YS IIIID GIRIS STIITE Boys and Girls State: back row - John Varnedore, Kurt Johnston, Ernie Cook, front row - Lori George, Kim Foster Three boys and two girls were chosen to represent Lakeside as del- egates to Boys and Girls State. This is a significant honor because sever- al students are carefully reviewed by members of the faculty scholarship committee, which is appointed by the principal. The students reviewed are selected according to their scho- lastic achievements, character, and service, not only to their school, but also to their community and church. The purpose of Boys and Girls State is to provide a better under- standing of the local, state, and na- tional governmental procedures. During the students' stay at Boys and Girls State, a mock government is established. Each delegate is re- quired to campaign for an official po- sition. After the election of officials, the winners preside over their du- ties, taking their governmental re- sponsibilities seriously and making important decisions. Each delegate who has attended Boys and Girls State returns to his community with a deeper appreciation and a better understanding of his or her govern- ment. , , cm, rf 1-.f...W, I A T K I W fffdfvggeyl s Flag Raisers: left to right- John Edwards, David Shipper, Mike Rathbun. and Mike Jones. -g-, nw . i 'f 1 141

The members have a common goal of serving the student body, while at the same time, helping students to realize the seri- ous nature of organizing and maintaining school ac- tivities, rules, and regulations. In addition to serving the students, the council sponsored the following activities: Football and Bas- ketball Homecomings, fall and spring dances, a homecoming sign contest, a grocery raffle, a magic show, and a Christmas tree ornament display. upper left - SC advertises for the magic show which they spon- sored as a money-making project. middle right- Tamra Bowlin and Bryan Sligh show spirit on Far- mer!Zap Day as they prepare for homecoming ceremonies.
