COLONIAL INGENIOUS English II students John Ferranti Ron Johnson and Martha Graham-completed an attractive bulletin board related to their current study on colonial settlements EXCITING MOMENTS, like participating in the annual English Department-sponsored Spelling Bee, brightened up the year for LaPHS students. Nor would they ever forget seeing their creative work-poetry, essays, short stories-come to life in print in the school's literary magazine, Reflec- tins. The in- structors wished to develop in the students skills in all four divisions of Language Arts-speaking, writing, reading, and listening, They also real- ized that in order to play a good game in life the students must learn to develop critical thunk ing and logical processes of organization In all areas To complete the passes of this intricate game of words the English Department set up a program offering various courses English I ll Ill were required for graduation but those going to college also took English IV Practical courses In Journalism I writing for the news paper and Journalism Il editing the yearbook were also included in the English curnculum Drama and Public Speaking rounded out the de partment electives With the first hand knowl edge gain in panel discussions Informal de bates unit prolects in literature educational movies and field trips students found they were better able to communicate with one another English Teachers instructed All Students EDMUND F AIREY BA MA St John s College Los Angeles Loyola University Engllsh I II ROBERT R CALLANDER B A M A Union Colle e Schenectad N Y 9 Y JEANNE c COOK BA MA ARTHUR B ERICKSON BA L05 Angeles Stole College New York State College University of Washington Eflgllshl '11 Englzsh 1 111 Fnglzsh 1 111 IV Adviser Reflections Assistant FTA Publications Club qw' ' 25 AP
