Supply Department A ship is a self-sufficient, mobile, floating city, and supply department of Lang con- tributes to this self-sufficiency by providing support services to the crew. Under normal steaming conditions supply department goes about its daily duties of supporting the other four departments by providing repair parts, food, money, laundry services, retail items through the ships store, and the best haircuts in the Pacific Fleet. During battle conditions, supply department personnel augment the other four departments in manning their battle stations. Being self-sufficient, the ship must be able to provide itself a myriad of maintenance and repair work, which requires acquisition, stowage, and management of a wide variety of thousands of repair parts, equipage, and con- sumable items. The storekeepers of S-1 Divi- sion order, receive, stow, and issue these items according to the needs of the ship, while at the same time maintain records of receipt, inven- tory, and expenditure as a direct input to the N avyis supply system of financial and material management. S-2 and S-5 Divisions. have the never- ending task of providing nutritious and pleas- ing meals for the crew and officers three and a LT. J. O. HOLCOMBE half times a day, three hundred sixty five days a year. Often during the deployment to the Western Pacific they prepared steak and ham- burger cookouts which were a pleasant addi- tion to the daily routine. In the various ports of call that we visited, our Mess Management Specialists prepared and managed several for- mal dinners for invited guests of the ship. Of special note was the quality of the nautical lunch served to all the Pollywogs prior to their initiation as Shellbacks when the ship crossed the equator. It was indeed unique and befitting the occasion. The Ship's Servicemen of S-3 Division operate such services aboard the ship as the laundry, the barber shop, and the ship's store. Also during the deployment, the Ship's Ser- vicemen managed the special order service, processing and selling over thirty thousand dollars in foreign merchandise items from the Navy Exchange System in Yokosuka, Japan. S-4 Division is the Money Division as well as the smallest division on the ship. The Disbursing Clerk maintains pay records, com- putes tax and allowances and processes travel claims, allotments and the financial reports required by the Navy pay system.
