined the faculty this year. Grammar was a large part of each English class this year. It was felt that the new grammar now being taught in the lower grades should be continued through high school. The Valhalla and Rurik were both sponsored by the En- glish Department since yearbook and journalism were offered as English electives. The Drama Department entertains the students every year. This year, A Thousand Clowns was presented in the fall. The drama students not only performed at Lansdowne, but also traveled to six elementary schools and presented children's stories. Professional actors were at Lansdowne this year when the Baltimore Theatre Ensemble presented a mime show to the students and faculty. Mrs. Wehrenberg, the Department head, and the remain- der of the English Department are most concerned with the strengthening of humanity through the study of English. D. Banks C. Cohen The word for the Social Studies Department this year was exciting. A new program was developed and the teachers made this year a really good one. They were not content to just let normal activities occur, but were planning all year to make their classes more interesting. For instance, a new program, entitled Family Living, was a project for the Senior Class. This program had never been attempted before as a grade level project, but turned out successfully. The presentations included :films and speakers. The speakers were selected from current ersonalities and leaders of the community who discusse many subjects of interest. In addition to that, Mr. Fort and Mr. Poscover devel- oped a team teaching class in which they combined the Social Studies and Science Departments. This program was called S.E.S. - Society Environmental Science. It dealt with the sociological implications of the biological problems of the environment and proved to be a great success. The Social Studies Department also welcomed two new teachers to the stall this year. Mrs. Pat Seitz taught ninth grade and Mr. Mark Caniield C.I.S.S. and Modern Contemporary History.
