Marino Forces llnita Histor ' arine Forces Unitas is a United States Marine Corps Infantry unit designed to operate in conjunction with the annual Unitas exercise in South America. The exercise is a five month Joint Navy!Marine Corps exercise that began in 1959 as strictly naval operation. In 1981, it was expanded to include the amphibious operations of the Marines. The exercise typically runs each year between July and December, involving the participation of countries such as: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and France. Over the years, the amphibious portion of the exercise has evolved to those missions of a Reinforced Mecha- nized Rifle Company C-J of MarinCS. Thfi unit is specifically organized and trained to operate with the Marines of the various participating countries. Operating from either a Landing Ship, Tank CLSDJ, the Marines conduct amphibious landings, infantry operations ashore, Weapons cross training, professional symposia, and community relations projects. Typical operations involve a combined U.S. and South America Marine battalion size landing, with each country providing one company with an Amphibious Assault Vehicle CAAVD Platoon of 12 tracked vehicles, during initial exercises the unit is supported by a helicopter detachment. The unit is capable of conducting amphibious operations in the air, on land and sea. Marine Forces Unitas is unique in that is not a standing unit, but created each year specially for the annual exercise. The Marines come from the various air, ground and support units of the Il Marines Expeditionary Force which is headquartered in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Unitas, Whose Latin meaning is 4'Unity,', provides the Marine and Sailors of the U.S. Navy!Marine Corps team a tremendous opportunity to participate ini the Joint South American training exercises, cultivating stronger ties with our foreign allies. .
