It includes reading reports and articles to keep up-to-date on ideas in education as well as super- vising the daily matters of running a school. Mr. Charles Hoffman is completing his first year as Lakeside ' s staff assistant. He enjoys working with the students in his new position. Miss Barbara Bourff is a part-time coun- selor in addition to her teaching duties. She can be found in the office giving guid- ance two periods each day. Instrumental Music Students learn to play instruments and prepare for Lakeside ' s fine orchestra and bands in Mr. Warkentin ' s Instrumental Music classes. Latin Writing exercises help students get used to working with a new language, as they do in Mr. Schott ' s Latin classes. Lakesiders Study Language. Spanish Spanish, taught by Mrs. Petroff, is another foreign language Lakesiders may take. Lan guages are ninth grade electives. Lang. Arts All Lakeside students take lan- guage Arts in all three years of junior high- Dev. Reading In Developmental Reading classes, seventh graders work to improve their reading speed and comprehension. Dev. Lang. Eighth graders take Develop- mental Language for one semes- ter. In this class they concentrate on writing and speech. History Social Studies classes often vvatcl films, as Mr. Carlson ' s eighth grade History class is doing here Classes Occupy Lancers. Citizenship Social studies is not required for ninth graders, but they may elect Citizenship, which includes sociology and government. Biology Ninth grade Biology students study the structure of the bean and other plants, as well as animals- Math Math classes involve all students. They include General Math in all grades and Algebra for many ninth graders, as in this class. Study Hall Ninth graders spend one period in Study Hall every day or every other day alter- nating with music or art. Home Economics In Home Economics class girls learn to cook and sewi and also other valuable lessons in running a home. Industrial Arts Eighth grade boys and ninth graders who wish to, take Industrial Arts, where they learn to use tools and to make things. Art Students in Mrs. Milton ' s Art classes work in many art forms. Their work is frequently dis- played around the building. 1419784 Activities Concert Orchestra The Orchestra is the largest instrumental the year. at Lakeside. They play at several concerts during Lancers Make Music Concert Band The members of the Concert Band play at assemblies, pep sessions, and ninth grade basketball games. Dance Band Students who want more band training, in a smaller group, may join the Dance Band. Student Conducting Each year a few interested students learn the fundamentals of conducting. Here Mr. Warkentin goes over a score with his trainees. Cadet Band Seventh and eighth graders prepare for the other groups by playing in the Cadet Band. This group plays at eighth grade games. Home Economics Club Miss French leads the Home Economics Clubl for girls to develop their cooking and sewing skills. Students in the Art Club, sponsored by Mrs. Milton, have a chance to draw, paint, and sculpt. Knitting Club The Knitting Club teaches girls the basic skills of knitting and crochet- B ing. Miss Mintzer is the advisor. Shop Club In the Shop Club students learn to use the tools safely and well and learn to make things. Mr. Barrett is the sponsor. Model Building Club The Model Building Club is a group of boys who enjoy putting models together. The boys bring their equipment to school and work with Mr. Caster ' s assistance. Girls ' Intramurals Girls ' Intramurals are held after school twice each week to give girls a chance to participate in team sports and to stay physically fit. Mrs. Wakley and Mrs. Petroffare the sponsors. Lakesiders Stay Fit, Boys ' Intramurals Boys who are not on school teams still have an opportunity to participate in sports at two days a week. Mr. Kaufman and Mr. Schoeffare club sponsors. Lettermen ' s Club The Lettermen ' s Club was originated this year by Mr. Howe and Mr. Taylor. Any boy who has earned a school letter mayjoin. heer for Teams ep Club lr. Eckart and Mrs. Rinne lead the Pep Club, another new ub this year. It was started to establish a group of students who would know all the cheers and would lead the student body in spirit at games. Office Workers These ninth graders give up their study hall time to serve as office helpers. They act as messengers and as- sist the secretaries with the daily routine. Bicycle Patrol The boys on the Bicycle Patrol supervise bicycle traffic in the parking lot. They also set up saw horses to control car traffic and direct traffic for PTA meetings. Library Workers These students assist Mrs. Stuelpe and the students in the li- brary. They work before and after school and during study hall time checking out books, shelving books, and reading shelves. Audio- Visual he audio-visual workers help teachers by inning equipment for them, and by pick- ig it up and delivering it. They also are sponsible for taking care of the equip- lent Booster Club The girls in the Booster Club sell and collect tickets at games. They also sell bus passes and collect school banking money. Gym Workers fhese boys work in the gym cage. rhey help take care of the equipment ind distribute it to the boys. IWi Singing Lancers Mr. Schmutz ' s Singing Lancers are a group of eighth and ninth grade singers. They have won many honors and brought many awards back to Lakeside. Seventh Grade Glee Club Seventh Grade Glee Club gives seventh graders singing experience and helps train them for Singing Lancers. -4 ' WA c :- - «H Lancers Speak, Sing. French Club In French Club, sponsored by Mr. Koegel. interested students learn some con- versational French. Speech Club Miss Bourff and Miss Tyler are sponsors of the Speech Club. Members enjoy a variety of activities including speeches, debates, and plays. Typing Club Students learn basic typing skills in the Typing Club. Mr. Vachon is the club sponsor. World Affairs Seminar Mr. Carlson helps members of the World Affairs Seminar to become better informed by discussing current world problems. Chess Club Mr. Crum ' s Chess Club gives students a chance to learn the fundamentals of chess and to play the game. Outdoor Life Club Lakesiders may become sports- men, or at least learn about the outdoors, in the Outdoor Life Club with Mr. Lowe. Student Council The Student Council includ representative from each hom room and the officers of class. This year ' s Council office are (1. to r.) Greg Ada Fremion, Mark Helmke. Reserve Football The eighth grade football team had a successful season. They had one win, one loss, and one tie. Wrestling Mr. Taylor again sponsored a wrestling team this year. These ninth grade boys won fourth place in the city junior high tournament. Varsity Basketball Varsity basketball was almost a repeat of football. The team had a very successful season and brought second-place honors to Lakeside, losing the city championship to Kekionga in the final tournament game. m £3 ■ M Reserve Basketbi The Lancer reserves had a fair season with a lot of heartbreakers. The big- gest one came in the first game of the city tournament when the Lancers lost to Franklin by just two points. Seventh Grade Basketball The seventh grade basketball team, coached by Mr. Laurie, had a good year and showed much pron Varsity Cheerleaders Ninth grade cheerleaders were Judy Lotter. Ruth Johnstone. Pam Mertz, Janet Pearson, and Nancy Wise. Reserve Cheerleaders Marilyn Derr, Betty Boxley, Barb Bow- man, Sandy Kendig, and Tami Zahn served as reserve cheerleaders. Ninth Grade Track Track is coached by Mr. Adams and Mr. Kaufman. The season was barely underway when this book - to press, but all the signs pointed to a promising year!
