3 Phase Zero - U.S.!PROA All events delayed due Hurricane Evasion to Guantanamo Bay, A Cuba. ' Conducted tactical maneuvering drills, flaghoist, flashing light, teletype drills, and man over- board!GQ drills. ' Conducted heloborne assault on Vieques Island AOA in addition to underway AAV assault. Phase Two - Brazil A ' Conducted 2 ASW events and 5 COMM events. ' Enjoyed port visits to Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. ' Conducted amphibious launch at Ihle do Marambaia AOA with BNS Mattosa Maia and BNS Rio de Janeiro. ' Lost gracefully in a volleyball tournament held in Mattosa Maia's Tank Deck. Phase Three - Uruguay ' Participated in numerous protocol events including visit ship, wreath laying ceremony, ship tourllunch with Uruguay an midshipmen and Uruguayan FUSNA forces, and an officers reception. ' Enjoyed week-long stay inport Montevideo. ' Several events delayedglcancelled due high sea statelinclement weather. Phase Four - Argentina Conducted 2 AAW events, 4 COMM events, and 1 Freeplay Exercise. Enjoyed port visits to Puerto Belgrano and Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Conducted two successful am- phibious launches at Baliza Chica AOA and Estancia Las Violetas AOA. Phase Five - Chile Conducted 2 ASW events, 3 COMM events, and 2 Freeplay Exercises. Enjoyed port visits to Puerto Williams, Talcahuano, Coquimbo, and Valparaiso. Conducted amphibious static demonstration at Playa Los Marineros and launch at Puerto Aldea AOA with AAV launch and recovery training onboard LST Valdivia. Transited Chilean inland waterways and Magellan Straits. Phase Six Paraguay Inland riverine phase conducted by II MEF MARFOR UNITAS Detachment. Phase Seven - Peru Conducted 3 ASW events, 6 AAW events, 1 ASUW event, 45 EW! COMM events, and 2 Freeplay Exercises. Conducted visit ships 4 times, various symposia, and an officers reception. Enjoyed port visit in Callao!Lima. Conducted amphibious launch with BAP Eten and BAP Callao at Salinas AOA. Crossdecked two officers in BAP Eten and BAP Callao. Phase Eight - Ecuador Conducted 2 ASW events and 2 EW! COMM events. Enjoyed port visits to Salinas and Manta. Conducted underway launch at 12 kts at Valdivia AOA with insertion! extraction support from USS Typhoon and USS Sirocco. Conducted COMREL project inport Salinas at Santa Rosa Escuela de Salinas. A very rewarding event for the La Moure County officers and crew. Phase Nine - Columbia A very busy and challenging phase. Conducted S ASW events, 11 AAW events, 2 ASUW events, 39 EW! COMM events, and 5 Freeplay Exercises. A No amphibious events sked, but received training in all other warfare areas. Enjoyed port visits to Malaga and Cartagena. ' UNITAS is a deployment with rich tradition and a reputation of sustained, multi-national operations for 37 consecu- tive years. 9 0 Each year an amphibious ship is tasked to participate in UNITAS. 1996 was the first year in which a Naval Reserve ship participated in all phases of UNITAS.
