All of the hurry and bustle of the crowds, the balloon man selling his wares, the livestock exposition, with its blue ribbon winners, and the barker luring people into the sideshows. But have you ever thought how a state fair compares to a high school year? Ygur 1955 Lakers' Log laograjs classes, faculty, fclubs, sports and activiges by slr s so ' e ' ' ' T ' The crowvdsof st'1Td?Ets'iTrl16l'TEl'ls eager to get to their classes, are like the throngs in the midway. The awards that are presented to deserving students are like blue ribbons given by the judges at the fair. All the hard work, the joy and lun, the spirit of competition and the thrill of achievement that characterize a state fair are a part of this school year. These are the things we will remember always. IS fi fi N 4-'E -Q, DEDICATION To the seniors of the class of 1955 this fourth edition of The Lakers Log is dedicated The first class to have attended Lake Oswego High School from the ninth grade throughout the 12th it is the schools first class of true Lakers No past experiences ir other high schools have divided the loyalties and diminished the spirit of this class. lts morale has been excellent. For this reason We have chosen the symbol of the pure-bred horse, a blue-ribbon win- ner, to represent our '55 graduates. The name, Golden Daze has been bestowed on this fine equine specimen to signify the nostalgia that invariably accompanies memories of high school and especially memories ot this year, 1955, DISTRICT 7 SCHOOL BOARD f Left to Smxth u-'inet I ll! No matter how busy, they'll always lend a sympathetic ear whenever a student seeks help in personal or co-curricular mat- ters, and they invariably come forth with a wise and logical solu- tion. Besides directing girls' affairs, Miss Lum teaches English and physiology, a new course, and coaches girls' swimming, as well as boys' tennis. Mr. Pizza is the coach ot the boys' swimming team in addition to being supervisor ot co-curricular affairs and teacher of math and science. .gtk A ,urQ,, ..-I' .A X Mr. Dick Pizzo, Director of clubs and activities 'iI've scheduled it here on the weekly calendar. They Lend a Guiding Hand I1 F Conducting a test program and directing the field of guidance in Lake Oswego high school occupy Mr. Brown's time. The pressure of work, however, never affects his happy disposition and he is a liv- ing exponent of the well-adjusted personality he hopes to develop in students. Another experienced director of guidance is Miss Barbey. She limits her counseling to seniors and many an Oswego alumnus can thank her for having steered him into the right college and helped him to secure a scholar- ship. Mr. Robert English, Speech ther- Mr. Clark Brown, Director of guidance and counseling '-if '7 H apist These are good test reports. , You're probably wondering MISS Frances BGYIOGYI how I use this gadget. w From his busy schedule Mr. Eng- lish finds time on the average of twice a week to visit the high school in order to help students who have speech handicaps. On other days he visits the three ele- mentary schools of the district. Every schoolday morning Mr. Broad may be seen back of the office c o u n t e r listening to the many and varied excuses poured into his ear by returned absentees. He decides as to whether or not the excuses are legitimate and he keeps a close eye upon attend- ance in general. In addition to teaching science, he counsels jun- ior students. counselor and college Here are some college lets. Mr. Iames Broad. Iunior coun- selor and attendance super- visor I wonder why we have so many absences on Monday. .,4-4 'i Mrs Bonita Myers: Library Sorry. That book is overdue. Mrs Dorothy Peetz: Core What is the simple subject? Z 4 Mr. Iames Nastasia: Art 'lThis is an abstract interpreta tion. With cr Genuine Interest in Subjects They Home economics is offered at LOHS to boys as well as girls and the skill and enthusiasm of both groups is most gratifying to their instructor, Mrs. Perkins. Shorthand has more attraction for girls, but the other commercial subjects, taught by Mrs. Orem, appeal to both sexes. Art and handicraft displays give evidence of considerable talent among the students under the direction of Mr. Nastasia, Whereas Miss Popple's p.e. and tennis team members exhibit a somewhat different type of manual dexterity. The reading of good books, the writing of readable composi- tions, and the intelligent discussion of current events require comprehension and imagination rather than manual skill. Di- rection in these areas is handled by Mrs, Myers, Mrs. Peetz, and Mr. Paul. Mr. Donald Paul: Core Yes, l've been there too Mrs. Evelyn Perkins: Home Eco- ,, nomics Let's adjust the pattern a little. As Mr. Hadley loves science, so Mr. Mullins enthusiastically expounds on biological matters. His laboratory, full of interesting flora and fauna, gives evidence of this. But the one-celled amoeba does not hold for Mrs. Mullins as much fascination as does a Spanish verb. It is her delgiht to find someone from the southern hemisphere with Whom she can converse, just as Miss leffreys delights in finding a fellow- admirer of American literature. Each to his own tastes and whether it is the subject of foot- ball, dramatics, or core, a student may find teachers to motivate him in the person of Mr, Kieling, Mr. Matson, and Mrs. Mee. The Curriculum Includes Both Practical and Aesthetic Sub1ects lt's a long journey from the white lights of Broadway to the fluorescents of LOHS, but not too long for Mr. Prindle, who delights his core classes by inject- ing a bit of drama into the teaching of English and history. Once in a great While he obliges wth a song as well. While Mr. Ross doesn't vocalize, he can play almost any instrument from piano to bass viol, as befits a band instructor. Talented with another kind of instrument, namely hammer and saw, is Mr. Woodward, in whose shop classes fine 'woodworking is learned. But to learn, one must first know the past, according to Mrs. Wetherby, whose great love is history, both ancient and modern. Only a great fondness for the printed page could keep Mrs. West's eyes on the copy so persistently -on newspaper copy, that is. And speaking of persistence, there's Mr. Schroeder instructing 8th graders in their math fundamentals. He knows, as they will someday, that to remodel a house from stem to stern requires a good working knowledge of math, Mrs. Dorothy West: Latin, Iour- Mrs. Ruth Wetherby: Core, So- I . nglism cial Studies Mr. William Woodward Shop Funny l didn't see that error But it was a different story at H MeFh0f11C0l DYGWIUQ on the Copy. Sometimes I'm happy, sometimes l'm blue seems to be the theme song of our two football coaches. Iudging by the picture at the right, this appears to be one of the more glum moments for Coach Cliff Giffin, and his assist- ant, Don Kieling. Nervously chewing his nails, Coach Giffin rarely stands still during a season of football games. This must be a good sign, for in his four years as head football coach at LOHS, his teams have won 25 out of 36 games. Coach Kieling not only assisted Mr. Giffin during the varsity games, but also coached the Lakers' junior varsity squad, a post which he has held for two years. 79 Mackey Rmtchxe G Doug Robmson.
