Generally, sophomores started out typ- ing at a rate of ten words a minute. Then gradually worked up their G.W.A.M. (gross words a minute) to forty or more. But speed was not the only thing that sophomores taking Typing I were concerned with; they also had to learn how to type formal business letters, research papers, and footnotes. Typing I was found to be a very worthwhile course for sophomores because it would help in the future in any career.
