LAKERS’ LOG VOLUME X 1961 EDITION LAKE OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL LAKE OSWEGO, OREGON CONTENTS FOREWORD DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES ORGANIZATIONS AND CLUBS ACTIVITIES SPORTS INDEX LAKE OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL FOREWORD Lake Oswego High School marks the end of a decade midst the mammoths of the mechanical age. They push and shove, changing the landscape to make way for the future. The dream of yesterday is nearing the reality of today. Through the maze of machinery, we glimpse the scaffolding and framework that will be new classrooms, science laboratories, the language laboratory, gymnasium, cafe -torium, and library. Noise and confusion. Squeaking cranes and rumbling trucks. The excited clatter of the jack-hammer. Tremors that shake the building. Rain and mud, everywhere seas of mud. 1960-61 has been a hectic and happy year--always wonderful. MUD + MACHINES = MODERNIZATION. 4 DEDICATION In his ten memorable years of service at LOHS, Mr. Roy Hadley, science teacher par excellence, has been held in the highest esteem by administrators, fellow teachers, and students. A warm and genial personality, a keen intellect, and an innate talent for teaching are combined superbly in this charter member ofLO's faculty. The air in his classroom is so charged with enth usi as m and interest that would-be scientists find themselves putting forth their utmost ability to learn. Mr. Hadley teaches us to think, is a comment frequently made by them. However, his approach is not strictly academic. Loud laughter often emanates from the lab as an experiment goes amiss or the instructor injects some bit of humor into the proceedings. Lakers who have graduated from his instruction find themselves well equipped for college in the area of science, and they are deeply appreciative of the stimulating experience they have enjoyed. To express this appreciation, the yearbook staff, with sincere pleasure, dedicates this 1961 Lakers’ Log to Mr. Roy Hadley. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY MR. LAWRENCE FISH Superintendent MR. LAURENCE PERKINS Assistant Superintendent MR. GERALD BECKER Testing and Guidance Instructor MR. JOHN SANDBERG Coordinator of Curriculum 8 Superintendent of Schools Mr. Lawrence Fish, Chairman Mr. John Peterson, Mr. Hull Dolson, Mr. Clifford Powers. Mr. Virgil Solso, Dr. Richard O'Shea. BOARD OF DIRECTORS The School Board is probably the most important organization that stands behind our school. It is responsible for the policies that are carried out not only in the high school, but also in the grade schools and junior high school. The School Board is the organization which delegates what our administration does. Each member of the Board serves five years as a community service. A prime interest of the School Board now is the construction of more buildings at LOHS, which will provide for the great number of students that we have now and those who will be com ingin the next few years. Special thanks go to these men who have given their time to make our education more complete PTA The P. T. A. headed by President Robert Oslund works with the parents by grade level. By this means, the specific problems and achievements of that particular grade level can be discussed. One of the main meetings featured this year was Back to School Night when all the parents had a chance to meet the teachers and to discuss the school program. LAKERS’ DADS CLUB In the educational field, the Lakers' Dads Club sponsors the Scholarship Dance. The money obtained from this dance is used for scholarships received by LOHS seniors. The Dads Club, this year led by President Stanley Stearns, also helps out the athletic department both by their interest in our sports events and by their financial support. 9 MR. OWEN W. PRICE Mr. Price, our principal, has one main goal: to see the students of our high school become the best prepared and most qualified people they can possibly be. This is Mr. Price’s third year at Lake Oswego. He is known and respected for his genuine interest in the students of this high school. MR. Among the many activities of their sophomore year, winning the May-Fete was the most outstanding. These Lakers started their junior year by planting rhododendrons. Hard work was the secret to their winning the Canned Food Drive, the Paper Drive, May-Fete, and the Best Class Award. Highlight of their senior year was the annual spaghetti dinner, the most successful in the history of the school. They were also privileged to be the only class in Oregon to have three A. F. S. students visiting them. Talented as individuals and displaying unusual originality, members of the Senior class have worked closely and harmoniously in the group projects they have undertaken. As they take up their anchors and set sails for new shores, L. O.'s 1961 graduates will always treasure their memories of Lake Oswego High School. 18 AFS Lake Oswego was proud to receive its delightful American Field Service exchange student, Myriam Correa from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With her warm personality and ability to make friends easily, she immediately took her place among the Lakers' crew. Myriam participated in many clubs, activities, and attended all Laker games enthusiastically. It is with regret the senior class bids Myriam Hasta la vista, hoping to soon meet again. Annick Bachet, American Field Service exchange student from France was one of three students attending Lake Oswego. She was able to adapt herself readily to the life of an American school girl. She participated in after school activities, student government, and Laker games. Her friendliness was rewarded during the Christmas season when she was elected a Miss Merry Christmas Princess. She will always be remembered by the students at Lake Oswego because of her friendliness and cooperation with her fellow students. A new addition to the Lake Oswego student body last fall was Michael Marx, American Field Service exchange student from Bramsche, Germany. Mike participated in many activities some of which were clubs, assemblies, and sports, where he made his varsity letter in football. The students showed their admiration for Mike when they elected him as a prince of Emerald Isle. Mike, with his intriguing personality and good sense of humor will long be remembered at Lake Oswego. 19 Peggy Abramson Senate 2; Girls' League 1, 3; French Club 2, 3, 4; IRL 3; Swimming 1,2,3,4; Intramurals 1,2,3,4. In the game with Tillamook, following five straight losses, Oswego won by a score of 20 to 7. The Lakers rolled up 124 yards on the ground plus 62 more through the air for a total offense of 186 yards while holding Tillamook to 69 on the ground and minus one in the air for a 68 yard total. Individual performances were often outstanding. This feat came on the heels of a successful season of seven dual meet victories and one loss to Beaverton to whom they lost again in the District Meet and tied in the State Meet. Although the Lakers tied Beaverton for the title, it was evident that the Oswego Mermen had the superior swimmers as they won it with only five men, the smallest number of participants to win a state title. Senior Gretchen Heideman and Sophomore Nancy Betty showed in the state tourney by placing second at the end of the first round. The Lakers were second to Wilson in state. Captain Mike Dennis TRACK Led by captain and most valuable performer, Mike Dennis, the 1961 cinder team finished eighth in the league meet. Although cut short of man power by some disciplinary action on several top performers, the Lakers made do with what they had and finished their regular dual meet season with two impressive victories over Tigard and eventual sub-district champ Oregon City. All through the year several men made themselves known. The Laker threesome of Jim Benham, Larry Brainard, and Paul Davisson in the mile; and Mike Dennis, Ed Jacobson, and Rick Harper in the half were a pleasure to watch as they almost invariably swept their events. Other standouts included all-purpose man John MacLean in the weight events and the broad jump; Robin Stackhouse in the javelin; Bill Davisson in the pole vault; Murray Elkins in the quarter; and freshman Jeff Nichols in the sprints. Mike Dennis was the only Laker to represent the school at the state meet as he finished second in the district half. In Mike's last four races he continually lowered his time and by the end of the season had cut seven seconds off his time. He set a school 660 record this year. 118 MacLean throws discus Davisson vaults Elkins runs 440 Coach Bowles State Representative Dennis RECORD LO .52 Dallas 70 LO .45 West Linn . . . 77 LO .54 St. Helens. . . 68 LO . 85 Tigard 36 LO .75 Oregon City . . 46 Laker Relays . Some early season wins over Tigard and McMinnville, in which the Lakers clobbered the Grizzlies 25-0, got the team off to a good start. Then the monsoon season hit and, with it, discontinued practice and diamond trouble. At the end of the season the Lakers had rung up a record of 4 wins, 11 losses, and 1 tie overall; and 2 wins and 4 losses in league play, good enough for fourth place in the Eastern Division of the TYV league. A few individuals and one game in particular made the season somewhat successful. Junior Roger Hutson was rated as All-Eastern Division TYV league 3rd baseman, while co-captains Bob Bamum and Rodger Dwight along with Rod Young and Lee Helstrom made second team and honorable mention. The one game which really capped the season was the final game against eventual league champ Oregon City. In it the Lakers showed the kind of ball they were capable of playing and rapped the Pioneers to give them their only league defeat. BASEBALL Led by Coach Kremer, the 1961 J. V. squad had an encouraging season. Winning most of their ball games, they showed great promise. The Varsity team can look forward to a strong season with top players next year. The team had a strong pitching staff with Frank Lawhead, Phil Kelleher, and Les Fahey hurling them in. Lawhead showed up especially well in his second game, striking out nineteen opponents. Mike Ager, catching for the Lakers, also shows much promise for next year. Steve Crittenden, the J. V. third baseman, holding over a . 300 batting average, shows great possibility and will see action next year. Mike Miles should be mentioned as the coaches could not decide whether he was Varsity material this year, playing both. ROW 1: Knauss, Lisbakken, Ager, Rilette, Fahey, Kilpatrick. Captain Gary Starr BOYS’ TENNIS Led by seniors Bruce Metzger, Gary Starr, and Mike Marx, the 1961 version of the boys' tennis team really showed its stuff. With these three boys (Bruce in singles and Mike and Gary in doubles) gathering points, the Laker net men fought to a second place in the state tennis tournament. Bruce made it all the way to the finals while Mike and Gary were elimin-ated in the quarter finals. Other sterling play by Don Brecht, Pete Richter, Jim Patchet, and Chip Ormsby enabled the Lakers' record to send their outstanding performers to the state matches. Altogether the Lakers compiled a 7-5 record and turned in one of the finest years at Lake Oswego in the net sport. In the state tournament the Laker net-maids were led by Cheryl Shuler in singles who advanced to the quarter-finals and Edie Dunn and Jeannine Browning in doubles who fought to the semi-finals before being defeated. Helping to complete their successful season were Linda Peterson, team captain; Judy Cripe. Gayle Frey, Tammy Young, Kathy Lynch, Shirley Haftorson, and Janet Robertson. BURKE There are many things we'd like to say that words cannot express There are many things we'd like to do, yet cannot meet the test There are many things within us which never will depart And much of this is the love for Bob that's deep within our hearts. He always stood for the little guy; he always wore a smile He never caused a broken heart for he was loving all the while And this is how we all should live--each and every day And this is why Bob isn't gone--he only is away. He's just around the corner in a kinder world than ours Where he has many things to do amidst the higher powers. So let us be thankful for knowing Bob and miss him as we may But let us never, never forget that he's not gone, he's just away. The Lakers' Log staff gratefully acknowledges the assistance and cooperation of Mr. Stan Curtin, the Lake Osweg Review, Lake Views, Mr. William Stocking, faculty, and students in publishing this annual. 124 INDEX Abramson, Peggy .....................................................20,67,111 Adams, Mark ................................................................57 Ager, Mike
