The English Depart- ment has made this possible. Since the general level of reading ability has been noticeably lower, work in remedial reading has been introduced. Good reading habits are as important an achievement for school success as clever passing on the gridiron. Good reading habits must be established before we can appreciate the literature courses offered to upper classmen. Most inlportant are they. if we are to appreciate good argu- ment in debating. the radio. movie. or newspaper. We are glad to hear familiar voices over W'CBS as the Lanphier Dra- matic Club presents its plays each week. but we can appreciate clever lines if we have learned to Hreadf' Miss Helen Bell is new in the English 1 How do you expect the uudience to believe it if you r1on't yourself? Last year Miss Helen Teele and Miss Grace Cox were Hnew comersf' Both of them have their 1naster's degree from the University of Illinois. Miss Teele has had a great range in training, for after Illinois she has studied in the American tis Helen Tcele Classical School in Athens, Greeceg Har- vard Universityg NOFIIIWCSICTHQ and Ann Arhor. Miss Coxis work has been in Clini- cal Psychology,-while Miss Emily La- mey's master's work was done in Teacher's College Education. These are well distributed among the various departments of the enjoy, or if you are materially minded, you may apply your art knowledge to the designing of useful objects. Some of our projects for the past year have been portraits of our classmates, color studies of flowers from our own Lanphier beds, posters and signs for school purposes. Our craft work has in- cluded incised plaster and tooled metal plaques, and painted and carved wooden bowls. Our school decoration, made for all to enjoy, took the form of imitation stained glass windows which shed the true spirit of the Christmas holiday season. Student attitude has been, for the most part, quite good. More and more of our students are beginning to understand that the library can furnish valuable aid in preparing their work and do appreciate this service. Let's make the library the center of the true Lanphier spirit. V. Jean Thomas LATIN DEPARTMENT Ethel Furlich In the Latin classes gathers the con- clave of potential Caesars and Ciceros and the equally important Cornelias who are to startle the world some day with their brilliance and training. As they learn the reasons for the strength and weakness of Roman civiliza- tion and government which is the great ancestor of ours, we hope they will be equipped to meet the problems of the future. In reading of great men we learn how to be great. The Horatius of the future is in training-watch for him! No lzteral tranelatmm please I atm Fifteen COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT Don T. Anderson Rohn-rt M. Cain Nell .-X. Plain .Xriel Svsordes Commercial training in high school has two real functions. The first function is to aid the individ- ual to meet prohlems encountered daily in his effort to live wisely. economically. and efiiciently. Commercial training gives an elementary understanding of the legal importance of ordinary husiness papers. The student needs to learn to give thought to the value of character, reputation, and personality in cooperative living. and to his own responsibility to others. He must have the ability to keep accurate record of personal helongings. including assets and liahilities. and to type personal cor- respondence and husiness papers. The second function of liusiness train- ing. in advanced classes. is to develop skills sufficiently accurate and speedy to he of commercial value to the possessor. if he must liegin work when he finishes high school. Commercial training is serv- ing its purpose when it aids in the attain- ment of the ultimate goal. To aid the student to earn while continuing his edu- cation is another reason for acquiring skill in husiness sulnjccts. Such training is not the goal itself hut the means to a goal. lf e will mm' lfllfe l1il'fl1li0lI.', f Sliorlhruul. Fix! MUSIC DEPARTMENT In our local school system. every high school pupil is required to take two years of music before it is possible for him to be graduated. He may choose the gen- eral music classes, or if qualified, the more advanced work with the band, or- chestra, or choir. The general music classes are planned to give the student a background of under- standing and an appreciation for the music which he will hear during the rest of his life time, through modern radio and movies, which are turning more and more to the better types of music, mu- sicales, concerts, and various other forms of musical entertainment. This back- ground includes a study of and practice in singing both part and unison songs, a general survey of music history and fun- damental music theory, as well as an acquaintanceship with the names and careers of the great musicians of our present day. Although the general music classes meet only twice and three times every Edwin Such Vera E. Whitlock other week, they present some very in- teresting material on the lives of the mas- ters and their great works. Miss Vera E. Wfhitlock is the Vocal Director of Lanphier High School, and Mr. Edwin E. Sach, the Instrumental Director. Sing this phrase softly. -----Mzlsic. FFXFIIIPPII MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Freeman C. Goodwin Blauiche Raman Little did we think when we entered Converse that some day, four long years ahead, we could proudly say we had com- pleted four years of mathematics, because at that time we had only two years offered. Since then many changes have taken place. When we returned as sophomores Miss Thomas. our former algebra teacher, had become librarian, and Miss Raman was teaching mathematics. assisted by Miss Albrecht. who taught one class of algebra. Later. as the department grew, Mr. Goodwin was transferred from the science department to teach algebra, and Miss Albrecht returned to social science. With these teachers we have studied algebra, plane geometry, advanced alge- bra, solid geometry, college algebra, and trigonometry. Besides successfully com- pleting our courses we have won first prize at the State Fair the last two years, and have organized a club. We leave this department realizing that mathematics is practical, as it is the basis for many vocations. It renders immeas- urable service in the countless ordinary affairs of the workaday world and in the development of science. It is cultural in that it reveals to us the beauty of geomet- rical forms in nature and in man's works of art. We hope that we have developed a more scientific viewpoint. that we will listen and hear all facts. that we will chal- lenge authority before accepting state- ments and before drawing any conclu- sions. 1- Are there any queslions? -Advanced Mathematics. Eighteen SCIENCE DEP The present generation has witnessed some notable achievements in scientific theory. Discoveries have been made which already exert a profound influence on the thinking of educated men. To meet this modern trend the Science Department of Lanphier High School offers courses in general science. biology, chemistry and physics. in which there are more than six hundred fifty students en- rolled and for which credit is given toward college entrance. The laboratory period is an important part of thc instruc- tion, in which the student takes part in demonstrations or individual experi- ments. The latest addition to our methods of instruction is the Visual Aid Program in wl1icl1 ninety-two reels of educational movie films were shown in the depart- ment during the year. The aims of these courses are: flj to give the students information concerning scientific facts and principlesg 125 to give training in methods of gaining informa- AR jf W e R. l.. llolrlcnz X Joe H. lloffmnu Hugo Lindquist Frank E. Twenty-one PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT 1 Carolyn Mountjoy Ioll.l 'ke The aim of our Physical Education program is to promote physical activities, and which will have a good carry-over value. The chief phases are Physical Edu- cation classes, intramural sports, and in- terscholastic sports. One period a week is devoted to personal and social hygiene. The activities taken up during the year include football, speedball, basketball, volley ball, tumbling, deck tennis, track, tennis, and softball. The girls have a period of time in the fall and in the spring which is devoted to rhythmic week. In the intramural program we have provided games for those students who want to play and are on no school team. Tournaments are held in basketball and softball. The girls, through sponsorship by the Girls' Athletic Association. par- ticipate in intramural volley ball, basket- ball, softball, and golf. The third phase of the Physical Educa- tion Department is the interscholastic program. Get that ball. '- Gym. Twenty-two SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT A changing world has had its effect on the subject matter in the Social Sciences so that the social and economic problems of our nation are stressed with the aim of making the potential citizen conscious of his future responsibilities. If our demo- cratic form of government is to endure. the individual citizen must know more intimately the problems of govermnent. how they have arisen. and how similar problems have been met. either wisely or unwisely in the past. Social studies is one of the most certain methods of bringing this about. ln common with the best schools of the country Lanphier requires two units of social studies. and three or more may be earned. Vlforld History is the course given in the sophomore year. which treats of the life and accomplishments of man from early times to the present.
