SENIO v TO YOU, SENIORS: THE LAST From past to present, the class of 1982 has been there: growing, enlightening and, now, remembering and looking towards the future. , _ Think about that Freshman year, the first in a new career. Think about the passing days and weeks. From an empty field to a new school. From a group of va- cant buildings to a virtual community of 1,500. From food services in the student store to a complete campus. From an empty lot to a swimming pool. OF THE ORIGINALS Think about what the Class of 1982 has accomplished and, better yet, think about what it has the potential to do. Aerie ' 82 remembers 1978 to 1982 and, with those memories in mind, dedicates this book to the first four year graduating class from Laguna Hills School. ■ I W.Y i_ i-.-i If miracles can be expected, they can be expected of you and if the future is to be bright you can bricrilfg it ; Whatever your potential, we can only ask thattyouj ' best whether it be as a student or a teacher, a a le follower. H| L i fp Moana Ritchie, Senior Class Representative Annette Peters, Senior Class Secretary Cathy Mattie, Senior Class Treasurer Special. That is the Class of 1982. That is the Senior Class Officers. Special because they represent the first four year graduates from Laguna Hills. Special because they represent those who are the first to really possess the Laguna Hills Experience. Special because they represent the true meaning of 1982. And, now, even more special than ever because they represent the ultimate in Endless Summer; with graduation, they leave only memories, here, in pictures, and there, in your mind. JOHN W. ROOF ROBERT J. ROSE RANDY G. ROSS SENIOR The Class of 1982 is quite a unique group. They are the last of the originals; the first of the tradition setters. Be- ing unique, the Seniors have their own special language that others cannot understand. Their spelling and punctua- tion are, well, as unusual as they are. The Seniors were asked to answer questions like: What are your most outstanding memories? What clubs, sports, or organizations were you in? Who would you like to thank? Where are you off to after school? Sound easy? Summing up the magic of the last four years is not an easy task. It is from there that the language of Seniors begins to form. So, if their memories seem somehow incomprehensible, it could be because only a Senior understands the language of a Senior. The best of luck to all of you, the Class of 1982! Activities included the banana pass and the shoe scramble, which were both won by the Senior class. The class competition was suc- cessful, due to all the class participation. The highlight of the assembly was the exhibition put on by our student council depicting La Quinta ' s Homecoming Court. The assembly concluded with the student body singing the Alma Mater. SPIRIT % - ic  « f tef , « JU 52 IffHPj X - a 1 FLYING HIGH SPIRIT WEEK RAMBLES 54 Spirit Week was an outrageous time for students at Laguna Hills High. On Monday, teachers wore formal and slob attire to show their spirit with fashion. Tuesday was the underclass spirit day where Freshmen worked out in sports, Sophomores roared into the twenties and visiting the WITH NOTHING BUT PRIDE Ancient Roman days, were the Juniors in togas. Wednesday the Seniors grew young once again and became their normal selves, babies. Debbi Reza was announced Queen of Homecoming at the game against La Quinta and Fri- day students danced at The Best of Times Homecoming dance. CIF FRESHMEN Curious, Innocent, Frustrated Freshmen Spirit came alive as the class of 1985 got their first taste of Spirit Week, Wednesday October 7th. Sports day was the theme for the 9th graders and the young Hawks pulled it off in a grand fashion. The competitions that were held at snack, included such events as a miniature golf contest, won by Gioia Criolana, a water balloon toss with splashing winners, Jackie and Suzi Lenz, and a frisbee throw won by Tawny Parkin. All in all, spirit day was a triumphant success for the freshmen and showed the promise of future greatness in the years to come. 56 RUSH INTO SPIRIT WEEK Soikonore Jn 1920 ' i The class of 1984 showed tremendous spirit and enthusiasm when the 1981-82 sophomore dress up day rolled around. Teri Austin and Ross Caouette showed us what the well-dressed flappers and gangsters were wearing this year at Laguna Hills, when they won the costume contest. All day the spirit of the ' 20 ' s came roaring through, and then during break the costumed sophomores par- ticipated ina variety of activities. Dave Price, cleaned up at the ice cream feed, when he showed the spectators just who the king of ice cream eaters was. Among the other events was a water pistol relay, and a Charleston contest. As the day end- ed, all the gangsters and all the flappers returned home and retired their outfits to the attic to prepare for another day at LHHS. jMffilferr. Hail Caesar! Fellow citizens remember the days of Ancient Rome when grapes were thrown abundantly, Hemlock flowed freely and the campus was filled with vibrant togas and joy. John Belushi would have been truly proud of this glorious day. Let it be pro- claimed throughout the land that the juniors were vic- torious over spirit week. Hail Juniors, we salute you, Et tu Jeffrey. i; ! JUNIORS IN TOGAS HAIL TO CAESAR . . . AND THE BABIES WITH CLASS ' The cries of Senior babies rattled the streets of Laguna Hills when Baby Day 1981 finally arrived. Newborn and overgrown, the Seniors came well prepared to hear fairy tales and participate in the joys of childhood. Many infants were seen playing Duck, Duck Goose, Red Rover Red Rover and Red Light Green Light early in the morning. The lollypop eating contest was won by Leofwin Clark and the balloon-tied-to- shoes-contest was a bursting success. Baby Day will be remembered always in the minds of the Senior Class of 1982. WILL LIVE ON FOREVER HOMECOMING COURT The 2nd annual Homecoming was a success when Debra Reza accepted the title of Queen from last year ' s Homecoming Queen Lisa Ritchie. This year ' s court was announced at the Varsity football game aganst La Quinta. The court included Princess Moana Ritchie, Princess Diana Gallo, Princess Cindy Hite, Princess Donna Sherrod and Queen Debra Reza. It was a compelling story of Charlie Gordon, a mentally handicapped man and a willing victim of a strange experi- ment based on the intellectual capabilities of man. Charlie, played by Jim Chamberlin, accepts the operation that would make him smarter. Going from dumb to smart, Charlie undergoes changes mentally and physically, but when he learns that Algernon, a mouse dies from the same experiment, he soon believes the same will happen to him and he starts to regress and returns to his normal state, a mentally handicapped man. 66 ALGERNON Flowers for Algernon Directed by Mark Megill Main Characters Jim Chamberlin Charlie Teri Trapp Alice Mike Newton Dr. Nenbur Kim Meier Dr. Stauss Mike Brinard Burt All performances were dedicated to Melanie Ward. 67 WINTER BRINGS SURF DANCE Let ' s go surfing now, everybody ' s learning how, come on a safari with me! The waves were rad and the sounds were cool at the ' 60 ' s surf dance. Far out surfer cats hangin five and riding the tide in their beach apparel even though Summer was tucked under the chilly Winter skies in early December. Though the gig was small, there were cool dudes and swingin chicks hangin ' out down near the surf in the gym. Groups like the Beach Boys, Go-Go ' s, and the Deltones, played the wild tunes that everyone wanted to hear. There was a limbo contest in which surf cats put their skills to the test and there were far out slides of high waves and totally cool surfed out surfers. Bananas and pineapple were sold as well as leis. It was a farout night in those wild ' 60 ' s down near the surf in Laguna Hills. 68 AND VARIED ASSEMBLIES As winter shed it ' s cold days upon Laguna Hills, two assemblies warmed up the students. One brought a little Christmas, the other brought fashion and excitement. The Christmas Assembly on December 18th, delivered Santa Claus and the old tale of Twas the Night Before Christmas. Class competition was the candy cane pass and a lesson on how to wrap a student as a gift. The Winter Assembly on January 9th announced the Winter Formal Court and gave the crowd a glimpse of the newest formal fashions. WINTER LIGHTS SHINE BRIGHT AT WINTER FORMAL ■•• mi , i «i .Jyf r clfl Cc s A 1 X — 70 HilHHi ♦ ■ On the star filled night of January 16th, the Winter Lights seemed to be shining the brightest in a lux- urious ballroom at the South Coast Plaza Hotel. With ladies in elegant gowns and men in formal tuxedos, couples shared a wonderful evening at the Winter Formal of 1982. The band was City Lights and when they played, the room seemed to fill with dancers and a glorious memory was underway. (Sigh!) Time drifted on, and the announcing of the court brought happy smiles to a new King and Queen, Danny Blanck and Lisa Pike. The 1981 winter formal Queen, Cindy Robertshaw stepped down from her throne as Lisa ' s reign as queen began. Memories were shared and the winter lights seemed to shine bright even after the evening was over. APPLEGATE LOLA MEG GLORIA SISTER VAN BUREN In 1955, a man so intrigued in staying home, drinking beer and wat- ching baseball, came upon a chance to play against the New York Yankees and to become a well known baseball star known as Joe Hardy. This play, Damn Yankees, was preformed by The Hilltop Players of Laguna Hills High, directed by Mark S. Megill and backed by LHHS ' s Or- chestra in late March The musical comedy opened in the theater to reveal the blooming talent from all of the stars. With the help of Joe Hardy and a devil of a man, Mr Applegate, the consistant losing streak of the Washington Senators won the Yankees in the World Series and also in the hearts of all known Yankees despisers. Jim Chamberlin and Stacey Stevens played the well loved but evil roles of Mr. Applegate and Lola, delightful versions of wickedness trying to keep Joe a baseball hero and not for him to escape back to his beloved wife, Meg. As for a happy en- ding? well the devil was finally put in his place and Meg and Joe Hardy liv- ed happily ever after. s u p E R L A T I V E S •E ' N I«0«R The class of 1982; the last of the originals. In the beginning, man brought stones and wood to Laguna Hills and there appeared, a mess. And upon the mess, came students to create a school and to begin a life of learning and growing. Friends were found and memories were shared by the family of originals who were first at Laguna Hills High. In dark rooms, lights mysteriously faded into bleakness and stories of a ghost named Poncho were told. Victories were won in sports and the ris- ing of the Hawk sent forth competition. At the end of four long years, Seniors retire from their desks, return faded books and set forth for a new beginn- ing, a new life. On these pages, are the Superlative Seniors that ranged in catagories from Most Likely To Succeed, to the most likely to do something out of the likely. Things like politics, econ- omy, entertainment and events con- cerning America, or the world for that matter, pass by and are stored in history books; only to be looked upon as learning mate- rial instead of remembered as good or bad times through the eyes of ahigh school student. On these pages, are those times in one year, March 1981 to March 1982. In this year, it seemed that while the age of the Space Invaders had its back turned, a new video game came and ate it up . . . PAC-MAN. In the movie theater, Raid- ers of the Lost Ark seemed to be the favorite among many. Taps, Reds and On Golden Pond also made the scenes. In television, Hill Street Blues, Mash, Dallas and General Hospi- tal caught many eyes while Fri- days and Saturday Nite Live were the late night relaxers for tired weekend wanderers. In other entertainment, the sounds of the Rolling Stones in October ' 81, gave Mick Jagger a spectacular return. Music was unique with new wave and punk bands seemingly com- ing out of nowhere while Journey played superbly for rock fans. The ' 80s promised the greatest in music and the first two years marked the records for new and origi- nal sounds. The U.S. car manufactures were driven away by imported cars and the cost of gas dropped in price from $1.40 per gallon to $1.15. President Reagan was shot in the chest by John Hinckley Jr. on March 31, 1981 in front of a Washington D.C. hotel. His Press Secretary, James Brady was also critically injured. On April 12th, the Space Shuttle Columbia lifed off from its laun- ching pad at Cape Canaveral in Florida. It was the world ' s first reusable space craft and after 36 orbits and 54 hours in space, the craft glided to a perfect landing in the Mojave Desert. On May 13th, Pope John Paul II was seriously wounded by a gunshot wound fired in St. Peters Square in Rome. In Atlanta, slayings of young blacks reached 30 in a two year series of deaths and Air Controllers flew down from their towers in August on a strike. In Northern California, farmers fought a pesty fly; the medfly. On July 31st, a beautiful wedding took place at St. Pauls Cathedral in London. Millions of people watched the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles of Britan and Lady Diana Spencer. In Poland, strikes continued and a country full of fear awaited troubles ahead. Sandra D. O ' Conner was appointed the honor of being the first woman judge to the Supreme Court in September, and Voyager 2 flew by Saturn and sent remarkable photos back to Earth. Sugar Ray Leonard unified the World Welter Weight title September 16th over Thomas Hearns at the riches sports event in history and in early October, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt was assasinated by a band of commandos in Cairo. The Dodgers did well in baseball as they won the World Series over the New York Yankees. On December 13th, the Polish Government declared a state of emergency and issued a decree of martial laws On Christmas Eve, President Reagan asked America to place a single candle in the window to show our support for the people in Poland, for solidarity. At the Super Bowl, the San Fran- sisco 49ers swept the field with a score of 26-21 over Cincinnati. One week in January, a cold front swept across the nation that came down from the Artie Zone. In seven days, 261 people died in related cold weather deaths as the temperatures dipped down to places like 30 below and wind chill facters blew by front doors at 100 degrees below zero. The mountains were full of snow and weekends were spent skiing in powder or relaxing at the beach on a perfect California day. In March, the Jupiter effect alligned all of the planets to the sun for the first time and the last for another century and John Belushi, the well-loved comedian for Saturday Night Live, died. Yet with its many problems, the world seemed to continue on through the year with beautiful moments. Times are remembered and forgotten yet they are relived in memories of us all. Highlights in view will hopefully bring back the good times and let our minds ponder on what has happened, and what will happen in the future of our lives. m w 1 RHER L HAVE OUR WHOL WES THROUGH ■■ ' .1 m ' J± 1 IT ■ 3M STANDING PROUD AN THE HAWKS WILL BE IN VIEW jp V ■ _ . % v .| | LAGUNA HILLS ALWAYS BE TRUE a ' !: fe ; - BROWN AND GOLD FOREVER WE WILL HONOR YOU i ..jr.jJsasK HAWKS SOAR TO FIRST CIF FIRST ROW Brian Jones, Bret Sangunett. It was a fantastic season. — Sheila Conner ■ ■■ ■l B 95 A DYNASTY IN THE MAKING r ' M I Coach Tom Long The 1981 water polo season saw its best success in the Varsity level since the conception of the program. The team had 8 wins over other varsity teams and a se- cond place title in the Don Lugo Varsity Tournament. The varsity has begun to lay a foundation of success for future teams to build on. The- entire water polo program is graduating only one athlete. Therefore, next year it will have the depth and ex- perience that every good team must have. Defeating Laguna Beach in league play was a major victory for the Seahawks. Continued hard work with the combined ef- forts from the veteran varsity poloists and this season ' s JV and Frosh • SodH teams makes the Seahawks ' goal of a 1982 league championship and a C.I.F. berth very possible. Next year will be the fourth year that many of the Hawks have played together as a team. ■ ' i ' - i f.:: TOP ROW: Mike Cross, Jim Cranford, Kay Shahi, Bob Reinhold. The young Seahawks lost only one non- league game during the season to Fountain Valley. Many of the J.V. players will contribute to varsity play next season in hopes of conti- nuing their success. Much of the team ' s success can be attributed to twice a day workouts and long hours of dedication. The Frosh- Soph team also tasted victory this season as they tallied up 12 wins. The poloists feel that with con- tinued hard work over the summer, they can dominate the league on all 3 levels. Throughout the years of the schools existence, the aquatics program has grown greatly in quali- ty and quantity. The 1982 season looks bright for the Seahawks. J.V. This year Coach Lynn Asaro decided not to carry a J.V. team, which may have contributed to the high quality of play by her team. The preseason proved to be the highlight of the year as the team posted a 12-1 record an d was ranked fourth in the 2A Division of the C.I.F., and third in all of Orange County. This was the first time we have had a team ranked in either poll. They won the Garden Grove and Magnolia Tour- naments, and finished third in the Brea Tournament. The league season was a disappointment as the Hawks were the victims of two one-point losses, and two three- point losses. The team did defeat League Champion Capistrano Valley. Additional highlights were the victory over district rival El Toro, and two wins over cross-town foe, Mission Viejo. Playing major roles in the team ' s success were; Dan Blank, Robert Carter, Curt Cook, Todd Litfin, Brett Olivier, Tom Ramsey, and Todd Williams. The 15-8 record was a fine accomplishment and with three important players returning to go with some talented underclassmen, next year ' s team hopes to continue the winning tradition that the basketball program has established. 108 JV SHOWS TALENT RONT ROW: Van Studdert, Mark Simon, Loc Ly, Kraig Kawada, Craig Maietta, Mike Dealy. The Class of 1982 was provided four years of Laguna Hills High School experience to draw on for those fond remembrances. You seniors will vividly remember opening day in September, 1978, when rains had turned this unfinished campus into a quagmire; but you will remember more vividly the friends that you made that first year. All of the first Hawks were looking for identity and this Class of 1982 was direct- ly involved in the development of all that characterizes Laguna Hills High School. You helped make it possible for the tone of this school to be positive. You got involved. You welcomed students from around the world to this campus. You dedicated your time and talents to perfor- mances, contests, academics, and social development. You worked with the staff to make possible a positive Parent Student Staff rela- tionship. You were anxiously willing to be part of the first of everything at this school. You enjoyed successes and fought frustration. You are loved by this community. My goal as Principal of this school has been to provide direction and atmosphere that encourages what you have accomplished. Best of luck to all of you, 186 BOARD OF EDUCATION Dr. Richard Welte, Superintendent Mike Davis Preston Howell Dore Gilbert Louise Adler Kristine Kister Mark Reynolds, Student Member SECRETARIAL STAFF FRONT ROW Sherry Drake Julia Kawada Patty Kroening BACK ROW Corinne Davis Marge Beaubien Carmella Wentworth Carol Stephenson Joyce Mondry Jane Roberts NOT PICTURED: Carol Newbern Maryanne Hruska ADMINISTRATION COUNSELING Tim Sullivan, Assistant Principa Richard Chase, Counselor, Administrative Intern Jim Gwyn, Assistant Principal Barbara Ellerbroek, Counselor Tony Ferruzzo, Activities Director Jane Wheeler, Counselor 188 Steve Goetz, Counselor Larry Luby, Psychologist CLASSIFIED STAFF Barbara Mechiing NOT PICTURED: Frank Baracao Maxlne Gereb. Headed by another first, a Commissioner of Clubs (Debbie Reza, right), this organization is made up of representatives from all of the on- campus clubs at LHHS. It ' s purpose is to serve the best interest of all clubs as a whole, including fundraisers, publicity, and brainstorming. The idea behind all of this, of course, is to stengthen the club program at LHHS and to provide better oppurtunities for all students who want to get involved. How has it worked so far? Terrifically! says Debbi Reza, I.C.C. Chairperson, we ' re off to a great start! We ' ve set a tradition for the future, which should hold more activities in store than ever. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Jeff Fisch ASB Vice-President Diane Gallo ASB Treasurer Lisa Norman ASB Recording Secretary Sue Greby Corresponding Secretary We are the ones behind the scenes and at the microphone. We are the first to arrive and the last to leave. We are the organizers, the planners, the workers and ultimately, the ones applauded or, as the case may be, blamed. In short, we are the doers, not the only ones at Laguna Hills High School, to be sure, but certainly unique in our scope and achievement. We are Student Council. Each Student Council member, as an elected or appointed officer, representative or commissioner, has experienced the satisfaction of a job well done and of duty fulfilled. On the other hand, each one has also stayed up all night to prepare for the next day ' s event, pulling their hair out over that missing prop or person that absolutely had to be there to make it all work right. Also, as leaders, they have helped LHHS to grow and have grown themselves in the process. That growth, I think, combined with the feeling of satisfaction that accom- panies each successful activity, would make them all gladly do it over again. — Leofwin Clark, ASB President WWW Cindy Hite Donna Sherrod Rep. to the School Board Comm. of Assemblies Bob Rose Kristi Blankenfeld Comm. of Boys ' Athletics Comm. of Girls ' Athletics 202 Debbi Reza Comm. of Clubs Brian Jones Comm. of Education Lisa Koravos Comm. of Pep and Spirit Todd Bennett Comm. of Publicity Tanya Novak Comm. of Social Events Shawn Taggart Senior Class President Moana Ritchie Senior Class Rep. Kasey DuRose Freshman Class President Throughout the 1981-82 school year, the Associated Student Body Council sponsored a myriad of events. From more dances and assemblies than ever to a very successful Blood Drive (above) for the Red Cross to our first Student Council Open Forum Meeting to the Senior Class Dating Game, each one was an accomplishment in itself against a tide of organization and planning. As the number of ASB sponsored activities increas- ed, so did their quality. That, according to Activities Director Tony Ferruzzo, has made this one of the best councils, years, for that matter, that I ' ve ever seen. Thanks for the compliment Mr. Ferruzzo, as well as for keeping it short. Dina Koravos Freshman Class Rep. Yuttasak Samawee Foreign Exchange Student Mr. Tony Ferruzzo Activities Director This year ' s Student Council worked all summer on the planning of events and activities. The highlight of this work was Leadership Camp at the University of California, Santa Barbara in August. Among other things, the group took second place in the talent show competition with their Giligan ' s Island and Brady Bunch skit. One other integral part of Leadership Camp was the fact that this year ' s Council, more than any other, was really in. This, of course, is illustrated best by the picture above. BOOSTERS, This year, more than ever, clubs have abounded at LHHS. From the academic to the athletic, they have provided unlimited opportunities for everyone. Many of these groups possess a membership as wide and varied as the school itself. Some, on the other hand, are relatively smaller in scope. Nevertheless, Aerie ' 82 has tried to capture them doing what they do best: making LHHS the great place that it is. A special thanks is extended to the Athletic and Music Booster Clubs who, no matter what the activity, are always there when anyone needs them. They are one of the most impor- tant factors in making Endless Summer at LHHS a happy one. Another vote of gratitude goes to the P.T.S.O for also be- ing there to help whenever needed. All year long, support can be counted on to make any event a success. In fact, they are also an invaluable part of LHHS life. ET CETERA . . . 206 FRENCH CLUB The French Club brought a little bit of Europe to LHHS during 1981-82, but, more importantly, they brought a little bit of LHHS to France during their trip there. Sponsored by Madame Brooks, their purpose is to better understand and relate to the French culture. Pictured are: Mme Brooks, and officers Candide Stotler, Jean Grigg, Danelle Settlemire, and Kim-Ahn Nguyen. A.F.S., American Field Service, is a club that offers better understanding between dif- ferent people of the world by offering foreign exchange programs. Pictured above are. All Aerie staffs have met the challenges that each edition had to offer, but no staff has done it with the absolute style of the Aerie ' 82 family. We think you ' ll agree that this is the highest quality book ever and there is no doubt this was the staff year with the most laughs. What staff member will forget such touching moments as Ken Navarra ' s farewell party or singing Happy Birthday to Leofwin in the hall? Who can forget such valuable learned skills as CBR or HairFu or when not to yell SEX in the classroom. What about the dramatic moments like the trial of Michele or Mike ' s trauma? Of course there was the toga party, holiday storytime and an oc- casional game of Subway. Bobbing for apples was fun and pie throwing was, uh, messy. Trips to fine fast food establishments yielded trash for mom to gripe about. And through all this, we even did a yearbook.
