Carl VValz,s duties. Upon being graduated from Hutchinson Central High School, Mr. Walz was awarded a Cornell Scholarship. He came to Lafay- ette as a mathematics teacher in 1928. He belongs to Phi Delta Kappa and has an Rd. Unobtrusively and efliciently they perform the many neces- sary tasks around the school with which Lafayette could not dispense. ln their ranks are students of character, integrity, and honesty. The monitor organization is not as large this year as formerly. But it makes up in quality what it lacks in numbers. The organization was begun by ltlr. Himmele several years ago. lVhen N111 Himmele left to join the army the monitors were taken over by the Acting Assistant Principal. Congratulations N111 VValz for the fine way this group has functioned. 1-4 FACULTY INFCRMALS SENIOR SECTION S Seniors ours is a far dif- ferent type of education from that received by our forefathers. When we started school as freshmen, our country was at peace and now as we leave school, our country is at war. Wei My ILC-,rogyx T0 THE C ITTLE did you think when you entered Lafayette as Freshmen four years ago that you would be leaving the school in the midst of the greatest war the world has ever known. Little did you realize that graduation from high school would hurl you into such a maelstrom of conflicting ideals, with the nations deter- mined to fight to the bitter end for the achievement of such ideals. Little did you suppose that modern democratic and Christian civilization could be so challenged in a world far removed from primitive living. Little did you understand that you would inevitably be drawn to share in and support your own nation in this bitterest of struggles. All that you believed had forever been banished from the world has once more reared its ugly head. Perhaps this has left you dazed and confused-it could scarcely leave a different impression. But you have the priceless heritage of youth, the inborn ability to rebound from and resent all ideas' that the world is lost. You feel strongly and deeply that it must not and therefore cannot be so. Youth makes it possible for you to face inevitable hardships with staunch courage, knowing deep in your heart that right will eventually win as surely as day follows night and season follows season. Renewed strength enables you to lift your bit on the great wheel of united effort. A deeply-grounded faith assures you in its whisperings that an even better world is bound to come from the darkness and toil of the present one. You know that, as always, after the storm the sun will shine. You go forward to share in the opportunities of the new dayg you will perform a better task than your elders. Never have I said to a. Senior Class more sincerely, Grasp and hold fast to Lafayette's motto-'Be Strong and of a Good Courage' No matter where you go, no matter what you may be called on to endure, no matter how sorely you are tried, let it be some small comfort to feel that Lafayette will be standing behind you and wishing for you Strength, a life of Honor and utter Loyalty in the Service of your Country. The four years we have spent here have been carefree and won- derful, and many of us will look back longingly to that happy period. During these important years, when we were slowly being trans- formed into young men and women, we forged bonds of close acquaintanceship and friendship which will remain among life's most vivid and most pleasant memories. This is not a time for regret or sorrow but rather a time for hope and jubilation. Tonight marks the culmination of the first stage in our careers. The sky did weep and thus good use was found for my newly-acquired raincoat. At midday, which was the appointed time, did enter the spacious portals, pausing to gaze in wonderment at the shining trophies. In the great assembly hall, did receive a long lecture about our dutiesg was also instructed to buy a book of the budget. Having undergone most peculiar examin- ings, did Hnd my way wearily to the exits. Home after a big day, bewildered. SEPTEMBER 9 To school again, where, while trying to decode and interpret my new schedule, I was frequently ill-advised by the kindly gentlemen of the upper classes as to the location of the gym, pool, and cafeteria, which, I did admit, were most cunningly concealed. NOVENIBER 12 Attired in purple and white sweater, red scarf, orange sox, and new reversible, did attend my first football game. Did eagerly seek out Jule VVeinheimer, Jerry Himmelfarb, Emily Tillou, Robert Freedman, who were among the most ardent rooters. Our fighting eleven did oppose the Bennett onslaught most nobly and defend our mighty reputation by defeating them 14-12. JANUARY 15 Having diligently studied general science, algebra, Latin, and the like, did fear- fully enter the exam rooms, only to find that the teachers had greatly overestimated the tests. Did find, however, by comparing my most carefully penned scratch paper with those of my mates, that my abilities had been underestimated. IXIARCH 6 Gloria Youngberg did compose a lengthy poem with the help of eleven other girls, which Miss lVIacKenzie's general science classes did present in the assembly today. They did instruct us not to leave toys on the stairs, or to play with matches, but to practice all manner of safety measures. Douglas Mcclive did draw the fun- niest cartoons I ever saw. They were flashed on the screen that all might enjoy his artful wit, while Howie Simon did interposed witty remarks concerning them, APRII, 6 Today Easter vacation began and I did go ubooklessu home, flinging all my cares to the winds. Great reunions are planned with all my friends. APRIL 22 The performance of lllark Schlickerman, Genevieve Clark, Donald Lubick, as well as other freshmen in the Freshman Day Assembly Program, did make me feel exceedingly proud of my class, as I did witness this, our first assembly presentation. IVIAY 19 Did stride proudly into the school to observe the talents of Lafayetters in the second musical show in my life at L. H. S. Cliff Vogelsang did do well at represent- ing the freshmen on that clarinet. JUNE 17 Having striven valiantly in my second encounter with the literature of the Regents Fathers, I did embark, victorious, on the summer vacation. SEPTEMBER 7 56 SOPHCMORE YEAR IXIOVEMBER Z2 Some of our fair classmates did achieve exceeding high in the Honor Roll As- sembly, in fact, Israel Jacobs, Ruth Layer, Dolores Villella, Arlene MacNall did even appear on the elevated platform in the front of the room. After school did mingle with friends and seniors at a dance in the gym. Since I have now taken my first big step toward being an upper-classman, do feel privileged to attend at least social functions in LONG TROUSERS. NOVE1N'IBER 9 My heart did bleed for Martha Jewett, Charlotte Karg, Jimmy Rosenberg, Harold Levy, and Elisabet Klein who were forced to leave their Tales behind them and vacate Nlr. Mulde's 4th-floor retreat in the fire drill! Those stairs are truly wicked APRIL 1 Upon consulting my copy of the TRIANGLE, I did see that Maria Mogavero, the author, or shall I say, the collector of Don't Get lVIe VVrong+ is a promising columnist. Can turn down my lamp and go to sleep with great confidence in my mates, who are gaining ground in higher Lafayette circles. h MAY 23 I Did attend the second musical of the year, with wonderment as to who would perform that I should recognize. Did hear Zelda Palter sing sweetly and lNfIarian O'Kane also. Did see Sandy Kulick, and Pat Flynn, that I did know. I did have great desire to see another musical soong it was so entertaining. JUNE 16 Those printed sheets which were distributed among all members of the student body did prove to be more strenuous tests than those offered in previous years fat least the one in geometryj and did fill my mind with exceeding turbulent thoughts concerning the future. But now I am a junior and as such, do intend to lay aside all thoughts of academic education and thoroughly enjoy the summer. I A JUNIOR YEAR ' SEPTEMBER 4 . To school again, where did derive much pleasure from relating tales of the summer passed. Having revealed my life history on varicolored cards did turn my lingering steps homeward, in quest of last yearis lock. OCTOBER 16 Did sing and cheer ,lustily over the 53-7 defeat of Grover Cleveland High School's football team. Do see great promise in my fellow-mates as senior members of the team. NOVEIXIBER 10 Today, we were Juniors marchingg sons of mighty blazers, who led toward the victory. Our beloved Cap Mellen did, as is the custom, read the names of our honored dead. The esteemed William Grammar did deliver a speech and wreaths were placed on 'the monument. Thus did we fulfill one of our Junior obligations, that of commemoration of the sacrifice our boys made in the last war. 37 DECEMBER 20 To assembly, where the freshmen did present an operetta. Did marvel exceed- ingly at the great size of some of the freshmen, and did gaze longingly at Bob Eckis and other seniors who did contribute such large sums to the Christmas fund. Now I am free to pursue my own interests for ten whole days. JANUARY 27 Did display phenomenal skill in handling my exams. In fact, even teachers seemed surprised but happy that I did show such promise. F EBRUARY 11 Have five times attended the assembly this week and do feel most patriotic. Bill of Rights VVeekl' programs have been featured daily. FEBRUARY 20 Tonight did marvel at the musical ability of Victoria Pawelski who did per- form in a super'l manner in Miss Cherry Blossom, a musical comedy. Singing, acting, and scenery were excellent examples of the talent we have in our midst. The playing of Marion Smith, llflarcia McGuire, Doris McMorrow, Genevieve Clark, Harry lNIorton, and Harry llriiller did greatly enrich the tone of the orchestra. NIARCH 17 The third issue of The Triangle did appear today with birds and flowers on the cover, while snow did blow without the school. Revived in the mimeographed form, it does fill us with pride to think that our classmates Marvin lklossmond, Ismar Tick, Betty Unher, and Betty Tutton are responsible for it. APRIL 24 Charles Unbehaun and Emily Tillou do represent us well as president and vice- president of our class, as do Marion Smith and Dan Anderson as our secretary and treasurer. The unanimous first ballot for Chuck did prove to be a most spectacu- lar event. Do feel justly proud that all the candidates for whom I voted did emerge VlCt0l'l0llS. IVIAY 16 To Junior Prom and did dance to the lilting strains of Jack Spencers' orchestra music. Did learn that lylartha Jewett, Bill Durkee, and their committee were re- sponsible for the colorful decorations, which did adorn the gymnasium. JUNE 26 Did clamor for my report card, that I might learn my fate, as decided by my efforts on the numerous examinings which I did undergo. And now to spend a happy summer, with one thought uppermost in my mind-I am a senior. SENIOR YEAR A senior at last! Up betimes and to school, where I did stride jauntily through' the corridors, greeting old friends and classmates. All seniors I did greet with hearty handclasp, but underclassmen with a sympathetic, understanding look. SEPTEMBER 26 To school, where I did enjoy assembly, at which candidates for cheerleading did lead school cheering. Voice did get exeedingly hoarse. Did marvel at the voice of Iule Weinheimer and the antics of VVin Duzenbury, Gloria Youngberg, Pat Flynn, SEPTEMBER 3 Florence lklilliken, Bill Parkinson, Phil I-Ioffmire, Clif Wynn, and Bill Simms were- also chosen. Do much wonder how teams can lose with such cheering as was dis- played today. Home and to bed with sore throat. 38 NOVEMBER 15 To the football game in the afternoon and did shiver joyfully in fall winds, as Lafayette did trim McKinley nicely, thus avenging last year's defeat. Did much rejoice with hundreds of fellow enthusiasts. John Casey, Chuck Unbehaun, Joe Cutrona, Ed Armstrong, Harry Sultz, Pete Larllona, and Bud Dowling were hailed as heroes of the day. NOY'EMBER 18 Excitement did run high over election of class officers. The final votes did show that Charles Unbehaun was to be our president, Emily Tillou our vice-president, Marioii Smith our secretary, John Casey our treasurer, Betty Tutton and Hans Kipping our historians, Lois Herman our poet, and Ellen Herniman our marshal. JANUARY 5 In assembly, Mr. Gott did outline plans for air raid drills and sale of bonds and stamps. Did much speculate as to what all this will lead to and did much wonder about attempts to organize boys' knitting club. FEBRUARY 10 Ted Davis, lVIark Shlickerman, Irving 'l'empleton, Hans Kipping having left school to attend higher institutions of learning, we were, because of the loss of the last, required to cast ballots for another historian. Harvey Rivo did succeed in achieving this coveted position and all was restored to order again. FEBRUARY 13 TRIANGLES did come out today and did contain choice bits of gossip. Did marvel exceeding at the tremendous strides forward it has made since last year. Editors and reporters do ever p1'omise us bigger and better TRIANGLES. APRIL 1 Was reminded of Ye Olde Farm days with the ringing of Mr. Gottls cowbell between classes, but was informed that it was not an April Fool Joke. MAY 1 Did don my best suit and did receive a swell-smelling boutonniere, that I might be aptly accoutered to participate in the celebration of senior boys' Arbor Day. Exer- cises were conducted exceeding well, as was to be expected, and planting ceremony was impressive. Home to bed, where, satisfied' with the thought that this had been the best Lafayette had ever had, did sleep peacefully. MAY 1 i Did attire myself in my best apparel and did set forth to attend the senior class party. Did so hope for an opportunity to dance with Sally Robins, Pat Flynn, or Emily Tillou, but was much disappointed. Nevertheless, did thoroughly enjoy the music, refreshments, and fellowship with my friends. Thus did enjoy myself once more before the arrival of the fearful exams, in thought of which I do quake. JUNE 12 Exams! But little time to pen my accounts which are very few. Am full of apprehension and hopeful expectancy. Did pass the day in study and am convinced of life's futility. To sleep, if possible. JUNE 25 Graduated at last! And having successfully completed four years of constant struggle, I shall now revert to my old nature and begin once again--as a freshman, in halls of more advanced learning. 39 E 1 . i 4 O VALEDICTQRY S THIS, our Senior year, draws to a close, we must say good-bye to Lafay- ette, to our friends, and to all those, who in these last four years have helped us. Here in Lafayette our lives have been greatly enriched. We have found many friends, We have been taught to think and reason, we have learned to strive toward a set goal, and we have learned and practiced the principles of democratic living. In Lafayette, however, our lives have been sheltered and well-ordered. Our mistakes, no matter how serious, have been corrected and forgiven. When the way seemed too difficult, we have been helped and encouraged. Opportunities have opened like doors before us. We have been guided and directed in all that we have under- taken. Now we realize t-hat we must face a different situation. Cur accomplishments must be the result of our own efforts. VVe must seek our opportunities, and we shall have to justify our own mistakes. It will be necessary to formulate our own plans, set our own goals, and make our own decisions. VVe move on: we move down: we go to face whatever may be ahead. Classes before us have realized that with graduation would come ne .v responsi- bilities. They knew that they must go forth to face difficult situations. Never before, however, have the responsibilities been greater, or the situations more difficult than they are now. VVe recognize the fact that in the world today, evil and injustice are prevalent. As we move on from this school, we shall need wisdom in our attempt to End the roots of these wrongs and to destroy them. To find the right, to hold it forth, and to establish it throughout the world, shall be our goal. The world of tomorrow can be only what we resolve to make it. Let us, therefore, set our hopes and aims high. VVe must have also a spirit of unity and of faith in others and in ourselves. Only as we press toward the goal together, can we know success. If we are united, our faith in tomorrow will be as a light, shining in a world where darkness prevails. This world in which we hope to live must be one based upon peace and tolerance, and brotherly love. This will be America's lasting contribution to world history. As we go from Lafayette, we face a new life. To make great plans and momen- tous decisions may be difficult, for we have had little experience. As citizens of America, We come as a wandering people from mountains, and we have before us a wide field in which we must work. No longer will there always be a friend eager to help, our success or failure will depend upon ourselves. Now, with graduation, we pass into the day to be discovered. VVe leave behind us the life which we have so enjoyed in Lafayette, but we know that there is much in store for us in the world of tomorrow. And so with gratitude for the heritage which has been ours in Lafayette, and with a strong faith in the future of America and of the world, we say good-bye as we move on to accept the challenge which has been placed before us. This was true when there were thirteen stars in the Hagg it is true now when there are forty-eight stars. We showed ourselves willing to be trained in the many different fields offered by the foreman of the old plant and were quickly drawn into the production line beside our fellow workers. VVC started the motors running by placing cogs in the wheels of sports, art, music, and scholarship. Our three little fishes, Harry Rutter, Hans Haage, and Alex Potter, early showed their inclination toward aquatic sports by making the swimming team in our freshman year. Budding artists were found in the persons of Norbert Kammer, Virginia Pfeffer, Robert C. Smith, Janice Powsner, Dick Richter, and Helen Unterecker. To the music department were added such illustrious members as Thomas Rizzo, Vincent Celestino, and Marion O'Kane. Audrey lVIacNall, Charles Nlessner, and Patricia Bickel upheld the old tradition of high scholastic ability. After a temporary layoff, we returned with renewed vigor to our places in the wheels of production. To the list of those who had gained prominence were added the names of those who participated in the plant's operetta. lVIany of the leading participants, Robert D. Schaffer, Julia Arrigo, Vincent Celestino, Jerome Goldstein, and Henry Anello, not to mention the girls' chorus, were among the members of our class. So ended our first two years of apprenticeship with capable leaders coming to the fore. VVith a slight increase in prestige we returned to face a new year, replete with added responsibilities and pleasures. The first of these was the traditional Armistice Day celebration in which we juniors proudly displayed our talents. VVe were led in this undertaking by an able chairman, Jerome Goldstein. lylartin Barry, another capable junior oratorg Julia Arrigo, a nightingale of Cherry Blossom fame, Norma Herman, an expert at the piano, and Vincent Celestino, first clarinetist in our school orchestra pooled' their talents in a most successful effort to provide us with a well- rounded program. Following this we had our traditional march to the Boechat monu- ment where the service was led by Harry Rutterg the wreath was placed by Audrey lVIacNall. David Runyan is our contribution to the football teamg Jimmie Cownie, Robe1't J. Smith, and Leo Casey gifts to the basketball team, Hans Haage and Harry Rutter, 44 All-High members of the swimming team, and Rocco DeCollibus and joe Penhallur- ick, cross-country harriers. Our class can boast both brains and beauty in the person of Nora Weinraub. And speaking of genius, what would our debate team do without its timekeeper, Kenneth Hart? Shirley Troyan, Jerry Donavan, and Virginia Pfeffer, able monitor squad leaders, are often found Htrippingu about the halls delivering lunches to forgetful students. Our class has proved its Worth in the war effort by producing leaders such as Junior Red Cross heads Clarence Davis and Robert Talliday and our champion knitter, Lotti Haas. To Tommy Rizzo for his inspiring Alma Mater song We extend our thanks and praise, for it will remain an example of his initiative and school spirit as well as a contribution of our class. After much deliberation and careful consideration the Junior class elected its representzltives to the labor council. Gott. successive principals of the school, we have won many honors and trophies. Our competitors are our friends in the other high schools and we enjoy the exciting tussles on the All-High Stadium field. XVe have interclass competitions i our own school gymnasiums, under the supervision of our physical educatio instructors. Girls as well as boys enjoy the directed swimming lessons and the scientili health training. Arthur A. Uetmers, Captain Calvert li. Nlellen, and Nlr. Frank R. Gott. Because the population of the City of Buffalo increased so rapidly, Lafayette High School was opened in l903. Mr. lletniers was the first principal. A man of great culture, he demanded high standards of scholarship from all those with whom he worked. He would often enter a classroom and himself conduct the class. Many people remember the assemblies in which he would read poetry or play the piano. He also found time to write some of our school songs. In 1906 he resigned to become a master of a college preparatory school. Xvhen Captain Xlellen heard that he had been appointed the second principal of the school he stated that he would make no changes in the administration as orffanized by fllr. Iletmers. Through Captain Nlellen's unceasing effort the school 21 , was able to purchase the athletic field campaigned for by Xlr. Detmers. lVhen this was lost in 1919, he secured an appropriation from the City of Buffalo for the addition to the school which contains the gymnasia, cafeteria, laboratories, and swimming pool. He demonstrated his unselfish spirit by inviting the Klasten faculty and student body to use Lafayette when their own school burned. Captain lXIellen's patriotic 80 speeches during the first wo1'ld war stimulated the sale of bonds which reached one million dollars. During his administration honor upon honor was heaped upon Lafay- ette. Behind it all was Cap's magnanimous personality. It is little wonder that when he resigned in 1934 the city set aside a Captain Mellen week. In 1934, lVIr. Gott assumed the duties as principal of the school. VVith great admiration for the traditions and achievements of the past, Mr. Gott has helped the school to maintain the high standards established by Mr. Detmers and Captain Nlellen. In these crowded and difficult days when our school is called upon to play an even greater part in the life of our community and country, Lafayette appreciates Mr. Gott's untiring and efficient devotion. As we move on into the future, we are grateful for his fine leadership. Adam Compauyg the best work in the Buffalo exhibit was sent to Pittsburgh for national judging. The person who represented Lafayette in the girls' declamation contest of Buffalo was Janice Duban. Seymour Aberle did well in the boys' oratorical contest, receiving third place. Marsha Willer and Harold Levy were the school winners in the .Erie County American Legion essay contest. Under the able guidance of bliss VVechter, many have gained poise, character and the ability to speak well. After completing one term of Public Speaking and another of Dramatics, a student, who is a senior, and has made a public appearance of value to the school is entitled to a dramatic award given by the school. This year Lafayette has been fortunate enough to have a Speakers' Bureau. It is the duty of each speaker to give a speech to stimulate the sale of defense bonds and stamps. The vitality and sincerity of these speakers aroused the student body to show their patriotism by buying bonds and stamps. He arranged several Lafayette students in Indian dress. October 31st The boys viewed a film on Taping Technique with much interest. November 7th A football pep rally in preparation for the Grover Cleveland game. November 10th The annual Armistice Day program under the direction of the juniors, placing of the wreath on Memorial Stone. November 28th Mr. R. E. Belton, a negro singer, entertained us with a program of Spirituals. December Sth We debated South Park on the subject of Government Subsidized Housing and won. December 12th Annual Honor Roll Assembly. December 19th Mr. Bird of the Erie County Children's Court and Mr. Michael Catalano, Secretary to County judge Hamilton Ward, spoke. December 23rd The Annual Christmas program. A large group of Boy Scout Cubs from Memorial Cen- ter entertained us delightfully. january 13th julia Shlemon came to tell us of her native land, Persia. To a narration of her pere- sonal experiences she added a fascinating display of Persian handicraft. February 19th A very interesting assembly devoted to the Bill of Rights. February 26th Albert Payne, once a page boy in the House of Representatives, told many interesting things about his experiences in Washington. March 11th Lane K. Newberry answered many questions on VVhat Constitutes a Work of Art ? March 27th Lafayette debated Riverside on the question of Publicly Operated and Supported junior Colleges and won. April 14th Sibyl Shearer, and her partner, Allison Choate, gave a wonderful demonstration and interpretation of the modern dance. April 24th On the annual junior Day program a play entitled, Thanks Awfully , was presented to the delight of the audience. Harry Rutter, junior President, ofliciated. May lst The Senior Boys maintained the fine traditions of Arbor Day and planted a tree. Senior President, Charles Unbehaun, presided. May 22nd This assembly was dedicated to the' memory of Miss Alice T. Quirk, who contributed so much to the school life of the girls through her work in physical education. May 29th The Senior Girls presented the Memorial Day programg District Attorney Leo J. Hagerty was the guest speaker. The Boechat Post by means of an illuminated set of resolutions handed down the guardianship of Memorial Stone to the senior classes of Lafayette High School in an impressive ceremony. june Sth The girls presented a very attractive program and were given the usual awards of Letter Day. june 10th The entire school joined with the Juniors in helping Capt. and Mrs. Mellen to celebrate their golden wedding day.
