lllany potential qualities of future citizens are found among
the members of the Math Club. The essentials necessary
for a good mathematician are fundamentally the same as
those for a good citizen. A compelling interest in the sub-
ject is as necessary in math as it is in citizenship. The abil-
ity to think clearly, to apply usefully the knowledge which
he has gained, and to build for the future, are requisites of
a mathematician and assest to a citizen. The mathematician
possesses the benefits of a reasoning mind, thus he faces his
problems squarely and attempts to arrive at a logical con-
clusion. Not only to math problems does he apply his rea-
soning power, but to everyday problems as well. The mem-
bers of the lllath Club are conscious of presentday needs
for the exact science in balancing budgets, in paying bills on
time, in calculating interest on savings and loans, in numer-
ous researches, and in philosophical speculations. Their pro-
grams are varied, but to all they are interesting and chal-
The Commercial Club of Lakewood High School provides
a medium through which the commercial students may
acquire knowledge of the business of today. They gain this
knowledge by associating with other members of the club.
Each member makes it his duty to bring to the meetings
interesting items related to the commercial field so that
everyone anticipates club day with eager interest. Speakers
from various fields bring contact with the outside business
world into the club room so that theory is not too remote
from actuality. Competition is keen among members of the
Hi-Commercial Club, and this competition of today will
be an asset in the harder competition of the business World
of tomorrow. It is true that shorthand and typing are
difficult for some students, but to the Hi-Commercial Club
members woh take their commercial subjects seriously,
these subjects are interesting. They also are practical and
can be applied to the needs of everyday living.
