On a cruise in which you served your country as an ambassador of the United States, as its capability to keep the international seas open for free use, and as a strong defense to pre- vent wars. All of the above you have done with ex- cellence and professionalism. It has not been easy or without sacrifice. You have given many hours of your free time, been away from your loved ones and endured the rigors of the seas. You bring home a ship better maintained and more capable, a tribute to your personal perseverance, pride and character. I salute you and thank you for these efforts. During the cruise you have no doubt made many friendships and learned a great deal more about your shipmates. Within, this book contains their pictures so that in years to come you can thumb through it and see how you and your shipmates looked in 1975. Smooth Sailing in the Future, R. L. WYATT if 4,51 Sf, Wfwtfi lCi'7-5 1 USS Lang - A Proud Heritage The USS LANG KDE-10605, the second ship of the American fleet to be named after Seaman John Lang, who in a naval engage- ment between the USS WASP and HMS FROLIC during the war of 1812, could no longer restrain his eagerness to settle an old score, leaped across to the bowsprit of the FROLIC and headed for her deck. His daring action so st-irred the crew of the WASP, that Lang was immediately followed by the fighting men of the WASP in clearing the decks of the FROLIC. Over a hundred years later, Seaman Lang was to have the first of two ships to be named after him. The first LANG CDD-3995 was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Kearny, New Jersey. Her keel was laid 5 April 1937, and she was launched 27 August 1938. LANG CDD-3993 had a length overall of 341 ft. 1 in., extreme beam, 35 ft. 6 in., stan- dard displacement of 1,850 tons, mean draft of 10 ft., 9 in., a designed speed of 38.5 knots, and a designed complement of 9 officers and 175 men. She was originally armed with four 5-inch .38 guns, four .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine guns, and sixteen 21-inch torpedo tubes. The first Lang was commissioned in 1939, and served extensively in the Pacific and Mediterranean theaters of World War Two. For her actions she was awarded a total of eleven battle stars. USS Lang Today u - , ' ' ' ,M The USS LANG CDE-10601 is the sixth ship to be built of the KNOX CDE-10521 class of ocean going escorts. She was built at the Los Angeles division of Todd Shipyard Corpora- tion. The keel was laid on March 25th, 1967 and on March 28th, 1970 Lang was com- missioned as a United States Ship. LANG CDE-10607 is a integral unit of today's modern navy, capable of performing in a multi-threat environment. Though her primary function is Anti-Submarine Warfare, LANG is well equipped to handle the tasks of Anti-Air Warfare, Shore Bombardment, Aerial Search, Patrol and Command functions. The various systems that make up the ship are the most modern available, from the Engineering plant to electronic systems to weaponry and microfilm efficiency of the supply system. . LANG, with a 4100 ton displacement and a length of 438 ft., she can be driven through the water with speeds in excess of 27 knots. She hosts long range radar and sonar, conventional and rocket launched torpedoes, a 5 inch .54 caliber gun, self defense surface to air missile system, and carries her own light airborne mul- tipurpose system QLAMPSJ helicopter. All this is complemented by a crew of 230 and 21 of- ficers. Living accommodations include a TV lounge, sick bay, laundry, ships store, library, and efficient galley and comfortable berthing' spaces all centrally air-conditioned. LANG is a unit of Destroyer Squadron 17, homeported in San Diego, California.. Since commissioning, LANG has been deployed on 3 overseas cruises and has received for her ac- tions, the Viet-Nam service award fwith two starsj Armed Forces Expeditionary Award, the Viet-Nam Campaign Award Cwith devicej, and the award for combat action. W EVENS Operations Department The function of the Operations Depart- ment is to provide the ship with navigational, tactical, and communications data and to process this data into useful information. This information is then used to make the necessary tactical decisions required during the ship's operations. Shipboard communications reception and transmission, both electrically and visually, is the responsibility of OC division. Radiomen process the daily flow of incoming messages and send out communications originated by the ship. They also perform operator maintenance on the equipment and the associated antenna systems. Signalmen possess the training to send and receive message and tactical information by flashing light, flag hoist, and the mysterious language of semaphore. Incorporated into this division is the ship's post office, which handles the ship's official and personal mail. OI division's Operations Specialists staff the ship's Combat Information Center and utilize sophisticated radar techniques to plot surface and air contact positions, keeping the Bridge informed of the ship's relative position to its surroundings. They also assist in the co- ordination of target information for surface and underwater attack situations. OE Division is composed of Electronic LT. B. M. Miller Technicians who repair, test, calibrate and evaluate the ship's Radar and Com- munications systems, as well as the associated test equipment. The ET's are also responsible for departmental training in the fields of operating procedure, maintenance techniques, and electrical and electronic safety. Electronic Warfare Technicians are also part of this divi- sion. They function very much the same as ET's, but specialize in the operation and repair of the Electronic Countermeasures Systems, both in the detection and transmission of these signals. The duties of navigation and administra- tion are overseen by ON division. Quarter- masters assist the ship's navigator in the various aspects of navigation on the high seas. They perform this using charts and electronic navigation aids, however, the Star-Fix method is still used. Yeomen and Per- sonnelmen work in the ship's offices, main- taining personnel records, official documents, publications, and performing the myriad of clerical duties of an independently operating organization within the vast Defense Depart- ment. The ship's Career Counselor provides personnel with information and assistance in career planning. The two Hospital Corpsmen are also part of ON division. OI Division OSC J. L. OSI M. R. These are the people that make LANG a self- sustaining and mobile unit. Throughout this WESTPAC deployment, long and hard hours enabled LANG to meet her commitments, as well as those of other ships that couldn't steam for one reason or another. The engineers who made this possible form the four divisions within the department. Down in the fireroom works B division. Here fuel oil and air are mixed in just the right amounts to produce the steam of 1275 pounds pressure and 9500 F. that moves, lights and heats the ship. When not steaming the plant, the BTS were deeply involved in the extensive maintenance required by the boilers and their complicated Automatic Combustion Control and supporting systems. Also part of B division in the Oil King . Here Fuel Oil inventory and transfer functions arerperformed. M division is divided between the engineroom and auxiliary machinery room number one. This is where the steam is put to work. The turbine engine converts the steam energy to 35,000 shaft horsepower for the ship's single screw. Two distilling plants provide fresh water for the ship at a rate of 500 LT. E. F. MANN gallonsfhour each. In Aux I, three turbine generators provide enough electricity to light a small city. The Machinists Mates stand machinery watches underway and perform preventive and corrective maintenance sup- port on these equipments regularly. R division is a real mixing pot' of rates and talents necessary to maintain a ship. The Hull Technicians are the core of the damage control organization. They also provide welding and metal work throughout the ship. The Machinists Mates of A gang provide support of the air conditioning and refrigeration systems and various auxiliaries. The diesel generator belongs to the Enginemen who also maintain the engine that propels the fastest gig in Westpac. The Machinery Repairmen pro- vide the talents to machine precision hand- made parts for complicated repairs at sea. E division's Electrician's Mates control the distribution of electrical power, and provide a repair capability extending from changing light bulbs to working on huge elec- tric motors. The Interior Communication Elec- tricians are responsible for the complex voice and signaling communications systems on board. The talents of the engineers are many, but their pride is singular. When a destroyer was needed somewhere, the LANG was always ready to steam with confidence. B Division Fire Room And Test Lab ENS S. C. JASPER BTCM R E BTC D DAVIS GERALD S 4 I 4 VM lx ' BT1 R. K. Under normal steaming conditions supply department goes about its daily duties of supporting the other four departments by providing repair parts, food, money, laundry services, retail items through the ships store, and the best haircuts in the Pacific Fleet. During battle conditions, supply department personnel augment the other four departments in manning their battle stations. Being self-sufficient, the ship must be able to provide itself a myriad of maintenance and repair work, which requires acquisition, stowage, and management of a wide variety of thousands of repair parts, equipage, and con- sumable items. The storekeepers of S-1 Divi- sion order, receive, stow, and issue these items according to the needs of the ship, while at the same time maintain records of receipt, inven- tory, and expenditure as a direct input to the N avyis supply system of financial and material management. S-2 and S-5 Divisions. have the never- ending task of providing nutritious and pleas- ing meals for the crew and officers three and a LT. J. O. HOLCOMBE half times a day, three hundred sixty five days a year. Often during the deployment to the Western Pacific they prepared steak and ham- burger cookouts which were a pleasant addi- tion to the daily routine. In the various ports of call that we visited, our Mess Management Specialists prepared and managed several for- mal dinners for invited guests of the ship. Of special note was the quality of the nautical lunch served to all the Pollywogs prior to their initiation as Shellbacks when the ship crossed the equator. It was indeed unique and befitting the occasion. The Ship's Servicemen of S-3 Division operate such services aboard the ship as the laundry, the barber shop, and the ship's store. Also during the deployment, the Ship's Ser- vicemen managed the special order service, processing and selling over thirty thousand dollars in foreign merchandise items from the Navy Exchange System in Yokosuka, Japan. S-4 Division is the Money Division as well as the smallest division on the ship. The Disbursing Clerk maintains pay records, com- putes tax and allowances and processes travel claims, allotments and the financial reports required by the Navy pay system. SK2 A R. L. The SH-2F is equipped with a removable sonobuoy launcher, Magnetic Anamoly Detector, Surface Radar, and has the capability to link data information from the sonobuoy back to the surface ships. While deployed aboard LANG, DET-3 flew over 535 flights hours including one-120 'hour month. In addition to its ASW mission, the aircraft proved its Multi-Purpose title by providing Medical Evacuation CMEDEVACJ services from other units at sea on numerous occasions. In one case, the ship that had the need for this service was too far out to sea for a direct trip to the shore facility. Here, LANG was positioned to refuel the helo approximately half-way. In another, the call came in at 3 o'clock in the morning. The plane was but- toned up, however, Within 30 minutes it was airborne. This represents the absolute minimum amount of time that is necessary to prepare the helo for flight. More timely mail pick-up and delivery is another handy job performed. The Airda1es of DET-3 extend our sincere thanks to the officers and men of LANG for their cooperation and assistance during the many Flight Quarters evolutions. N. W 2 . . Although many people contributed some time to this effort, both photographic and clerical, some inconvenienced themselves considerably to make this a success and, hopefully, in- teresting record of the latest deployment. They include: GMG2 Steve Melia, who for various reasons had the bulk of the lay-out and design of the entire cruise book, ETR3 Bill LeCompte spent many hours in LANG'S photographic darkroom , While contributing many of the actual photographs in the meantime, ETR2 Ken Anderson coordinated and arranged the photographic layout, .EMFN Dan Casaday got himself involved with the final lay-out and typ- ing prior to pu-blication.
