Dedication Marlys Jacobsen taught ele- mentary classes at Erwin, High- more, Wessington Springs, Volga, Franklin, and Lake Preston. In Lake Preston she taught from 1972-1975, as kindergarten teacher, and in the fall of 1975-1978 she was parttime librarian and kinder- garten teacher. As second grade teacher she taught through the years of 1978-1985. Marlys was born March 25, 1940 at Arlington to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Carlson. She attended country grade school near her home and graduated from Lake Norden High School. Marlys re- ceived a degree in education from South Dakota State College in Madison. She was a member of Progres- sive Young Women, Lake Preston Lutheran Church, and American Lutheran Church Women. Marlys passed away Friday, November 8, 1985, at the Kings- bury Memorial Hospital in Lake Preston. The sixth grade had an excit- ing year in basketball with a final record of 8-1 for the girls and 6-1 for the boys. The sixth graders played Wil- low Lake and were the only team to beat them, and defeated them three times. They placed first in the Lake Preston tournament, also placed first in the Willow Lake Lions Tournament, and they placed second in the Mitchell Tournament. The sixth graders also thought that the assemblies that the school had on Wild Bill West and the Vanishing Species were very excit- ing. The sixth grade went on two field trips. They went to Oldham, and to see the play “Wizard of Oz” in Brookings. Some of the students remem- bered putting on the Christmas concert and being the oldest grade in the elementary. -------- 3rd ------------- The Third Grade has been busy learning cursive writing this year. They first learned each letter then they put the letters together to make words. They found that this was a difficult task, but an enjoy- able one. Learning to write their names was fun. They have also been leaning how to multiply and divide in math. This is something new for them to practice. The elementary students participated in a local Spelling Contest in March. The winners will go on to a regional contest. They have been studying Blue Speller Words to get ready for this contest. The Third Grade won second place in the Home- coming Parade this year in the Elementary division with the movie MASH. -------- 2nd ----------- With seventeen girls and twelve boys, the second grade class leads the ele- mentary with the largest class. This class went through many changes dur- ing the 1985-1986 school year. One of the most diffi- cult changes they faced was the death of Marlys Jacobsen, and the hiring of their new teacher; Mrs. Leonhardt. Since this is the comput- er age, the second grade learned their reading and math skills on a computer. Also, they had a full-time aide for their convenience.
