O linder the guidance of Mr. Hamilton, the Lakeside Tennis . . . lt has been evident to all that this year's tennis squad ranks alnong the schoolis best teams. Returning to the court this spring were ,lim Anthony, who piloted the squad, llill Vance. and Blair Dyson. The already favorahle outlook improved when Dick Rutherford, Ross Manning, John Usterhaug, Stuart Wiest, and Dave Becker signed up for the sport. Since only five boys were eligible for interscholastic competition, league play was severely handicapped. The prospects for next year, however, look exceptional. Rifle Club has had one of its most progressive years. Soren Normann won Bar Seven, Grieve attained Bar Two. and Pease. Youell and Baillargeon, completed Bar Une. Back next year to form the nucleus of a new squad will he such outstanding shots as Matthews, Bar Nine, Star Calvert, Bar Three, Lepsoe, Bar Two, Sharpshooters. Golf. . . Though the golf squad turns out in both the spring and the fall, all the matches take place just after the start of school. The fall squad consisted of Larry Hays, Blair Dyson, Earl Chiles, Charles Davis, George Drumheller, and W'impy Sargent. Despite the loss of Sargent after the first match, we finished third in the leagus. This spring Guy Hollister joined and immediately showed his skill at the game. and Hendrickson, Parsons, and Sigurd Normann, all Front: Hays. Dyson, Hollister. The basketball team was nosed out in a playoff game after ending the regular season in a tie. This years baseball team is leading the league and looks good enough to go all the way. We wish to express our appreciation to coaches Johnson and Lantonwine for their outstanding guidance of Parson athletics. Whitcombs . The Wfhitcombs first showed their capabilities by handily winning the Club Championship in football. Not content to rest on their laurels, football mainstays Hiatt, Dayan, the Calverts, and Blake proved their versatility by also winning the Club Championship in basketball. Under the impetus provided by leaders such as President Bill Calvert, Vice President Cappy Clarke. Sec- retary Rod Dayan, and ,lim Anthony, the club worked hard decorating the football field for games, readying the campus for Homecoming Day, and providing entertainment for half-time at the basketball games. The Whitcomb Club had an esprit de corps that added to the keenncss of the competition which was evident bctwccn thc clubs throughout the year. 37 ormltory LOUHCIT Front I Xbbe flrlham D Hermm Burlmgham Graham R Buck Huh ard Chiles Dratoblv We kll An lhonv lPresldenti oore Hall Dormltory . The Gold Stars. . . The Goldstar, originated by Lakeside's first headmaster, Charles K. Bliss, is one of the oldest and finest traditions of the school. The receiver of this award must fulfill four necessary qualifications: first, he must have a scholastic average of C or better, second, he must have a fondness for and success in sports, third, he must exhibit qualities of manhood, truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindlincss, unselfishness, and fellowship, fourth, his exhibition, during school days, of force of character, of leadership, and interest in schoolmates nmst be excellent. If a Gold Star is won three out of four quarters, it is permanent. If four annual Gold Stars are won, one of these in his senior year, he will be awarded at graduation the permanent Maroon and Gold Star, the highest honor a boy can receive at Lakeside School. The Honor Roll . . . During the past two years, the students of Lakeside have watched a new and growing tradition, The Honor Roll, instituted by Mr. Robert S. Adams, late headmaster, its purpose is to encourage higher scholastic achievement. To be on the honor roll, a boy must have a scholastic average of B, or better, with no grade below a B-. In return for his efforts he is not required to attend study halls and may, during these periods, visit any place on the campus except the dormitory and refectory. Dormitory boys are granted the additional privilege of remaining in their rooms during evening study hall hours. Eight names appeared on the first honor roll which was posted at the close of the first semester of the school year 1949-1950. So far this year thirteen boys have won this award for three consecutive marking periods. 39 1 Q fx sv Lincoln 'll Forum l 1 'Q Symons. Heiser lWinnerI. Bull, Graham Lincoln Forum . . . Une of the oldest traditions at l.alu-side is the Lincoln Forum. instigated as an oratorical contest to augment interest and proficiency in public speaking. it has become one of the highlights of every school year. The four finalists from the l'pper School were Rae Graham. ,lohn Bull. ,lim Symons. and Peter lleiser. Honest Abe Symons gave the first talk in the guise of Lincoln and addressed the audience as if old Abc himself had returned from the dead. The second s weaker was Peter Heiser, talking on the Lincoln-Don 'las l r- l- Debates. ,lohn Bull analyzed the Southerner's point of view. The final speaker, Rae Graham, gave his own personal ideas regarding the Great Emancipator. The winner, Peter Heiser. had a fine speaking voice and presented his material in a well-organized manner. Band... This fall a new activity was added to the school's curriculum---a band was formed. This plan was originated and carried out by Mr. Johnson and Don Dexter. who played. respectively, the piano and the drums. Uther additions were made: ,lack Pancratz on the trombone: Henry Pennypacker and Malcolm Nlcflreery strum- ming the guitars: Mac Huff and Bob Farrell playing the fiddle-sz Gene Sherwood on the saxophone: Marshall Dutton helping out on the piano: and Larry Pierce of the lower school playing the clarinet. During the course of the year, the band held three auditions, the biggest of which took place the night before Homecoming at thc football rally. These boys are to be respected for having the initiative to introduce and organize a new group of this kind. The football team. especially. appreciates the backing it received from the band. lt is to be hoped that the masters will not let this activity die. 40 The Tatler Staff Nlhitlied. ,l:u'lvon. lfurrell tlfdilorl, lluwt- llfdilurl. llvllrsy. lly-on The Tatler . .. The '51 Taller, edited by Bob Farrell and Blake Howe, was well-received. The emphasis was placed neither upon social news nor upon sportsg the policy of the paper was to represent all phases of student life with equal vigor. Due to the fact that there was no journalism class this year, the Taller staff worked under difficulties not previously encountered. For this reason the number of issues was cut down somewhat. This detriment was overcome, however, hy the originality and frank outlook of the staff. Supplementing the main editors were Bob Whithc'4l, a fine feature editor, and Pete Heussy. a capable sports editor. The athletic events were given excellent covrage by ,lim Symons. These factors combined were responsible for a more than adequate publi- cation, a feature rare in the history of a school. V T e umldlan Staff 'T Front: Anthony. lluynn 4l'lditorI. Buck: Clarke. Dick Nloomss Track Prospects . I have compiled the results of the first Lower School Track Meet and I am sure the Lion Cubs will have a good track team. In the 100-yard dash and the 50-yard dash we have Nlader and Damski respectively the outstanding sprinters. Mader s time for the 100-yard da. h was 12.0 seconds and Damski s time was 7.2 seconds. Although in the shot put L Abbe held top honors by throwing the eight-pound shot 32 feet 6 inches Mader might prove a threat to him In the hi h jump Parsons cleared 4 fee-t 3 inches and hopes to do better before the season s out. The pole vault which many people find difficult to elo was done by Phil Graham at a height of 6 feet 3 inches. Mader again is in the broad jump spotlight by le aping 15 feet 11 inches The, Maroons won the first relay' but even so both teams are evenly matched. The first Maroon and Cold Track Meet of the year resulted Colds 30 Maroons 29.
