Track Teams Experience Successful Season Boys Improve While Girls Get Stronger The Lake Preston boys track team continued to improve this year. More boys participated in track and several upperclassmen provided leadership and enthu- siasm as the season progressed. Although the team scored few firsts during the year, they con- sistantly had athletes finishing second, third or fourth. The boys managed to place fourth at the Eastern Dakota Conference track meet and second at the Da- kota Valley Conference track meet. Michael Anderson placed at several meets in the triple jump. He also broke the school record several times, including his jumps at the region track meet that missed qualifying for state by one-half inch. Other individ- uals having good years included Todd French and Darrin Suess in the hurdles, Wade Mobley in Above - Michael works on his technique. Bot- tom - Marsha Ellingson, Coach Thom- sen, Donna Bumann, Tracy Stewart, Stacy Stewart, Darrin Suess, Lisa Blach- ford, Maria Bergan, Michael Anderson, Coach Prather, and David Carlson. 28 Track the longer races, Matt Thomp- son, Brad Easland and Kirk Zeeck in the sprints. The girls track team contin- ued to build a strong track tradi- tion in Lake Preston. The 800- meter relay was undefeated all year long and the 1600-meter re- lay finished first or second at most meets. The girls success hinged partially on the depth of the team. A hamstring injury to senior Dana Houser might have meant defeat for the Diver relay teams, but eighth grader MAria Bergan filled in for Dana. With Maria running one leg of the re- lay, the team qualified for the state meet. Dana recovered in time to run at the state meet. In addition to the Diver re- lays, Sprinter Tracy and Stacy Stewart continued to dominate the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Support in the field events came from Dana Houser, Maria Ber- gan and Jennifer Blaschford. Teresa Anderson run the longer races and Tammy Scheidt con- tinued to improve in the open 400-meter dash. The girls season reached a peak when they fin- shed the state track meet num- ber two overall (See pages 32-33 for more details.). Team awards for the girls team went to Stacy Stewart for Most Valuable, Tammy Scheidt for Most Promising, Maria Ber- gan for Most Improved and Dana Houser for Most Inspira- tional. Team awards for the boys team went to Michael Anderson for Most Valuable, Wade Mobey for Most Promising, Darrin Suess for Most Improved and Todd French for Most Inspira- tional.

RUNNERS-UP! Girls Set State 800-Meter Relay Record The Lake Preston girls track team had “perfect” hand-offs on the way to setting a new state re- cord of 1.46.68 in the 800-meter relay. The foursome of Tracy Stewart, Stacy Stewart, Tammy Scheidt, and Dana Houser also hold the state record for the 1600-meter relay. The Lake Preston track team placed second overall at the State B track meet, improving on last years fourth place finish. The 800-meter relay had not been beat all year long, even though Dana Houser had been sidelined for a month with a pulled hamstring. Eighth grader Maria Bergan ran in Dana’s place during the last part of the year, including the region track meet. The Preston relay team also won the 1600-meter relay at the state meet. Maria ran in the prelims on Friday, while Dana ran in the finals on Saturday. Providing the points that gave the Divers their second place overall finish were sisters Stacy and Tracy Stewart. Stacy won the 100-meter dash and placed second in the 200-meter dash. Tracy took third in the 100-me- ter and fifth in 200-meter dash. Lake Preston finished second overall with 46 points. Bridge- water won the state meet with a total of 56 points. 30 State Meet Top - Tracy Stewart comes out of the blocks at Brandon Valley (Argus Leader photo).
