GRAHAM Registered Guernseys Phone 960-3 Bluffton SHAFER TRACTOR SALES Bluffton, Indiana Phone 433 GLASS PIIIIPIIEIJY It was a warm summer day in July I967. I, Marcia Shewalter, society columnist for the New York Times, had just arrived at the sight of our class reunion of the '57 graduates. Janice Johnson, who had met me in New York, after arriving from Paris where she had been modeling for Christian Dior, had come with me. We were greeted by the boisterous voice of Jim Decker, coach of the Zollner Pistons and Earl VanEmon, millionaire owner of the stone quarry where our reunion was being held. They informed us that all of our fellow graduates were planning to come with the exception of Jim Julian, who was stranded on Mars due to the shortage of Atomic fuel for his hot rod rocket, and Carol Strahm, who was living in Germany with her husband who had been sta- tioned there since I957. A sudden roaring informed me that Sen. James Diehl was making a political speech for the coming presidential election. He was touring the U. S. with his personal secretary, Sylvia Aker and her husband . Upon hearing a groan, I turned to see Ruth Green, registered nurse from the Mayo clinic, working over a protesting patient. I was surprised to see that Jim Markley after ten years of sports car racing without an accident had finally had his first accident when the brakes of his new Mercedes Benz failed, and he had run head on into a truck. As I walked over to the accident, Jim Heckman emerged from the wrecked truck. He was bringing the drinks, which had been furnished by Roy Schoeff, owner ofthe Commercial Dairy in Ft. Wayne, to the reunion . Diane Stern, home economist of General Mills, was turning the air blue with her wail of despair, now that the refreshments had been destroyed. Herman Schroeder, owner ofa great string of filling stations throughout the country, was trying to comfort her. Dorothy Meyer, wife of a wealthy Florida yacht club owner, was quite busy with her four young daughters. As I walked over to help her, Charles Thompson and Peg Drabenstot iMr. 8. Mrs.J, owners of a I000 acre farm, arrived to her aid and offered to take the children for a ride in their new Lincoln convertible. I noticed a large group gathered around a tall, athletic looking man. This turned out to be none other than Rex Decker, star pitcher for the New York Yankees, known to his ever loving fans as Breezy. You can imagine my surprise when I noticed Lois Reed, Literature Professor at l.U., seemingly taking much interest in a Yankee, although a Cleveland fan at heart. 87 VT -' ' T' TT Jim Masterson, a famous TV engineer, was televising our reunion which was being watched by all NBC viewers of the U.S. and Canada. He picked up several ofthe happenings of the day such as the time when Earl VanEmon fell off the stone pile and was unconsious until Rex GIeim's metropolitan opera solo, which he was practicing revived him. Ellen Yager, his personal secretary, was turning the pages of his musical score frantically to keep up with him. Another interesting person that Jim happened to pick up on his camera was Janet Wasson, a graduate of Manchester with a Ph. D., which she had received after several years of study. She is now a Latin Professor at Burris high school in Muncie, Indiana. The broadcast was sponsored by the H.S. Gerber packing company which had merged with the Parrot Packing Company. I was next greeted by Martha Mitchell after she had iust arrived out of breath. She explained that her private plane had landed on her sister's farm, who had married a wealthy country gentleman. From there, Mary had picked her up and brought her with the family. A sudden chorus of oohs and aahs from the unmarried females present informed me that Charles Booker and Harold Meyer the only eligible bachelors Ieft had at last arrived in their Continental convertible. They told everyone that they had just finished their proiect over Lake Michigan, and were now working on a bridge that would span the Pacific Ocean. They always work together. Looking around I spied another of my classmates in one of the groups. This happened to be Carlene Blackmore who after finishing her studies at the theatrical academy in Hollywood, has now taken over Ann Sothern's starring role in the television production of Private Sec- retary. She was in the process at the moment of modeling for Ida Borne, world famous portrait painter, who had painted portraits of many famous figures in the world today. Close to the end of the day I heard the most wonderful voice which was none other than Gene Faus, the greatest singing rage since Elvis P. . He was serenading Mrs. Gaiser and Mrs. Light with his new recording of You Ain't Got Enough. This seemed to end a perfect day and after Gene had finished his song there was a gathering of the class to say their good-bys. We decided to meet in T977 at the Waldorf Astoria with Ellen Yager and Rex Gleim acting as hostess and host.
