The Junior ROTC program concluded another successful year. The ROTC students competed in four orienteering meets and nine rifle meets, taking first place team trophies in each event. The girls' color guard participated in their first meet, taking third place. In addition, the Lakeside rifle team won the state championship for the fifth consecutive year. Four members of the rifle team were selected to attend a Junior Olympic match at Colorado Springs, Colorado. These boys were four of 110 chosen from the United States to compete in this match. Greg Wilson placed second, winning one gold and one silver medal, Holmes Scott placed fourth, Chip Sexton placed seventh, Bruce Kellar placed eighth. Because of his high score, Greg Wilson was eligible to go to Fort Benning, Georgia, all expenses paid. There he competed in the Pan-American games, which is a step below the Olympics. The results of the games were not known until the end of the summer. Also two cadets, Richard Sims and Scott Rinald, were selected as recipiants of four year Army ROTC scholarships.
