The long shadows stretch ahead. Laughing students climb-some for the first time- the steps of L.H.S. joyfully for the first classes. Spirited yells are spilled at each colorful football game. Stiff, cold fingers gather wood for the traditional Home- coming bonfire. Then, like a small gust of wind, autumn continues its journey into nowhere. Wiuler . . . Coldness grips the air now . . . studying continues. Boys clad in gold and black dribble the round ballg students scream fran- tically for just one last goal that will give victory to the Tornadoes. Christmas excitement creeps in and then leaps out. Bitter cold is a reminder of the beauty of winterg the gusty wind is a reminder that winter is over. Spring . . . A turbulent wind, a sprint of dust . . . signs like epi- taphs in gawdy, carnival colors litter the halls. "Vote for John" . . . brilliant strategy to make or mar the campus wheel . . . excite- ment as the '58 Tornado arrives . . . frantic cramming of dead minds in the final week . . . a gasp. a cheer, as the last exam slams on the desk . . . bewilderment as grad- uation nears. Then the long shad- ows stretch behind us. A mosaic of shadow-shapes. And it's gone. Remember? This was '58. AUT x fx . Kylix. From the day one enrolls as a painted, confused freshman to the time he graduates, smiling and con- fident, these men and women are working behind the scenes to enrich his high school career. While they are guiding him in the ways of learn- ing, they endeavor to impart the high principles and ideals on which to build a successful life. Facts are easily forgotten, but the values in- stilled become a part of him. Q 'TH-:Y !l -7 'i 16? in-.. V 450, 4 . SL'PIYRINTFNDIiN'I' OI: SCHOOLS Mr. CQ. XY. Peppy, alert cheerleaders certainly do lead the way to many good times at L.ll.S. Their songs and yells build up Tornado spirit at football and basketball games, and their stunts entertain students at pep rallies. Tornado cheerleaders lead the way in plastering school walls with posters. AL Ifath spring frightened eandidates for Cheerleader display their ability before the L.H.S. student body. The students then thoose the five that they think are best suited for the job. The 1957-58 cheerleaders were Klata Xwoodul. Bobbie XVright. Nanny Ray. Charlene Short. and Tahita Niemeyer. The quintet planned and presented some ot' the best pep rallies in L.H.S. history. Snappy uniforms. traditional booster tags. and sharp new yells eomhined to keep school spirit booming. Klata XY'ood'ul. head cheerleader. was another reason sthool spirit was at a peak during the 'S'-'38 school year. This year we have chosen Miss Bennie Speck, Tornado sponsor. Miss Speck has devoted many hours of time and work to help make our annual one of the best. A sincere thanks also goes to the student bus drivers. These students carry school children to and from school safely. The cafeteria staff provides hot meals each day for students who desire to dine on the campus. These women under the direction of Mrs. Gerald Boykin plan and prepare the food. The office girls. who aid in car- rying out routine business, are an invaluable group of workers. Thank you, each and all who work to make our school one of the best. CRGANIZATIONS XY'hether in autumn. winter, or spring, the activities sponsored by various or- ganizations are one of the primary com- ponents of our school life. From the freshman in autumn, who wants to join everything, to the senior in the spring, who has learned that it is best to limit one-'s activities slightly, clubs and organ- izations play a major role in the career of each student. Before the Christmas holidays began, the Student Council sponsored a door- decoration contest. Students of e a c h homeroom designed and arranged their decorations. Room 203's decoration, shown at the left, was declared the win- ner. Such activities add zest to our daily curriculum. 8I , .11 1 p' J,-P 1 " as' HUGH -O As co editors of the annual staff, Connie and jay began planning in the summer. They have worked, worried, and worked some more to help make our book what it is. ANNUAL THE 1958 TORNADO . . . is in your hands now-though how it ever got out what with lost pictures and last minute layouts is still unbelievable to us. We chose a seasonal theme and tried to present pictures of events, places, and people which would carry it out. In the years to come when you pick up the book, if you can flip through it and think . . . "this was LHS in 1958," we did our job well. Anyway, it's all yours now, and we hope you like it. X While she is helping the editors, Tahita, our assistant editor, is also learning some of the responsibilities that go with being editor. As picture manager, Sue is in charge of all pictures. Dick is the manager of staff funds and business. Surely our book would never be finished without the efforts of our facultysponsor. In addition to her duties as an English teacher, Miss Speck has been a wonderful sponsor for the past ten years. Not every boy with an entrancing smile can he voted Cutest Boy. This boy is invariably an outstanding stu- dent in LHS. By the same token, not every girl with a charming turned-up nose and sparkling eyes can be her class favorite. She must make herself "useful as well as beautiful." XX'e think this year's annual has an ex- cellent example of this philosophy. The prospect of summer vacation sends happy echoes resounding through the halls of Lamesa High School. Many of those who are leaving now realize that our school is more than a mass of rock and mortar. This building and others like it are living symbols of man's thirst and quest for truth and knowledge. As you go out its doors, stop and look back. Think what it has given youg then smile and say a "Thank you" before you go on your way. 5 TAYLOR PUBLISHING CO M If M. "fP"f 1 ...w 4-91. 3.40 .r,-,ff fr ,Q -Q ..
