Published by the Student Body of Lake Oswego High School, Oswego, Oregon 1953 Edition—Volume 11 In the land of tall, green fir trees, In the great Northwest, Stands a school at Lake Oswego, Ranked among the best. Lake High standards will not falter Purple and the White. Always to them we’ 11 be loyal Ever hold upright. FOREWORD As you turn the pages of this book you will see pictures of classes, clubs, assemblies, sports, and many other activities. They are more than photographs, however; they are visible memories of a very important part of your life. It takes many years to complete a lifetime and these are the formative years which will determine to a large extent the kind of adult you will eventually become. Students who feel and express a great deal of school spirit become constructively active adults and, because we feel it is such an important phase of our school life, we have made school spirit the theme of this year’s book. We wish to draw your attention to its value and its exemplification. Having just completed our second year, we are proud of our accomplishments; let us continue to strengthen our unity and loyalty to Lake Oswego High School. 3 DEDICATION We, the students of Lake Oswego High School, in dedicating the 1952-53 Lakers' Log, would like to express our sincere thanks to the group which has done so much for us here at school and in our homes toward promoting school spirit. We know of the untiring efforts of the members to give us a beautiful, well-lighted football field. To finance these lights, they sponsored two carnivals, called “Lakers’ Lite Nites,” each of which was very successful. After the installation of the lights came the setting up and painting of the bleachers, which will seat 1250 persons. Although only the previously mentioned projects are apparent to someone outside the community, we students know that without the help we have received behind the scenes, this school year would not be the success that it has been. Again we wish to say how much we appreciate the Dads’ Club of Lake Oswego. Thanks, Dads! PRESENTATION OF PURCHASE OF FOOTBALL LAKERS’ LITE NITES SCHOLARSHIPS BLANKETS Of what does it consist—that intangible thing we call school spirit? Is it the memory of good times shared with others our own age? Is it satisfaction in noteworthy achievement in sports and other activities of those who are housed under the same administrative roof? We can’t define it, but we know it's there. Without that elusive something a school is just a building with people in attendance; but with it a school becomes an alma mater and the boys and girls a student body with unified loyalty, aims, and pride. Our sprite is but two years old; yet already it’s attaining the proportions of a real spirit. Keep it growing! MR. HAROLD SANTEE If it takes a leader in his own school life to be a school administrator, Mr. Santee is extremely well fitted for the job of Superintendent of Schools of this district. In his own school days, Mr. Santee was president of his senior class, a member of the basketball and track teams and an adtive participant in high school dramatics. All of these things have afforded him experience and appreciation in the things which appeal to young people. Add to all this Mr. Santee’s genuine liking for and understanding of people and you’ll realize why he was and is a school leader—why he exemplifies genuine school spirit. MR. ROBERT BELKNAP That our principal has dramatic ability, a snapshot on a succeeding page will testify. There we see Mr. Belknap in the role of a butler in a school play, costumed becomingly for the part. But dramatics wasn’t his only forte in his own school days. He played basketball, football, baseball, and tennis, and was class president; and, with all that, he maintained membership in the National Honor Society. We are proud to have as an administrator a real exponent of school spirit. 8 Left to right—Mrs. Helen Miller, Mr. George Carl, Mr. Frederick Torp, Mr. Robert Belknap, Dr. C. K. Chapman, Mr. Harold Santee, Dr. Everill Fowlks, Mr. Harry Lovett, Dr. C. Todd Jessell. Behind all of Lake Oswego High School’s achievements is the School Board. When problems arose it was the School Board that thought and planned with a great deal of effort how they should be solved. When we needed more parking space, the athletic field drained, and the track made usable, to whom did we turn? Yes, the School Board. With their wonderful spirit and vision for making and carrying out plans for our school, they have won a high place in our esteem. We think ours is the finest school board any school could have. Mr. Santee realized this and early in the year established a policy of true student government. The wishes of the students reached the board via the suggestion box, and when the suggestions were wise and feasible they were acted upon. We feel that this year’s board has been exceptionally strong and active and the members have proved to be fine representatives of the students as a whole. As individuals they are exponents of the very qualities of which school spirit is comprised—athletic leadership, scholastic attainment, willingness to work, constructive thinking, and sociability. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS One hundred per cent membership! The sophomore class was the first class to attain this goal through the purchase of student body cards at the beginning of the school year. This netted them a fine prize of $10. The class further helped its finances by selling soft drinks at the games. At the end of the school year the sophomore class had an outing at Jantzen Beach on June 4. After this gala affair they all knew the work that had been done during the year was well worth the effort. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS The projects sponsored by the Junior Class were many and varied. First in importance was the highly successful Junior Prom. Using the theme Evening In Paris, the Juniors converted the cafetorium into a veritable French Cafe under a starlit blue sky. Then the Juniors entertained the Seniors with a truly handsome sendoff at Aerial Dam, spareing themselves no effort to be perfect hosts. Lastly, this enterprising group sold candy and cupcakes, pillows and novel license plate tags to augment their finances. Mutt and Jeff SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS The Senior Class got off to a flying start with a number of class meetings under the adult guidance of Miss Barbey and Dr. Boggs. The first item of business was the selling of programs during football and basketball seasons. The class hoped to establish traditions which would be followed by its successors. One such activity was the dance which was sponsored for the upper division. Another was the senior class party, which included swimming, eating, and dancing. The Senior Skip Day was a real test of responsibility and the seniors passed with flying colors, setting a fine example in hospitality and efficiency. The details of Baccalaureate and Graduation occupied the class in May and June. The theme of Graduation was “unfinished rainbow,” and, as the class members received their diplomas, we hoped in our hearts that each would eventually discover his “pot of gold.” Don Woods, President Dr. Arthur Boggs, Advisor Miss Frances Barbey, Advisor 39 Bob Knight, Sergeant-At-Arms FREDRICK EARNEST ADAMS Rally Squad; Cross Country; Track; Swimming; Tennis; Purple O; Stag. THE INTER-CLUB COUNCIL The Inter-club Council establishes the policies for all the clubs of Lake Oswego High School. This year it has stressed the need for more clubs, representing all phases of student activity. As to its accomplishments, the Council has established bulletin board space for club announcements, supervising the displays placed each week in the front windows by the various organizations, and providing the driving force behind the All-School Carnival, in which the clubs participated fully. The Council also served as job hunter and distributor of services by which the clubs could help the school. Thanks to their supervision, the clubs are now chartered and much of their success this year may be attributed to the efficiency of the Council. 58 LAKE VIEWS STAFF Row 2—J. Spaulding, K. Kruse, B.
