DIVER FOOTBALL French Makes All-Conference Jadd Odegaard and Jay Hojer Honorable Mention The 1987 Lake Preston Diver football team had a 1-7 record and that win was the first in two years. The win was against the Elkton Elks at Elkton and the Diver football squad spoiled their Homecoming. Head Coach Brian Heupel and assistant Dave Schmidt saw the improvement made by the Divers as the season progressed. With five seniors on the team, the leadership and inspiration was with the team through every minute of practice and during the games. Every player worked their hardest and always kept going no matter how tough the situation was. As a team the Divers averaged 71 yards rushing and 80 yards passing per game. Leading rush- ers for the Divers were Brian Easland and Scott Carlson. Eas- land compiled 201 yards on 59 carries while Carlson had 197 yard on 73 attempts on the sea- son. Todd French threw 158 times completing 58 for 534 yards. He also had 8 touchdown passes. Leading receiver was Kirk Zeeck, who caught the foot- ball 20 times for 276 yards. Tim Scheidt had 20 receptions for 223 yards. The Diver defense was led by senior linebacker Todd French who had 116 tackles, one fumble recovery, and one interception. French averaged 15 tackles per game. Senior lineman Jay Hojer and Jadd Odegaard had 80 tackles a piece. Todd French was named All- Conference in the Eastern Dako- ta Conference. Jay Hojer and Jadd Odegaard were given hon- orable mention honors. The team chose Todd French as Most-Valueable, Brian Easland as Most Promis- ing and Most Improved, and Jay Hojer as Most Inspirational. Inexperience and Youth Hurts Divers The Lady Divers Basketball team was very young during the 1987-88 season. Having just two Seniors returning, Coach Prath- er was forced to play underclass- men. Although the Divers only won one game, the experince and playing time gained by the un- derclassmen will pay off in the years to come. Senior Stacia Wilkinson lead the team with 11 points and 10 rebounds per contest. Freshmen Paula Bratland averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds per game. Lisa Bratland added 7 points and 4 points per game. Team awards were given to Stacia Wil- kinson as Most Valuable. Amy Danielson received Most Prom- ising while the Most Improved went to Shelly McMasters. Lisa Bratland was selected as Most Inspirational. Stacia Wilkinson also won All-Conference honors in both the Eastern Dakota Con- ference and the Dakota Valley Conference. 22 Girls Basketball Back row - Head Coach Shelley Prather, Stacy Stewart, Holly Wilkinson, Sheila Jones, Amy Danielson, Maria Bergan, Tammy Scheidt, and Coach Klark Thomsen.
