The President of the U.S. hasjust commissioned the world's four most brilliant engi- neering minds to design. construct. and staff the first interplanetary. nuclear-powered. space community. The official title being: The Nuclear Environmental Rehabilitational Development Site . . . more com- monly known as NERDS. These scientists were voted on unanimously by their international colleagues and an amazing coincidence surfaced at their first meeting - all four were members of the l978 graduating class of Lake Park High School. They began comparing notes. A After their six year stretches in the Navy. Darwin and David were finally reunited by this project. David has received his doctorate in Electronic Engineering and for the past four years has been teaching the new all female cadet classes at Annapolis. They haven't been the best students but they've sure learned a lot about electromagnetic attraction!!! Darwin. on the other hand. has spent the last four years trying to get his doctorate. Lack of attendance has been his only obstacle. ln his case. it seems hours put in count more than a straight 4.0 average. ' lt was also discovered that during his absences. Darwin is fulfilling his secret dream of building a chain of Nut Huts across the U.S. One of his stipulations injoining NERDS was that a Nut Hut be built in the space community -- purely for sentimental reasons. This corporate conglomerate is to be headed by none other than Vereen Larson. and Kollen Ferden. two fellow classmates who also ammassed their fortunes through Nut Hut. lncorporated. lt's rumored that the real brain behind Ferden's third of the business is his private secretary. Joan Thompson. affectionately known as J Vereen does the paperwork for the corporation fa definite switch from High Schooll. Kollen is in charge of public relations. and .loan arranges their busy social schedules. They've decided the lives of corporate executives are simply too hectic. so they magnani- mously volunteered their services to NERDS. The third engineer chosen was none other than our Carla Petersen. She recently received the NOBEL Peace Prize for inventing the muffler for the Atomic Bomb. The government has approved funding for Carla to sneak into the U.S.S.R. and attach mufflers to all their bombs. That should Fix'em! This outstand- ing achievement has qualified her for the NERDS project as chemical engineer. Last but not least. Joel West has been chosen as mechanical engineer - he's the only one tall enough to paint the ceilings . . . Carla and Joel together are responsible for the actual structural design of the Nuclear Environmental Rehabilitational Development Site. They claim it's been just like the old Trig and Physics days back in High School. The staffing of the NERDS project was no easy task but when all the statistics were accumulated and evaluated. it was miraculously discovered that the top people in each field necessary for equipping the sta- tion also came from Lake Park's I978 graduating class. To keep law and order on a complex such as this a man of upright moral character. strong personal val- ues. and tremendous brute strength was necessary. The unanimous choice: Kevin Manly Anderson. Since graduation Kevin has received the title of Mr. Universe five times. The men fear him and the women adore im. To repair the damage done by our peace officer. it was necessary to enlist the aid of a chiropractor. Dan Gunnarson has accumulated a fine reputation for twisting things his own way and was the logical choice for this position. Not only was Dan necessary to help Kevin in his Lawful CD duties but a judge was necessary to interpret the laws of the community. Mavis Warling was the only possible choice here because of her experience in Business Law her Senior year and her firsthand knowledge of the difference between right and wrong - having participated in both areas to some degree. Brett Nordick was chosen as the transportational manager of NERDS. His job is mainly to tell people where to go and how to get there - not necessarily in that order. His skill in take-off and landings got him 84 this position. Administrative head of NERDS is Shari Anderson. ln order to assure her being there for the opening of the complex in .lune of I989. the engineers have requested her arrival for .lune of l988. in hopes that she'll be there on time. Shari's career as an author has been quite successful. Her book I0.000 Ways to Dispense with Parliamentary Procedure OR How to Break the Rules and Not Get Caught earned her her Masters' degree in Political Science and the right to be NERDS' administrator. Shari's right hand women is none other than Cheryl Pederson. She seems to be interested in Brett's job though. as she's always telling Shari where to go. how to get there and what to do when she does. Cheryl remained on as a professor at Concordia after her graduation and started a new course of study she refers to as Assertiveness Training. After her stay at NERDS. she plans to continue development of her course with a new class - Intimidation Made Easy. As this is a long term project. a school system was needed on the complex. The natural choice for this was Marthe Halvorson. who has followed in her father's footsteps and has become a school superintendent. Marthe has developed a new grading system which includes class credits for extra-curricular involvement and good moral conduct. Her office will be. at her request. located in the girls' bathroom at school to pre- vent any drug trafficking and sex that may originate there. Her high moral standards qualified her for NERDS. Staffed under Marthe is Naomi Mikkelson who. during her portrayal of Dean Green. in the High School Musical. found her true calling. She has a double major in History and Typewriting with a minor in Hall- Monitoring. She also found time in the last years. to compile a stereophonic recording of the mating calls of 250 Native American Birds. During her free periods on NERDS. it will be her responsiblity to patrol the school and discourage sex in the hallways. Becky Knutson has also followed the teaching profession and will instruct the NERDS' students in deportment. charm. and the social graces. She is also girls' football coach since she has mastered the art of successfully completing passes. Psychiatrist Charla Kappes has offered her services to NERDS as well. She felt this isolated community would be the perfect place to observe the efforts of deep space on varying intelligence levels. In order to accomplish this she brought along some of her own clients namely Eden Baer and Lori Sayler. Poor Eden's brilliant mathematical mind has left him. He does nothing but sit in his room and recite the ionization charts from his .lunior year Chemistry class. They say his mind snapped one day while counting chicken eggs after the automatic chicken egg counter broke. CharIa's other patient Lori Sayler finally cracked when her job as Guardian Angel became too much for her. One night at a party she was going around knocking on car windows. in her usual white gown and halo. when she was apprehended by an officer of the law. She had been mistaken for a white sheet. After hearing her story about how she alone had saved the virtue and purity of her classmates from the corruption of the world. the officer promptly committed her to Charla's care. Charla allows her freedom one night a week. Those nights find her at NERDS local theatre with a flashlight disturbing the performance of NERDS' famous actress Donna Speer. Donna captured the hearts of millions with her characterization of Zeldar Coneheadand now every night of the week. she does a repeat performance having perfected the art of Stim- ulation with a Bo Bo. To provide for the future of the Nuclear Environmental Rehabilitational Development Site's elderly. a rest home will be installed. Highly trained people with extensive backgrounds in sociology and bedpan washing were necessary. Need we say more? Lynn Lerud and Becca Holm ren were the obvious choices. To occupy their time. while not seeing to administrative duties. they hold wheelchair races down the halls. However. Mavis Warling found out t ey were taking bets on the side and is now working on the constitu- 85 tionality of a law which would take a slice of the profits for NERDS' government funder Shari's directionl. The money will be used to honor yet another classmate - Joan Vorgert. Joan has been honored by the United Nations for perfecting the only language the whole word under- stands - laughter. The monument will be a 25 foot. four ton replica of Joan's mouth laughing. NERDS' fire chief is to be Russell Davis. He's wanted the red hat ever since the class trip to the Lake Park Fire Department in third grade. Recently, he won the national acclaim by saving Betty Crocker's Homemaker of the Year, Judy Bull. from a raging inferno. She was conducting a course in French cuisine, when her soufle burst into flame and destroyed her gourmet cooking school, The House of Bull. NERDS immediately offered her the position of head chef and placed her in charge of housekeeping. NERDS is a very vast complex with a need for efficient communication to all points on the module. Dawn Seward will be laced in charge of communications systems. She was a natural choice since in case of electronic failure, she lias the capacity to replace the entire system with her own vocal abilities. The other two Dawns' in the l978 graduating class - Swenson and Dietz - have opened a combination drive-in theatre and night club for the entertainment of NERDS' culturally refined population. Because of special lighting on the complex they will operate the first twenty-four hour drive-in theatre - optly known as Dawn to Dawn. The medical staff of NERDS is also quite impressive. Headed by Doug Askelson, M.D. it also boasts two other '78ers who went into nursing: Vicki Larson and Darwin Olson. Vicki is dedicating her life to sorting out the intricacies of chromosome malilignment causin height differential. Darwin chose this field to prove that anything Vicki can do, he can do better. They boti enjoy the way Doug runs his hospital, especially if he takes them along when he cruises the streets looking for atients. Monetary arrangements for the Nuclear EnvironmentalJRehabilitational Development Site have fallen upon the shoulders of Richard Michaelson. His cool head for figures fespecially femalej and his smooth- talking style earned him his position. Robin Johnson is his number one teller and girl Friday. She's fallen into the habit of telling him it's Friday on Thursday thus attaining what labor unions have been fighting for for years, a four day work week with long weekends . . . Marty Braseth and Jim Biewer teamed up after graduation to start a chain of international food stores. Their start was a bit shaky, tho, since Marty tended to eat up most of the profits. Jim's winning smile and unblemished character managed to get them the loans necessary to continue dispite Richard's hesitance. ln order to pay off the loans they've been moonlighting as busboys in Connie Sieling and Ruth Peterson's res- taurant. Now that they have the NERDS food contract, Marty can eat all he wants and not have to worry where his next meal is coming from. Connie and Ruth are planning to open a restaurant on NERDS modelled after Lake Park High School's cafeteria. For atmosphere they've hired 25 midgets to come in and throw food at each other every day. With a little imagination and a lot of salt they hope to attract the lunch crowd from the soon-to-be-constructed wig factory, although that type of crowd is known to get a little hairy. The wig factory will be managed by the class beauties Joni Biewer and Sandi Smith. Since graduation Joni and andi have both decided that Telly Savalas knew where it was at and have gone for the bald look. They say they like the freedom to choose a different head of hair every day. The final staffing position to be filled was that of a newspaper editor. Darla Hendrickson had always been highly communicative in high school and had a nose for news so she was the natural choice. Darla's NERDS GAZETTE promises to be the hottest gossip sheet yet: But then why shouldn't it be when she's got people to write about like Lake Park's graduating class of l978???
