GO FOR THE GOLD The determination of the students, teachers, administra- tors, and staff at Lakewood High School can be expressed in four words, Go For The Gold. This year at Lakewood High School, Go For The Gold meant something unique to every person. Students were encouraged to set their goals high and make valiant efforts to reach them. Teachers motivated their students to strive for success, by encouraging them to reach their potential, becoming the best that they could be. Ad- ministrators led our school forward by creating an organized and pleasant environment for all. Finally, the classified staff worked to provide the necessary services to everyone at Lake- wood High School. Go For The Gold , a feeling shared by students, teachers, administrators, and staff made 1988-89 a great year at LHS. 2 Go For The Gold 1. The veterans of the school took time out to show the rookies the way around, and to make sure they enjoyed their three years at Lakcwood High. Welcome Aboard, was an attitude shared by eve- ryone at LHS. Rallies and other on campus activities helped make the new kids on the block welcome, to get them in- volved in the traditions of Lakcwood High School, while having fun as well. With help from administrators, teachers. and fellow students, the newcomers quickly felt at home, ready to participate in all that LHS had to offer. Their first year at Lakewood High School was certainly more enjoyable as a result. Welcome Aboard , a feeling that reached out to all who came to be first-time Lancers in 1988-89. Welcome Aboard SPECIAL RENDEZVOUS Never ceasing to diligently fill students ' time with ex- citement, escape, and even a bit of fanaticism, the Special Rendezvous of Lancers brought much to see and do. Wheth- er relaxing at the beach, or taking it up, up, and away on a short plane ride over the city, the meeting place was always an important part of the plans. A day spent at the enchanting place called Disneyland was an example of this idea. Some LHS students thought studying for that big test was the way to spend time away from school, while others would rather carve up the ski slopes on a sunny afternoon. No matter where or when Lancers spent their free time, the key to making the most of it was relaxation. The Special Rendezvous of each person at Lakewood High School meant something unique to each and every one of them. 6 Special Rendezvous 1. Jeremy Pilchman utilized his time studying for that big test. 2. Jason Cox went aerial. 3. Mr. Flynn and his soccer players prepared for a plane ride. 4. Whether it was skateboarding on handrails, dressing up for Halloween, or even taking off to the local playground for a quick climb on the monkey bars. Lancers held on to their old ways of having fun. Some had the urge to dust off their old rollerskates, go down to the skating rink, and take a stroll down memory lane. Others, with thoughts of the future and what that holds in store for them, found preparing for that big test the thing to do. No matter what activity they were involved in, students remembered that the next day brought school, homework, and studying. However, responsibilities took a back seat to youthful pursuits, and Lancers lived by the idea that it ' s Never Too Late to enjoy them. BUSY SIGNALS Although the busy schedules of Lakewood High School students drained their energy, they always seemed to keep up their Lancer spirit and support of LHS. The eagerness of students to strive for success was exhibited when it came to jobs, homework, and late night practices. A different life began for many Lancers when they found themselves punch- ing a time card after the end of seventh period. For those who didn ' t find themselves in a uniform, favorite hobbies like surfing consumed their free time. Some Lancers found no need to leave the campus to participate in their favorite activities, while others found a desire to get away at times. Regardless, one of the unifying themes of LHS students was to do their best at school, and away from Lakewood as well. Being busy was a way of life for Lancers, but an enjoyable one. 10 Busy Signals IB 1. LHS colorguard worked overtime perfecting routines. 2. Ms. Davis helped students understand computers. 3. Many Lancers made it a point to include their parents in many of their activities, is it so strange that a daughter might want her mother ' s advice on an outfit for school, or is it just a scheme to get hold of the credit cards? Could a son enjoy his father ' s company and conversation while working underneath the hood of his brand new car, or could it be that he really needs help? Whatever the reasons may have been, many LHS students were fond of spending time with their parents, and saw the need to seek advice from Mom and Dad whenever possible. The bond between parents and their teenagers was a constant that endured now and for all time at LHS. The students and parents of Lakewood High School, special people who know that being together is the most important thing of all. ' ;aiT  . 1. Food was one thing that definitely tested their dedication to that ideal. Whether it was a healthy salad, or sinful chocolate chip cookies, a quick meal at a fast food franchise, or just munch- ing goodies 24 hours a day, you could be sure that Lancers had difficulty resisting. LHS students were known to plan gath- erings just for the sake of eating. Have you ever heard of a TOGO party? Not a toga party, but a TOGO party? This is where the main attraction is a six foot sandwich that towers over your head. What could be more irresistable than that? The connection between Lakewood High School students and their favorite foods made the idea of resistance an impos- sibility. Attempt to be virtuous, nice try. Simply Can ' t Resist I 5 TOP GUNS Lakewood students only strived to be the best. Whether academic or athletic, you could be sure that LHS would always try to come out on top. Some extraordinary students set themselves apart by their dedication to success. The end- less workouts and practices helped to develop our most out- standing athletes. The potential 4.0 ' s endured a different, but just as grueling, mental challenge in pursuit of their perfect grade point averages. Our musicians went through many hours of repetition to get it jusi right, as did our dramatists. The pressures to be the best, in the face of strict competition, set these Top Guns apart from the rest. This is a tribute to their sacrifices to achieve greatness. They brought outstand- ing recognition to themselves and to Lakewood High School. 1 6 Top Guns c 1. Kristin Boaz and top gun King ready for graduation. 5. Capt. Kirk. 2. Top Guns 17 DRESSED TO IMPRESS You are what you wear, and many Lancers were dressed to impress each and every day. Some Lancers went for the casual look of sweats and Lakewood High School fashions, while others liked to put on a suit and tie every morning. Even some of the Lakewood teachers had a style of their own. Some of their statements may have been strange, or a bit loud, but they were statements to be sure. Another concern of LHS students is HOW they looked in their clothes. The health trend of the 1 980 ' s, aerobics, was one way that Lancers chose to have the desired look. However, one thing was certain. The motivation behind the fashions at LHS was to give a good impression. No matter what they wore, or how they looked, you could be sure that the idea was Dressed to Impress , along with dressed for success. 1 8 Dressed To Impress 1 . Mr. Wood evaluated Carlos Iriarte ' s outfit. 2. Lakewood fashions were the choice for these Lancers. 3. Working out was fun for Susan Heath and friends. 4. These Lancers learned that the difTerent responsibilities of having a part-time job, while keeping up their grades, were related. Burning up the Midnight Oil meant staying up late to finish assignments after a full day of school and work. Lancers earned extra money or gained valuable experience toward a future career through their extra-curricular em- ployment. Some Lancers helped a customer find that perfect outfit, while others prepared our favorite frozen yogurt, or made sure that special video movie was the highlight of an evening. These LHS students all shared a common expe- rience, balancing between school and work. They were sure to have many busy days and nights along the way. TH E SKY ' S THE LIMIT No matter how difficult the situation, Lancers always seemed to pull through. For example, senior Kristi Dunlavy ' s attitude was, If you put your mind to it, you could ac- complish anything. Perhaps seniors found it easy to adopt this outlook, but for sophomores and freshmen the transition from junior high to senior high was anything but simple. However, as the year progressed the initial doubts and fears were erased, and these new Lancers fit right in. Once com- fortable as Lakewood Lancers, thoughts of the future dom- inated. Faced with many obstacles, students quickly learned that the key to success was hard work. No matter what the task, it could be accomplished with the utmost skill and grace. Whether senior, junior, sophomore, or freshman, Lakewood students realized the only limits placed upon them were their own. 22 The Sky ' s The Limit 1 . Going to class, studying, and participating in the various activities at LHS, helped bring them together. .Another quality shared by Lancers was to Breakaway from the rigors of school and enjoy a wide variety of recreational pursuits. Leisure time was always more pleasurable with friends who shared the same interests. Places such as the Queen Mary or the beach were popular choices for some. Others chose to be more active by surfing and skateboarding their way to relaxation. Cars be- came very helpful in defeating school-related stresses, as put- ting the pedal to the metal and turning up the tunes was a wa to escape, if only for a short time. LHS students found out that on campus or off, their hard work never ended. Breakaway 25 1 . A romantic date was shared by Mike Dalzell. and Lisa Pittman. 2. HEARTBEATS Pitlcr-pat, pitlcr-pat, heartbeats loudly sounded at the thought of these special moments shared between special friends. Lancers were a bit romantic at heart, and no matter what season it was, romance always seemed to blossom. The hope that there would always be that certain person to en- courage us with a warm smile, a friendly spirit, and an ear to listen to, became a common thread among LHS students. The search for that person was an important part of a Lancer ' s life as well. Through good times and bad, sharing the highs and lows of daily life became a part of each person ' s existence at Lakewood High School. The friendships forged here would last a lifetime, leaving Lancers with memories to be cherished forever. The beating of Lancer hearts meant close relation- ships, special and unique to all. THE BIG SPLASH Water was a major factor in the life of a Lakewood Lancer and helped them to relax away from studies and work. They found many ways to accomplish this task. Running down a slip-n-slide at full speed was one way. Another might involve some friends engaged in an impromptu water balloon fight. Even a car wash that was supposed to be a fund raiser could be turned into a raging water battle by overzealous Lancers. Squirt gun fights and amusement parks also helped quench the thirst that LHS students had for liquid refreshment. It seemed that they could never get enough of Mother Nature ' s H20. What would happen to them if they didn ' t live in Southern California? Could you imagine the difficulty these Lancers would have in a different locale? They were fortunate to be able to enjoy it while they could. ' ' - mbatr ' 28 The Big Splash 1. Junior Senate splashed at Disneyland. 2. Matt Paige, Chris Sestito. That age old idea of a slumber party still lived in 1 988-89, and gave our girls valuable opportunities to giggle, gossip, and goof-off. A makeover that might impress that special guy on Saturday night ' s date, or sharing secrets about him, were other common experiences of LHS ladies. Nothing could excite them more than being inside a house filled with choc- olate, chocolate, and more chocolate. Lancer girls were very special, as were the friendships and good times they shared at LHS. These memories they shared will last now, and forever. Girls, Girls, Girls 31 THE GOLDEN GLOW OF SUCCESS That golden glow always seemed to be shining in the eyes of the students at Lakewood High School. With so many goals to be attained, there was never a dull moment in a Lancer ' s life. The students of LHS had their pinnacles and their pit- falls, but the effort to succeed was there every day. Their motivation to excel came in many different forms. For some, being able to exchange their caps and gowns for college sweatshirts was the main inspiration, while for others, things as little as a smile, or as big as a victory in a crucial game, gave Lancers a feeling they wanted again and again. Thoughts of making that slam dunk, or having that heart-to-heart talk with Mr. President, helped keep dreams alive in the minds of all at LHS. The Golden Glow Of Success shined upon our school this year, and will keep on shining for years to come. 32 The Golden Glow Of Success 1. Each day of the week represented a different style of music, ranging from reggae to country-western. The week was highlighted by daily rallies prepared by the cheer groups and LHS Cabinet. These activities included a limbo dance, musical chairs, and a pass the orange contest. KNAC radio hosted live entertain- ment for students to enjoy during their lunch period on Hard Rock day. The Varsity Football team topped off the week by defeating Wilson High School in the big game. Both Varsity and JV Yell had long- lasting summer practices to motivate the crowds for fall and spring sports. These practices involved aerobic workouts, jumping drills, and conditioning for the upcoming year. In addition to athletics, there were spectacular rallies and special events where they performed amazing stunts and mounts to un ite that Lancer spirit and show their support for LHS. Also part of the Lancer pride were Majorette Michele Row and Mascot Vince Arenas. They expressed pearly white smiles, performed difficult baton tosses, and entertained the crowds with their enthusiasm. The hard work of both squads began during the summer when they started preparing for cheer camp. It was summer vacation for some, but not these girls, as long hours of practice took up their spare time. Song ' s high kicks and Flag ' s dazzling tricks kept crowds amazed at the rallies and sporting events, as these squads inspired the spectaors to give maximum support to the LHS Lancers. Although rallies and football games were important, they were not the only activities the Pepsters participated in. The girls were re quired to attend other campus events, make mo- tivational posters each week, and encourage school spirit at all times. Lakewood ' s NJ ROTC unit was the largest coeducational club on campus and its members represented LHS in various city and state competitions throughout the year. The cadets performed many services for the school and the community such as: ushering at theatrical events and football games, cleaning up the grandstands afterward, and hoisting flags every day at various locations on campus. In addition, on Thursdays they wore their crisp black and white uniforms to let everyone know they were members of an elite group at LHS. Despite the amount of work involved in producing a yearbook, the class made sure to have a good time while doing it. From the beginning of the year to the last pages of the book, everyone was focused on meeting their deadlines. All students had to write copy, create captions to fit pictures, and for- mulate unique layouts with the utmost precision. Also, mak- ing sure names and faces matched was an endless task. How- ever, having fun was also an important aspect of the class. Mr. Rob Wigod, Citadel advisor, stated, Putting together this year ' s Citadel was a great challenge, made much easier by the energetic and creative staff members. The 1989 Citadel — a labor of love. Enjoy it, we did. 1. Editor Amy Harter dreamed of the touches she would put on her Citadel pages. 2, The Academics and Classes sections, under the direction of editors Kelly Green and Raquel Miller, posed for a quick photo while continuing to work on the annual. 3. The Citadel staff enjoyed a game of Uno to relieve the stress and anxiety of yearbook work. 4. Mr. Wigod and staff were always smiling for the camera. 5. The Student Life section, under editors Lori Pehoski and Katrina Williams, worked together to meet early deadlines. 6. Editors John Moreno and Melanie Sedlak produced an action-packed Sports section for athletes and spectators to enjoy. 7. After a long day, Cassandra Brandt, Karie Madden, Keli Bougher, Michelle Payne, and Julie van Renesse cooled their heels in the nearest pool. 8. A casual setting was ideal for the Citadel staff. Giving the gift of music was their goal, and the results of long practice hours proved how talented they were. Under the direction of Mr. Siemsen, the orchestra was involved in many activities. School assemblies, providing the music for the Spring musical, and performing at the Winter and Spring concerts were were just some of them. Concert Mistress Susie Park stated, I ' ve played the violin since the fourth grade, but this year was the most memorable of all. The concerts and the musicals were the highlights, but I am especially thankful to Mr. Siemsen for leading us. The LANCE, Lake- wood High School ' s monthly newspaper, was the result of the hard work and dedication of the advanced journalism class. They used their skills to inform and inspire the Lancer stu- dent body. Each issue provided news of everything from new teachers and advice columns, to activities and sports. Under the guidance of Mrs. Ott, aspiring reporters wrote- and edited their own articles, which provided Lakewood students with a solid foundation in journalism. 1. LANCE advisor Mrs. Oil looked inlcnsc while she lislencd to one of her budding journalists. 2. Editor-in-chief Jessica Cardenas helped Susan Wolf with a from page layout. 3. The play followed them during the course of one term at Berkeley School, where they received the sympathy and understanding of psychiatrist Alan Swinford and his staff David possessd a fear of being touched, which was finally overcome thanks to the psychiatric help, along with constant encouragement from Lisa. This call was often heard from an after- school practice in the dance room. Enthusiasm, spirit, and talent were put together to form this year ' s beginning, in- termediate, and advanced dance teams. The life of a Lake- wood High School dancer involved a series of stretches, leaps, and splits. The development of these skills began during the summer, when the teams first started rehearsing. Throughout the school year, these dedicated ladies continued to improve upon their routines, building toward the culmination of their efforts. The 1 989 Spring Dance Concert was the highlight of the year in which all the dancers contributed toward a spec- tacular show. This final product, the result of countless hours of practice, delighted audiences immensely. The choreagraphy and synchronization of the members left the spectators amazed. This year ' s dance teams have great talent and are really fun to work with, commented Mrs. Janet Quinn, the dance instructor. With leaders like Stacey Kuri- owa, Shannon Russell, and Janelle Junier, the advanced dance team strove for perfection all year long, while setting the standards for future years. 1. Stacey Kuroiwa, Diane Clarke, and Kim Loprieato performed an out- siandmg loe touch. 2, Shannon Russel and Alyssa Carter showed off their particular talents. 3. Tammi Cason, Debbie Gibson, Rocio Carbajan, Alma Galleagos, Anette Carrillo, Tatiana Fenton, and Socorro Herrera struck a final pose to finish off an exciting routine. 4. These Lancer leaders were responsible for many of the succesful goings on at LHS. Homecoming, pep rallies, Friday food sales, and the memorable Winter Formal, were just a few of the activities produced by the Fall Cabinet, ably led by ASB President Lisa Johnson. The spring semester brought new faces, headed by ASB President Cassandra Brandt. Spring Week, the blood drive, more pep rallies and food sales, and the highlight of the year, the 1989 Senior Prom, kept the the Spring Cabinet working hard for the benefit of everyone at LHS. The spirits of Lakewood ' s Lancers were lifted by the ded- ication of the Cabinet members and their le ader. Activities Specialist James Wickman. The combination of these el- ements resulted in an all — school musical that continued the excellent tradition of outstanding productions at LHS. The story presented the events that happened to the real Maria Rainer and her family. The tale, set in the time of Adolf Hitler ' s Nazi Germany, centered around a storybook romance involving a young postulant who became a governess for the strict, but caring, Baron Von Trapp and his seven children. This American favorite first opened on Broadway in 1959, but came to LHS thirty years later in the spring of 1989, and was expertly performed in front of cheering audiences for three consecutive nights. The careful direction of Mr. Paul Williams, vocal guidance of Mr. Marshall Ramirez, and ex- traordinary orchestration of Mr. Ralph Siemsen, insured a memorable evening for all who saw the Lancer version of The Sound Of Music . 1. Maria Rainer (Kim Huber) played a captivating melody to the seven children. 2. The beauty of the nun ' s voices enriched the audiences ' enjoyment of the performance. 3. The Fabulous Four: Messrs. Siemsen, Williams, Gathe, and Ramirez were the leaders of this year ' s producton. 4. Friedrich and Elsa Schraeder (Matthew A. Roberts and Jennefer Clark) communicated on matters of concern to both. 5. Sharing special secrets were Liesl and Rolf Gruber (Lani Kaeka and Daryl Fogg). 6. Various learning activities went on inside the classrooms that forged relationships between students and faculty that were very special to both. Every Lancer experienced different subjects each day, but what set those classes apart were the instructors who directed, motivated, and challenged students to achieve their potential. Students found that their teachers shared many of the same extra-curricular interests. For example, they might catch their favorite teacher participating in a range of activities from boating to pole climbing. Each faculty member brought a unique personality to their class- room, which allowed them to reach out to their stu- dents in a variety of ways. Inside the buildings it was algebra to zoology and all stops in between, but out- side the confines of LHS it was anything goes.
