In modern times, however, it is regarded as no great journey but a relatively common event. . SOME OF US MAY MAKE THE FABLED TRIP Around the World during our lifetime, most of us will not. But as each day goes by, each and every one of us takes a trip around a world - our own world that We know so well. OUR PRIVATE WORLDS ARE AS VARIED AS WE ARE, no two exactly alike. And yet, they all have one thing in common. For a period of time, Lake Oswego high school, its faculty and its student body, has influenced our existance. WHEREVER WE FIND OURSELVES IN YEARS TO COME, whatever we may do, L.O.H.S. will have played a part in our achievements. All of us will be bound together by the invisible ties of our high school. Mr. Charles Bowles DURING THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR Mr. Charles Bowles has served Lake Oswego high school as a chemistry and algebra teach- er, a cross country and track team coach, and as a senior and junior class counselor. THE TIRELESS DEDICATION OF MR. BOWLES to our high school can be seen daily in his teaching and coaching but it was most clearly exemplified in his work on the new football and track field. Mr. Bowles devoted many of his summer hours-totaling more than three hundred-so that the entire Oswego community and the students of Lake Oswego would have a field of which they could be proud, and so that the Lake Oswego athletes would have better conditions for practice and play. IT IS WITH GREAT PRIDE AND ADMIRATION that the 1958 Lakers' Log -staff dedicates this annual to Mr. Charles Bowles- instructor, coach, counselor, and friend. Dedication They Administer our School District Mr. Lawrence D. Fish, Superintendent IN 1958 THE LAKE OSWEGO SCHOOL BOARD has been very busy with the many and divers problems which face a growing school district. Under the very capable leadership of Dr. George Lyman, the School Board has done an excellent job in solving or alleviating these problems. ONE OF THE BIGGEST ANNUAL JOBS of the School Board is the formation of district's policy and the construction of a workable budget for the year. Working with a specially formed citizens' committee, the board planned the expansion pro- gram for the area through 1960. Immediate plans call for the building of an elementary school in the Palisades area, the completion of Lake Oswego junior high school, and the addition of expanded shop facilities to the high school. Board of Directors Mr. Lawrence Perkins, Asst. Superintendent MR. LAWRENCE D. FISH is an man with a great deal of experience qualifying him-for his appoint- ment as Superintendentthis past year. His previ- ous experience in the Oswego school system con- sisted of being Director of Curriculum since 1955. He received his Bachelor's Degree at Bethany Peniel College, and his Master's Degree at UCLA. He is now working for his Ph.D. at Washington State College. He is present at all School Board meetings and attends to the multitude of details that are essential for the functioning of a rapidly growing school district such as ours. MR. LAWRENCE PERKINS, formerly the popu- lar principal of Lake Grove elementary school, now offers his assistance in carrying out the re- sponsibilities placed before Mr. Fish. Mr. Perkins graduated from the Eastern Washington College of Education and received his Master's Degree from the Oregon College of Education. Left to right: Mr. Lawrence Fish, Mr. Fred Torp, Dr. George Lyman, President, Mr. John Emery, Mr. John Peterson. ADAMS, THE FACULTY, AND THE PAR- ENTS feel that this year has been an extremely successful one for the P.T.A. The annual Back to School Night, was one of the highlights of the P.T.A.'s activities. During the year the many excellent class conferences helped to clear up some of the questions in the minds of the parents. Mr. Alford and the members of the executive board played a great role in making the 1957-58 year for the P.T.A. the best that has been known. THIS YEAR, AS OFTEN IN THE PAST, the Dads' club at Lake Oswego high school greatly benefited the school and community. The annual Scholar- ship Dance in December, a major Dads' club project, succeeded with a record turnout. The profits of this dance will be given in the form of scholarships to individual seniors in recogni- tion of their achievement in high school. HOWEVER, THE GREATEST PROJECT under- taken by the Dads' Club was the rebuilding of the football and track facilities. The new football and track field was made possible from the time, money and effort donated by the Dads' club and the community. Dads' Club Mr. Vincent Stageberg, Secretary, Mr. Bob Porter, Vice President, Mr. Jay Greene, President, Mr. Everett Sundholrn, Treasurer mm 173153 ROME Rxo me oANeRso BHEELB c.,,, agen Ns VA V 951 X . ,Xa A 1 ,f 'M I ,Q ,,,,. 13 W W A . ,.,L,,...,.m..N, Facult and Y, Administration l Um' Przncigbal Mr. Warren Adams MR. ADAMS, A GRADUATE OF BOTH NEBRASKA STATE COLLEGE with aBachelorof Arts degree and the University of Oregon with a Master's degree, came into the Oswego school system from Molalla, Oregon in the late summer of 1957. In addition to performing the routine duties facing any administrator, paperwork, guiding his staff, etc., Mr. Adams participates as an active member of the Citizens' Advisory Committee on Curriculum as well as of many professional groups working on curriculum. WITH THIS BACKGROUND MR. ADAMS is able to assist in the planning of a well balanced academic program which meets the demands and the abilities of each individual student as Well as the needs of the community. As evidence of his wish to improve Lake Oswego high school was Mr. Adams' effort and influence which aided in obtaining the shop addition. MR. ADAMS IS VERY WILLING TO ASSIST the faculty and the students in initiating activities which will enrich school life. He has no patience with the lazy mind Although he might wish that it were not necessary, it occasionally becomes mandatory that he be a stern disciplinarian. He wants to be a friend and a counselor to the students, but he will not seek out a studentg the student must find him. Administrative Assistants MR. JAMES BROAD IS KNOWN AND RESPECTED at Lake Oswego high school for many reasons. He is the vice-principal of Lake Oswego, is an algebra teacher, is director of the attendance program. and at- tends to most disciplinary problems. Mr. Broad is a hardworking administrator, with a keen sense of the student opinion and an excellent sense of humor which aids him greatly in his relations with the L.O.H.S. student body. MR. DICK PIZZO, DIRECTOR OF STU- DENT AFFAIRS, teacher of general mathe- matics, coach of the swimming team, and advisor of the Student Body Cabinet and the Student Senate had a multitude of new achievements in 1958. Due to Mr. Pizzo's direct interest in the school and students, he is often called upon for help in planning a certain activity or overcoming a problem. He has seen the successful introduction of a revised club program into the school's gov- ernment. He was the proud coach of the boys' swimming team when it won the State Swimming Championship-the first in Lake Oswego high school's history. Without the able guidance of Mr. Pizzo, many student activities, such as the senior class dinner, would not have attained their great success. AS IN PAST YEARS, MISS FRANCES BARBEY was again the counselor to the senior class but this year she added to her duties by being a counselor to part of the junior class. In the course of her general work as a counselor she has occasion to help many students, from freshmen to seniors, in planning their curriculum, in finding a job for the summer or weekends, in choosing the right college, and in directing the students toward possible careers. This year also found Miss Barbey teaching two psychology classes as well as becoming settled in her new home. All of these contribute to making Miss Bar- bey's life a very busy one. Following this, in answer to the challenge of the junior class, the seniors whole- heartedly participated in the clean-up campaign. In a pep assembly, they presented a skit concerned with promoting school spirit. Although the class was involved in graduation preparations .later in the year, they still con- tinued their activities such as the May Fete and the annual senior Skip Day. As in the past years they presented the school with a much appre- ciated gift. The college bound student enjoys the particulars of the sciences -biology, chemistry, physics, and advanced mathematics. Everyone benefits from the lessons in social and informal dance given in the physical education classes. AT LAKE OSWEGO it is believed that students learn as. much or more from group discussions as from direct teacher instruction, consequently there are inter- spersed among the classes occasional class discussions. In some areas of study it is possible even for students to do the teaching In this manner their skills are more fully developed and they gain a greater appreciation of the role of their teachers. A Victorian setting was used to convert the stage into a home of the early twentieth century. AS THE PLAY OPENED the two aunts were trying to get rid of another one of their arsenic victims. Though the wins were few and far between, the Laker gridmen gave everything they had in every game of a rough, tough season. Hampered. seriously by injuries, the Lakers, coached by Cliff Giffin, finished their season with two victories and six defeats. A PROMISING QUARTERBACK showed himself in sophomore Bill Flowers. Bill is a quick, agile athlete and is likely to play a lot of good football in future years. Senior Pete Papulski also played quarterback and was outstanding as a defensive quarterback. Though the Lakers were a light team they possessed a lot of backfield speed. Halfbacks Dave James and Tom Betty proved themselves to be constant break-away threats to their opponents. Sophomores Denny Carlson and Ron Simonson also light, fast backs showed well. JUNIOR BILL BARNUM gave LO rooters many thrills with his spectacular pass interceptions. Two outstand- ing, hard running fullbacks were George McCarthy and Curt Von Mueller. Curt was named all TYV league fullback. Laker kickers possessed fairly talented toes with Tom Smythe and Jay Green booting seven out of twelve p.a.t.'s. Outstanding 1inemen.were: centers, John Ankersmit and Bill Grimm, tackles, Tom Davis and Gerald DeChaineg guards, Steve Altick and Ed Robinsong and ends, Larry Cheney and Bill Barnum. TWO BRIGHT SPOTS in an otherwise dark season were the victories over Molalla and St. Helens. After trailing Molalla 6 to 0 at the half, the Laker gridmen came back strong in the second half to trounce the Indians 14 to 6. The illusive running of halfback Tom Betty led the way for LO. When the Laker team jour- neyed to St. Helens they were given little chance of winning. Victories over Lion teams have always been rare in the past, but the LO gridders really played and came home with a 14 to 0 triumph. A fast moving back- field led by Curt Von Mueller and a hard charging line led by Tom Davis carried Lake Oswego to the well deserved victory. Dave, who was one of the top high school tennis players in the South, proved to be a really valuable asset to the team. DAVE, FOLLOWED BY PETE PAPULSKI and Arnold Southwell, were the top three for the Laker racketeers. Top doubles combination for the team was composed of Mike Moreland and Hartwell Whitney. Coached by Miss Doris Popple, the Laker girls proved to be very tough to beat. Leading shotmakers for the Lakers were Jean Adams and Wendy Southwell. THE TEAM MEMBERS FAILED TO LOSE a single match to their first three opponents in spite of extremely disagreeable early season weather for practicing. Hopes are high for next year since both Jean and Wendy are juniors and will be back next year. Girls' Tennis Judy rrey 104 AFTER OVERWHELMIN G all regular season opposition, the Laker mermen climaxed their tremendous record by cap- turing the evasive state crown. There are probably few athletic teams anywhere that can equal the fantastic consecutive win streak the LO splashers have racked up. Under the able instruction of coach Dick Pizzo, Lake Oswego boys' swim teams have yet to taste defeat in dual meet competi- tion. This year the Lakers extended their string of triumphs to 52 in a row. Voted as the team's outstanding swimmer was senior Doug Chisolm. Senior Loren Bunnell, a transfer from Franklin, was a big help to the team. Moving up from last year's .IV championship squad were Bill Barnum, LaVerne Lawhead, Dave Durham, John Ankersmit, Jay Blydenstein, and John Andrews. THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN a little green and inexperienced for Varsity competition, but they worked harder than any team I've ever coached, said Coach Don Kieling.
