Squeaking pulleys and clattering levers fill the air with the sound of Lane's juniors working in PHYSICS lab. Four periods each week are devoted to intricate experiments which visibly demonstrate the principles of physics. When not in one of the five well- equipped laboratories delving into the world of the physicist, the student spends three more periods a week listening to the informative DEMCNSTRATING a law in physics, Mr. Hawver sets up an experiment for his class. l PHYSICS Standing: Mr. Emil Anderson, Mr. Paul Hawver, Mr. Henson Clark, Seated: Mr. Samuel Paine Mr. Herschel Scott. Juniors Investigate Matter and Ene rgy lectures of his experienced instructor. During these periods, the student, under the able guidance of his teacher, analyzes the results of the delicate experiments and solves dit- ticult problems in theory, thus strengthening his foundations in the physical sciences. The students, who are specially chosen for their technical ability, work as a group on projects whicih explore the upper reaches of the earth's atmosphere. The most recent projects of the society have been the launchings of instrument packages attach- ed to balloons to gather information on cosmic ray strength, temperature, and the pressure of the atmosphere at various altitudes. Arnold Hetlin W 4 s 1 Junior Scientists Organize Clubs With enthusiasm unabaied by two qualified successes, members of the LANE AMATEUR ROCKET SOCIETY are currently working on their third and fourth rockets. These latest ettorts of the society are destined to be fired at the Fort Bliss, Texas, army base where LARS made its previous attempts. The third rocket will be a more powerful version of the XLR-2 and will carry a beacon trans-mitter tor radar tracking purposes, while the XLR-4 will be a much larger rocket with an instru- ment payload and a nosecone release-recovery meahanism. r AMATEUR ROCKET SOCITETY Standing: Matthas, Maranlz, Pytlik, Nalwaka, Pat- ten. Joseph Eckl Reaching out into the vast darkness of science and technology, memibers of the JETS CLUB are ever in the search of knowledge. Though they meet only once a week, they are in actuality at work every day of the semester creating new problems to be solved and new exhibits of science and engineering. The know- ledge gained from tours, movies, and lectures provides Lane's future engineers with a real understanding of what they will have to accomplish in their future years.
