t I M M It 4% 4% Editor, Gerry Bagnatori Business Manager, Gayle Huxtable Our school was founded in 1955. The record of that year was recorded in the first Roundup. Through these four years of growth and progress, the history of La Sierra High School has been pictured. On the completion of our first four-year cycle, it is only logical that we look at our school and reali .e the opportunities that it offers. It is this wealth of opportunity we have tried to capture in the fourth volume of our yearbook. We hope the story pre- sented here will bring back memories of the happiest days of your life. While turning the pages of the 1959 ROUNDUP, we hope you will find a growing and an undying love for your school. In the years to come as you look back on your Alma Mater, the Roundup will help you relive those many enjoyable days at La Sierra High School. Without your patience and able assistance, the class activities would not have been carried out as successfully as they were. The students would not be- well prepared for assuming their responsibilities without having had your unfailing guidance. We, the Roundup staff of 1959, wish to express our gratitude and heart-felt appreciation by dedicating this, the portrait of our. high school life, to you, Mr. Robert B. Johnson, Jr., Principal of La Sierra High School. ROBERT B. JOHNSON, JR. Principal 9 CONTENTS BIG BOSSES Administration RANCH HANDS”. . . . THE VIGILANTES . . . J. ROLAND INGRAHAM, JR Dis I riel S it per in end ent 13 June, 1959, is here! Four years have passed since La Sierra opened its doors for the first time to three hundred and fifty freshmen. You. the members of the class of '59 and our first graduating class, have seen many realities come to be during these first four years of La Sierra's history. You have seen our physical plant facilities grow from practically nothing to that which we have now—a large high school. You have provided able student leadership in formulating a sound framework of student government. Your class has had an important role in helping La Sierra achieve success in all phases of its co-curricular program—dramatics, athletics, assemblies, music and social affairs. ROBERT B. JOHNSON, JR. Principal Members of the yearbook staff. I commend you for a very fine edition of the 'Roundup.' Each year the staff surpasses the work of the previous staff. This one is no exception. You as individuals can be proud of a job well done at La Sierra. You have left a high goal for other classes to strive for. It has been an extreme pleasure for me to have been able to work with you as your principal during your high school years. I take this opportunity to wish each graduating senior suc- cess in his every future endeavor. Cow Punchers MRS. F.LLA KNAPP Dean of Girls MR. ARTHUR CATE Dean of Boys MRS. JUNE NELSON Dmn 'A 17 MRS. The Girls’ League sponsored the dance, Twinkle Toes; the Student Director)'; the Girls' Assembly and the Annual May Parade. SEATED, left to right: F. Budkc, Secretary; W. The homeroom assembly has played an important role in the student council. It acts as one of the most helpful ad- visory groups to participate in student government. The purpose and function of the homeroom assembly is to provide a better opportunity for the students to become more closely represented in student government. The homeroom representatives are elected by the students of their homeroom. They represent these students and bring their ideas to the student council's attention and then report back to their homeroom. The assembly is of great importance to the student government and to the functioning of the school. FRESHMEN 35 SEATED, left to right: L. Ballcnger, C. Miller. C. Giltens. B. Sparks, D. Perdes. Much time and effort has gone into the producing of this yearbook for your enjoyment. Both major and minor problems arose but were adequately dealt with by the staff. A book is only pages between two covers, but our Roundup” is filled with events, places, and friends that we want to remember forever. It is hoped that everyone enjoys the yearbook and, on looking back at it, will remember those precious days of yesterday (or as they will come to be known by us all, the good ole’ days) as the best ever. As the mail must go through, so must the school newspaper. The Branding Iron Staff is constantly digging up news for articles, features, and columns. Above the clicking of typewriters, flashing of flashbulbs, and well . . . confusion, the busy editors can be seen putting pictures here and stories there to complete the newspaper. The Branding Iron is as important as the classroom books, for it informs the students of the school happenings— things to come or things that have happened. The Branding Iron has survived through the confusion of this year, and it will be here many, many more. The Staff BARBARA CORBETT CAROLYN WEBB ELIDA HOMER MRS. The addition of an outstanding group of junior ball- players greatly added to this effort. It was felt our ball club per- formed well in all departments and steadily improved throughout the season in spite of our performance in the Elk Grove game. Good, clean, hard-hitting football was played throughout the season. It was felt our success was more a team effort than individual. We’ll always remember that everyone on this team wanted to play football. Coach LeProtti stated, 'Tve known few teams that have worked as hard as this one and certainly none that have had a greater desire to win. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Plagued by injuries and the loss of five players to the J.V. team, the Frosh team did not post any wins during the season. Inexperience was another of the Frosh team’s difficul- ties. Coach Hall had to start from scratch, but by the end of the season the boys looked much better as their last few games were lost by only a few points. Ted Lewis was voted the best all-around player and Bruce McCrea was elected team captain. L.S. It has indeed been a pleasure to have worked with such cooperative staff and faculty mem- bers. This year's annual could not have been possible without their untiring help. It has been fun working for and with these wonderful people this past year and I hope our combined efforts have produced a year- book worthy to be called The Roundup. 0 Business Manager Behind this colorful book you hold are many hours which were spent in taking pictures, identify- ing people, and making detailed layouts of each page. Inspiration for the yearbook came from the photog- raphers, teachers, student body, and staff. To all of these, my sincere thanks. Later as you leaf through these pages and relive your high school days, may this book grow in value and bring joyful remembrance for all the years to come. May you remember and cherish the challenge, accomplishments, and above all, your friends at La Sierra High School.
