President John F. Kennedy MISS SCHOLASTIC A MURTY, in her sixth year at L.O.H. S., has by virtue of her untiring enthusiasm and devotion been a continual inspiration to higher standards of citizenship for the entire student body. The 1962 Lakers’ Log staff takes great pleasure in dedicating NEW FRON -TIERS to Miss Murty in recognition of the fine work she has done. Fo reward FOREWORD 1961-62 has been a year of firsts, a year of New Frontiers far Lake Oavego High School -- New buildings and additions: a new gym, a new cafeteria,, a language lab, more scienc labs, more classrooms, a new library-- New teaching methods: team teaching in social studies, advanced placement English for seniors, a lab pro-'•am in biology, lab instruction in foreign language courses--- Sports firsts: L.O. 's first victorious homecoming game, a trophy for our rally at the TYV jamboree--Increased student awareness of the importance of government and international relations evidenced by accelerated Student government and foreign exchange programs. In this yearbook, the LAKERS' staff hopes to recapture for each one of you the high points of a truly momentous year. I A New Look For In January of 1960, the school district floated a bond issue to finance the enlargements and improvements on Lake Oswego's high school buildings that were so desperately needed to meet the demands of ever-increasing student enrollment. Architects, carpenters, electricians, masons, and plumbers went into action and the year 1960-61 flew by as the workmen and machines forged ahead through seas of mud. 10 Lake Oswego The end result? A huge, new gym, a modem, airy library, an entire, new wing on the main building, a tremendous increase in on-campus parking space, and a brand new cafetorium with an extra big stage and much improved serving facilities were added to the L.O.H.S. campus. The school is now prepared to meet the expected increase in enrollment from the present 780 students to 1200 students in 1966 without further building additions. Graduation ceremonies were held in L.O.H.S. 's new gymnasium this year. Constructed for an eventual seating capacity of 1800, there were seats for only 1400 people as some of the old bleachers had not yet been replaced. There is space for two classroom stations behind the north bleachers when they are folded up. Downstairs there are a health room, a health classroom, an apparatus room, a physical education dressing room, team room, training room, equipment storage rooms, and a P.E. office. 12 During the past school year, L.O. 's new cafetorium has served lunches to nearly 800 people every day on a split shift lunch hour; but the spacious room as used in other ways also. Assemblies, dances, plays, meetings, and community functions were held here, the seating capacity numbering approximately 900 people. The full-length windows on the south side of the cafetorium are tinted to reduce glare. A big, new stage with flexible lighting and drama classroom space behind it, and an airy faculty lunchroom are all features of the new addition. GO Our Leaders This year’s Cabinet was under added stress coping with problems presented by the new facilities, a growing school, and working under a new adviser. However, through these new experiences the Cabinet gained insight into the desires and needs of the individual students. It met during seventh period every day to discuss and form Cabinet policies to be applied in the Senate and throughout the student body. The Cabinet members were elected in the spring of 1961 from a large field of qualified candidates. Dedicated to their offices, each one helped to keep our school running smoothly by solving many problems and exploring new ideas. Judy Swanberg, Chaplain, and Sue Rittel, Song Leader, fulfilled the duties of their offices very effectively at assemblies and meetings throughout the year. These appointive student body offices are not considered actual Cabinet posts. Breaking with last year's first-period precedent, the Senators were elected through their English classes this year so that each Senate room would contain members of only one class. Foreign students, class presidents, and publications editors sat in on meetings as honorary Senators. Student Body President Bill Bowling presided over Senate meetings with the able assistance of the other members of the Cabinet and the guidance of Mr. Don Kieling, Director of Student Affairs. Christmas party as the faculty sings and Santa passes out candy canes. Inter-Club Council The Inter-Club Council, made up of the presidents of honorary, interest, and service clubs at L.O.H.S., met once a month during the year to discuss problems and projects held in common by the thirteen school clubs. The I.C.C. initiated the annual Club Christmas Party this year and helped support all school projects. A highlight of each semester was the presentation of the Most Outstanding Club award to the club which best exemplified the high standards set by the Inter-Club Council. Lisa Torp, asS.B. Vice-President, presided over the I. C. C. and supervised the projects and activities of all school clubs. Stan Stearns, Dennis Randall, Mike Goodrich, Kathy VonHoene, Ross Harwood, Lisa Torp (President), Van Swarthout, Janet Arnold, Dennis Petrequin, Mike Solso, Dick Ludders. Lakers Abroad Seniors Mike Goodrich and Robyn Partridge both represented L.O.H.S. in foreign countries this year--Mike in Sweden and Robyn in Norway. Mike spent the summer in Sweden with the Stig Hakanson family and had two A.F.S. brothers. He lived 24 miles from Stockholm and enjoyed swimming, fishing, dancing, sightseeing, yachting and hiking. Mike also had the opportunity to speak over Radio Free Europe. Robyn stayed in Norway for not only the summer but also the first half of the school year. After several weeks, Robyn became a member of the Rosenberg family and enjoyed her four sisters very much. She attended a Norwegian school, where she took French, biology, Norsk language and Norsk history. Lakers are very proud of Robyn and Mike for the way they represented L.O.H.S. Helena poses with a good friend. Mo pauses by the anchor. A. F. S. brothers and sisters are Mike Solso, Adrian Dawson; Tom Young, Helena Idiart, Tammy Young; Mohammad Zareh, Dave Powers. Lakers Come From Many Lands This year L.O.H.S. was one of the very few schools (if not the only one) in the country to have three American Field Service students. Helena Idiart from Uruguay, South America, loves to play the piano and attends ball games with enthusiasm. Her quiet sincerity has won her many friends. Adrian Dawson has charmed the Lakers with his strong English accent, good speaking ability, and wonderful sense of humor. Mohammad Zareh, after arriving from Iran later than expected, adjusted easily to student life at L.O.H.S. Mo's friendly smile won him the honor of being Emperor of the annual Turnabout. Not only did L.O.H.S. host three A.F.S. students, but two other Lakers came from abroad--both sophomore girls. Sonia Steck from Panama came to spend the year in Lake Oswego as a sister of sophomore Yolanda Parker. With her sweet smile, Sonia has become well-liked by the Lakers. Cordula Diemer came back from Germany with an aunt and uncle to attend school in Lake Oswego. Her popularity is evident as her classmates chose her for their Miss Merry Christmas princess. Hosting these five foreign students was both a privilege and a very great opportunity for L.O. 's student body--an opportunity to share Laker hospitality and friendships and an opportunity to learn about foreign nations and peoples first-hand. Cordy is crowned princess. Sonia and Yoli enjoy a joke. Hail - - the Purple S White Lake Oswego High School has a well-deserved reputation for its tremendous school spirit. Lakers back their teams in all sports with unquenchable enthusiasm, regardless of whether they are far ahead or way behind; and they have fun doing it! Rally spurs rooters on. Bunch of hams, anyway! Can Drive Successful This year at Christmas time, Lakers collected a grand total of 20,000 cans of food for the Tri-City Rainbow Division another new record! In spite of a slow start and very bad weather during the closing days of the drive, L. O. 's student body managed to fulfill adviser Miss Murty's highest expectations. The Junior class won the can competition hand hands down with 8,000 cans, so their class princess, Kay Koeing, was crowned Miss Merry Christmas. The senior and sophomore classes, second and thrid respectively, made a close finish with approximately 6,000 cans each. Everyone helps. Craig counts. Sophs work hard. Chairman presents food to Oswego police. Senior Class President Tim Minor crowns Kay, Miss Merry Christinas of 1961. Moonlight and Mistletoe Miss Merry Christmas, Kay Koenig, and Princesses Patsy Brown and Cordula Diemer ruled over this year's Christmas formal, Moonlight and Mistletoe. Members of Girl's League, under the direction of Chairman Janie Jensen, transformed L.O. 's cafetorium into a winter wonderland” with trees, evergreen, a moon, and silhouetted animals for the occasion, which served as a gala climax for several weeks of canned food collecting. Senior Class President Tim Minor M.C. 'd the dance with the assistance of a 1961 alum, Joe Potter. The two of them traded jokes and led the crowd in singing Christmas carols. Patsy Ray Pardo Kay Bill Lesh Cordy Bill Cornett What would we do without him! A lovely Christmas court: Patsy Brown, senior; Kay Koenig, junior Cordula Diemer, sophomore. Gathered around the piano are the Senior Class officers: President Tim Minor, Vice-President Ken Dale, Project Manager Penny West, Secretary Sue Flowers, and Treasurer John Larson. Seniors Enjoy 3rd Year Status The class of '62 was the first graduating class to have completed three years at the Junior High School and three years at L. O. H. S. They broke the precedent of previous years as their graduation ceremonies were held in the new gymnasium rather than at a larger high school. The Lakers of '62 will look back on their high school careers remembering intramural trophy victories, winning the canned food and papers drives their junior year, hosting three A. F.S. students, the Senior Class dinner, Almuerzo de Chili,” and many more memorable experiences that will remain with them forever. Counselor MRS. CHURCHILL 30 Adviser MR. LIESKE Adviser MRS. One of its major concerns is planning continuously for the expansion of school plant facilities in order to keep pace with rapid school population growth. The completion of L.O.H.S.'s additions and those to Palisades and the junior high, a new grade school, and a new administration building, marked the culmination of the second phase of a long range building program recommended by the Citizens' Advisory Committee in the spring of 1959. In addition to caring for school facility and curriculum programs, the Board is constantly seeking ways to implement its property-tax supported programs at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayers. A distinctive feature of district operation is the Board policy of involving local citizens as representatives of community groups in planning and developing school district programs. As students at L.O.H.S. and citizens of Lake Oswego, the student body is sincerely grateful for the time and effort that these men, elected for five year terms without pay, spend on the Board of Directors. At left: Mr. Virgil Solso. Below: Superintendent of Schools Mr. Lawrence Fish, Mr. Hull Dolson, Chairman Mr. Clifford Powers, Mr. John Peterson, Dr. Richard O'Shea. District Administrators As Superintendent of Lake Oswego's seven public schools, Mr. Fish works directly under the school board. His job is a many-faceted one, including budget planning and development, supervision of certificated personnel, and development of the district as well as general administrative and control duties. Mr. Perkins, Assistant Superintendent, counts among his duties the supervision of elementary curriculum, purchasing, non-certificated personnel, buildings, grounds, transportation, cafeteria, and budget control . Mr. Becker, Guidance Director, supervises the district's testing and guidance programs, individual testing, research and evaluation, and special education program. L.O. has long enjoyed a reputation as a tough academic school that offers each student challenging learning opportunities, but actually it offers even more than that. Dramatics, music, journalism, club work and school service groups are open for anyone to take advantage of, and Lakers did so with a vengeance in 61 -62. The drama department presented five full-length productions, the music department’s five groups performed for school, extracurricular, and civic functions, LAKE VIEWS put out its biweekly issues as regularly as clockwork, and club offerings ranged from foreign language study to ski trips. Another aspect of Laker life was strictly social--the dances. In all categories, whether after-game, formal, or hillbilly style, Laker dances hit new peaks of originality and fun. 86 Birdie Kling in Apollo. Eve of One-Acts The drama department's first production of the year was an evening of one-act plays presented on October 20. Sorry, Wrong Number, Apollo Of Bellac, and Egad! What a Cad!” were featured in this production, the first to be held in the new cafe-torium. Outstanding acting, lighting effects, and costuming combined to make the Eve of One-Acts a real success. Egad! What a Cad! Sorry, Wrong Number — a murder-mystery thriller. Music Department Shows Versatility L.O.'s music department, founded, nurtured and promoted by Mr. Duane Olanie, took on added depth this year with the establishment of a musicians lettermen's club, the Quartermasters. This talented group sparked new interest in music throughout L.O. as it aided in hosting the TYV band jamboree and promoted all the department's projects and performances. There are five, highly specialized performing groups within the department: the choir, orchestra, band, dance band, and pep band. The choir, composed only of second year or auditioned students, performed at the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies. The band and orchestra each met for one class period a day to study the techniques of musicianship. An upper-class, strictly male group, the dance band, played at the Dinner Dance and at several civic functions throughout the year. And L.O.H.S. 's pep band? Well, it followed the old postman’s tradition and came through snow, sleet, and interminable rain to liven up football and basketball games, and pep assemblies, too, all year long. MR. They pursued their goal with an ambitious club work program, entertaining speakers from the Oregon Education Association as well as from L.O. H. S. and traveling to Oregon College of Education. Though the club did not share in any formal practice-teaching programs this year, its members fulfilled their avowed purposes as they learned about the opportunities and responsibilities of the teaching profession. Each of the three groups aimed at increasing its members' knowledge of the respective language and customs it represents. La Luz made extensive use of speakers and slides from the A.H.A. tour to Mexico to help its members gain understanding of the Mexican people and their language. It sponsored the second annual Handsome Jose contest and dance in order to raise money for a scholarship to send a student to Mexico on the A.H.A. tour. French Club made use of speakers, too--French exchange students from the surrounding area--as well as celebrating its annual seven-course dinner and a Christmas party. Intermission entertainment featured a Civil Air Patrol drill team as well as German songs by the German club. Proceeds from the dance went to the West German Refugee Fund. A Jamboree Victory Screams and pandemonium broke loose from the Laker section as the third-place winner in T. Y.V. rally competition was announced. It was another first for the Lakers in '61-'62 and well-deserved recognition for a hard working rally. The Laker squad showed its originality with A-rah and ooie-ooie. 188 enthusiastic Laker rooters traveled to McMinnville by bus to participate in the Jamboree. Spirit wins! Waiting for our turn. Tension rises for the Lakers. The Rally leads a yell. Come on Lakers------ Let's hear ya! Interest High In Past and Present Student interest soared to an all time high this year in three noteworthy clubs: the American Heritage Club, the International Relations League, and the American Field Service Club. American Heritage, with its emphasis on America’s foundations and development, focused on the past, while I. R. L. and the A. F.S. Club centered their attentions on world problems today and practical means of improving tense international situations. The American Heritage Club, a separate organization apart from the American Heritage Association, attempted to aid its members in attaining a better understanding of the heritage of our country. It was instrumental in arranging a local civil defense forum and a forum for prospective members of 1962 A.H.A. tour groups, and it also sponsored the annual Turnabout dance. The A. F.S. Club was chartered as a club for the first time this year, having in the past been a student body committee. It worked in close conjunction with the local representatives of the international A. F.S. program, cooperating with the adult committee in raising money, selecting L.O. juniors for exchange programs, and helping foreign students adjust to our school and community. I. R. L., under the leadership of junior Van Swarthout, has focused student attention on international relations with panels on disarmament and other world problems as well as with a variety of speakers from many countries. It also sponsored several students in a trip to the Model United Nations held annually in Eugene. In all, over 2500 people saw the play which had a cast of fifty-one and was accompanied by a thirty-five piece orchestra. Theater critics and drama teachers alike acclaimed the play for its superior acting, staging, costuming, and choreography. Lists of members with the courses each was prepared to teach were circulated among the teachers. They referred students who wanted additional help with a subject to the listed members who devoted a good deal of spare time to helping them. Qualifications for Omega membership are high--a 3. 5 GPA for two consecutive quarters plus a good record in leadership, citizenship, and service. However, membership is well worth the effort as it serves as well-deserved recognition of these qualities. Denny Randall helps John Turchi learn to use a slide rule. To promote a feeling of true friendship among all girls, to develop a spirit of service, to train both leaders and followers, and to prepare each girl to solve issues that she may be called upon to face in later life, are the true purposes of Girls’ League. Being a service club, Girls' League promotes several activities throughout the school year. Some of these include the Father-Daughter Dinner and the Mother-Daughter Tea and sponsorship of the annual Christmas formal. Haystack Hop The craziest dance of the year was a big success at L.O. as Lakers kicked up their heels at the annual Haystack Hop. Sponsored by the Midshipmen, this year's Hop featured many new innovations as well as all the traditional activities. The logsawing and beard-growing competitions went off as scheduled with John Larson producing the grubbiest chin piece, Ross Harwood the best-groomed, and Roland Hitchrick the longest. The pie-eating contest turned to choas when the eager contestants rebelled and started throwing their pies instead of eating them Mock marriages and a costume contest were other attractions for Laker hicks at '62's memorable Haystack Hop. A few dartin' hillbilly girls! More twisting Lumberjacking practice Bill Bowling and Stan Stearns run to their posts as the fire siren rings. Fire Squad Energetic Would you like to have the opportunity to run down the halls of L.O.H.S. at full speed without fear of retribution from the administration or faculty? Then you had better apply for a position on L. O. 's fire squad. Each member of this year's squad, comprised of 42 boys and 9 girls, had his own post, either as a hoseman or a fireman. At the first sound of the fire siren, they sprang from their desks and ran pell-mell to their appointed positions--collisions were frequent and violent! Each fireman had the charge of several rooms in which he closed the windows, turned off the lights, shooed out the people, and closed the door. Each hoseman was charged with readying his firehose for possible action during drills. The drills were planned and co-ordinated by Fire Chief Bob Rosso and his assistant, Steve Crittenden, with the co-operation of the battalion chiefs and their assistants. 's skiers took to the slopes with the first snowfall this autumn, and Ski Club went into action right along with them. In its second year as a chartered club, it really outdid itself in fulfilling its purpose: To further interest throughout the student body of Lake Oswego High School in the winter sport of snow skiing. Ski clubbers traveled to Bachelor Butte and Mt. Hood on chartered buses in pursuit of the bright, white stuff. They enjoyed many special benefits, too: ski movies and group rates on ski lessons. As a member of the Inter-Club-Council, Ski Club helped in many ways to enrich L.O. 's club program. A central goal of the Ski Club is to make skiing a major sport in which a letter can be earned. Lakers’ Log ’62 Under constant pressure from the student body to produce a bigger and better yearbook, this year's annual staff went out on a limb in all phases of production. The biggest obstacle, money, was surmounted with a fifty-cent hike in the book price and the advent of advertising. These two factors combined to raise the total budget for this year to over $4,000, an increase of almost $1,200 over last year’s. The entire format of the book was revamped in accordance with the current trend toward magazine style in yearbooks. This restyling was made possible by an increase in page allotment to a total of 168 pages. As a strictly extracurricular activity with no grade incentives for staff members and no class time for work, compiling the LOG was a mountainous task squarely centered on the section editors. Under the inspired direction of editor Kay Fenning, this hard working crew strove to meet the deadlines set by this year's publishers, Mirro-Graphic Yearbook in Glendale, California. LAKERS' LOG editor, Kay Fenning, confers with Barb Bunnel, senior section editor Standard practice ? Not really. Staff members fake trepidation in the face of their editor's wrath. A New Look in after-game dances After-games dances took on a new look this year as sponsoring organizations tried to outdo one another in thinking up new gimmicks. Door prizes, disk jockeys, stereo music, and dance contests were all features of one or another of this year's dances. Doing the Twist and the Slop was a great Laker pastime and the Limbo and Bristol Stomp added their new looks too. In their Homecoming clash, the Lakers took on Forest Grove and won 20 to 6. This was the first time in the history of the school that the Lakers have won their Homecoming Game. Taking full advantage of their last chance of the year, the Lakers defeated Oregon City by a score of 15 to 14. This game was a real thriller. Wen Schollander was voted to First Team Shrine, First Team All-League, and First Team All-County. He also received the Lavacheck Award and was a National Football Foundation Hall of Fame candidate. The Lakers were held scoreless in two games but gave a good account of themselves in most of the others. This was the first year with the J.V. squad for coaches Petros and Lansing. While the J.V.'s totaled 112 points for the season, their opponents earned 159. This gives an average score per game of 12. 4 to 17. 7. The win was the first of the season and an occasion for wild rejoicing among the rally, student body, court, and most of all, the football team. Dr. Barnum records the Laker victory. Ringing the victory bell. A winning score. A jubilant team carries coach Dulcich from the field. Queen Pam I takes a rest. ’61-derful Queen Pam Wales reigned over the 1961 Homecoming festivities which included a watery Thursday night pep rally and bonfire, car caravan, pre-game alumni tea, victorious game, and Homecoming dance, ’61-derful. Senior Princess Kay Fenning, Junior Princesses Burmah McLawhorn and Gretchen Miller, and Sophomore Princesses Margie Schwabe and Yoli Parker completed the court. '61-derful was decorated on a four seasons theme and definitely lived up to its name. Watch your step. Looks like fun rally. Always loyal to her. Everybody dance! What was that John! Up Lakers! Yea team! VARSITY RALLY: Chase Osborne, Tammy Young, Bobbie Foster, Suzanne Carson, Pete Richter, Susan Erbes, Gayle Frey, Timmy Palmer and Denny Walling. Rally-Catalyst to Spirit This year's varsity rally squad promoted a feeling of unity, spirit, and pride throughout the student body unequaled in previous years. The hardworking, imaginative group brought home the third place trophy from the T. Y. V. Jamboree and represented L.O. well wherever they went. The J.V. rally yelled at junior varsity football and basketball games and occasionally participated in pep assemblies. J.V. Cross Country Under the direction of their new coach, Norm Trotter, Lake Oswego's cross country teams completed successful seasons. The varsity started with two close losses. They lost to David Douglas by one point in a four-way meet on their home course, and in a five-way meet, finished second to Hillsboro. Later they won two three-way meets by wide margins. After a fine second in the North Marion Invitational, they won the TYV District Meet. They took twelfth in the state meet at Salem and fourth in the state AAU meet. The J.V. team compiled a fine record of five firsts and two seconds, including firsts in the District and North Marion runs. Girls’ Swimming The Mermaids started off the season by dunking the McMinnville swimmers. With this victory and those to follow as impetus, they succeeded in breaking all previous records set by Lake Oswego. Despite the fact that Lake Oswego has no pool, they managed to take seventh place in the state meet. Captain Cynthia Jessell successfully defended her third place in the 100-yard Butterfly. Mary Dee Jessell placed sixth in the 50-yard Freestyle, and Nancy Carson took third in the 100-yard Freestyle. Basketball The varsity team had only two returning lettermen to build around, so consequently had to settle for a rebuilding year. As the season progressed, the team gave a better account of itself and played good ball in many games. The record is not a true indication of the team's showing. A height problem, as well as inexperience, was hard to overcome. However, the players hustled for the most part and showed up well in the offensive portion. Jack Serven, with 202 points was high scorer for the season. He averaged 9.2 points per game. Next in line was Stan Stearns with 144 points. Our returning ball players are looking forward to a good season in 1962-63. Excellent team spirit and discipline was demonstrated during the second half of the season when the Lakers walloped their previous conquerors, McMinnville. Leading scorer for the season was sophomore Jack Munro, closely followed by sophomore Eric Young. The team's strongest rebounder was junior Steve Crittenden.
