Divers Finish Season 15-6 The 87-88 Lake Preston bas- ketball team had a successful year as the Divers compiled a 15- 6 record. The Divers earned re- spect around the state as they defeated top teams such as Ar- lington, Howard and Elkton. The experienced team had a very high goal of reaching the state tournament, but that dream ended in the second round of the District tourna- ment. The Divers could not con- trol the Ramona Rockets as they beat the Divers with a 3-point field goal with only seconds left in the game. But the Divers bounced back the next night by beating the Elkton Elks for third place. It was a great victory to cap an outstanding season. Under the,direction of Head Coach Brian Heupel and assis- tant coach Klark Thomsen, the Divers averaged 65 points a game while giving up 55 points a game. Three seniors lead the Divers: Micahael Anderson, Todd French and Jay Hojer. Mi- chael was the leading scorer for the Divers, averaging 22 points a game. Juniors Steve Hasche and David Hovde averaged 16 and 10 points respectively. Both Anderson and Hasche controlled 24 Boys Basketball the boards for the Divers, rip- ping down 10 rebounds per game. Individual awards went to Mi- chael Anderson for Most Valu- able, Brad Easland for Most Im- proved, Todd French for Most Inspirational and Kirk Zeeck for Most Promising. Both Michbael Anderson and Steve Hasche ear- ned All-conference honors in both the Dakota Valley Confer- ence and Eastern Dakota Con- ference. The Divers finished second in the Dakota Valley Conference with a record of 5-2 and third in the Eastern Dakota Conference with a record of 5-2. Injury Hurts Diver Volleyball The 87-88 volleyball team had a frustrating year. Senior Stacia Wilkinson was still sidelined with an injury from the basket- ball season and despite hard work by underclassmen, the Di- vers could only manage 4 victo- ries while accumulating 13 losses. Junior Lisa Bratland lead all servers with 35 ace serves and a serving percentage og 78%. She also accounted for 82 of the 370 team points scored. Lisa hard work earned her the MVP award. Brab Casper, Tammy French Most Valuable Player Lisa Brat- land was also the Diver’s leading scorer. 26 Girls Volleyball and Paula Bratland had serving percentages of 83, 86, and 85%. Stacey McMasters lead the team with 25 ace spikes. Team awards went to Tammy French - Most Improved, Paula Bratland - Most Promising, Renae Olson - Most Inspirational and Lisa Bratland - Most Valuable.
