Judson Who is the most active man on the LHS campus? Who is called Mr. Lakewood because of his devotion to the school and to community affairs, such as the Rose Float Committee, the Kiwanis Club, the Pan American Festival, and many others? Mr. Judson is not only the number one Lancer, he is also a leading cit- izen in Lakewood. As the sen- ior member of the high school principals in the district, Mr. judson ' s judgment and experience are valued assets. His willing- ness to devote countless hours to both his school and to the district is an indication of the high calibre of man LHS has as principal. Oftentimes he can be seen communicating with students and with the staff regarding the welfare of the school. His friendly manner and his outgoing personality erase the stereotype many peo- ple might have about school administrators. One group of students observed, He always has the time to talk with us, and he really listens to our problems. Being at the helm of such a large school is diffi- cult enough, but achieving excellence for that school, as Mr. Judson has done, is the supreme achievement. Most feel that his initials, H. I. J., really stand for Honesty, Integ- rity, and Justice. It retells the strange, appealing and utterly fascinating story of the two mentally-dis- turbed adolescents; David, only son of wealthy parents, over-protected by a dominat- ing mother, and Lisa, the waif who has never known parental love. The play follows the theme during the course of a term at Berkley school, where they receive sympathetic understanding and psychiatric help. LHS students turned in outstanding performances and produced one of the most 1 7 interesting plays in years. David and Lisa 39 Music Man Meredith Wilson ' s fable about Harold Hill, the supersalesman who converts kids to musicians through faith, is American nos- talgia at its best. The tactic of Professor Hill, a 1912 con man. It is to whip up enthusisasm in small towns for starting a brass band and to get parents to buy instruments and uniforms and then skip town without teaching a note. Hill ' s musical illiteracy creates suspicion in Marian the Hbrarian, but not enough to dis- pell romantic interest in the hero. Volleyball Tennis Lakewood High ' s girls ' volleyball t(Mm held strong a LHS tradition by taking lh(! first place biirth in Moore League competition. This is the sec- ond year out of thrcu; that the Lancer women have made it to the GIF play- offs. Even though the team met defeat in its first match against Roll- ing Hils, honors were held high by; junior Heather Forbes, MVP of the league and Diane Rasmussen and Nancy Hogan receiving all-league merit. The JV team struggled to finish fifth, but the all-sophomore team has great potential. Much action will be expected from this squad next year. The varsity tennis team was in a turmoil with only two retur- nees. The team had a difficult time getting under way, ending up with three wins in league action. Fine per- formances from number one singles player Sandy Blazer and top doubles star Sheila Kalman and Suzanne Steege earned these athletes a spot in the Moore League tournament, with Sheila and Suzanne making the all- league team. Coach Gonzales hopes with this year ' s experience next year ' s team will be at their best. FRONT ROW: C. Todd. J. Gissell, A. Goodwin, K. Fannin, E. Sandoval. ROW: T. Bjerke. ). Petti. K. Froyd. V. Lakewood cap- tured a perfect season to be named Moore League champi- ons. The Lancer team then went on to a 6th place finish in GIF competition at Mt. Sac. The team was led by outstand- ing runners Kathryn Motsha- gen and Cheryl Gilpin. They were backed up by other fine athletes Gheryl Thompson, Gheryl Traurig and Joanne Kuestner, helping Lakewood to another victorious season. The 1979 girls ' basket- ball team did a fine job for such a rough season. Many individuals stood out to make a tough team. Three year var- sity player Julie Herrera, along with Heather Forbes, led their squad in high scoring. Gayle Yeates and Sheila Kalman bal- anced the team with their fine performances. The junior var- sity squad finished as Moore League champions, with great leadership provided by Barb Brodeur and Debbie Taylor. H . FRONT ROW: C. LaTourette, C. Herzog, A. Tobias, K. Motshagen, C. Lakewood ' s adminis- trative staff worked hard to keep the Lancers number one. Readmit procedures were changed this year due to cut- backs in office clerks; students now had two days to obtain absence slips, but only before or after school, or during lunch. Students found that the counselors had many answers to their questions about pro- grams, graduation, academics, and personal lives. These courses taught students about the world around them and how their government worked. Juniors learned about the sto- ries behind the great moments in American history and many of them chose to take the advanced placement examination in order to get college credit for their knowl- edge. Physiology and anatomy students learned the names of their body parts as well at their functions and how to keep them healthy. Other sciences included earth science, life science, and human biology. The popular elective systems remained in effect in 1979. Sophomores found they needed to know how to swim before they took advantage of this program. Some of the electives included badminton, football, team wieghtlifting, gymnas- tics, basketball, tenis, golf, and archery. To round out the year, students tried to pass the presidential fitness test of agil- ity, strength and stamina.
