THIS DEPARTMENT CONDUCTS ALL TOPSIDE OPER- ATIONS INCLUDING LAUNCHING AND RECOVERING LANDING CRAFT FROM THE TANK DECK, HELICOPTER OPERATIONS, ALONGSIDE REPLENISHMENT AND REFUELING, SMALL BOAT OPER- A ATIONS, ANCHORING, AND CARGO HANDLING USING BOTH CRANES AND FORKLIFTS. IN ADDI- TION, THE BOATSWAIN'S MATES AND SEAMEN OF THE DEPARTMENT KEEP THE SHIP LOOKING HER BEST THROUGH CONSTANT TOPSIDE MAINTENANCE AND PRESERVATION. THE DEPART- MENT MAINTAINS MOST OF THE WORK SPACES AND BERTHING COMPARTMENTS ROUTINELY UTILIZED BY EMBARKED MARINES. THE GUNNER'S MATES ARE IN CHARGE OF ALL AMMUNI- TION STORAGE AND HANDLING FOR BOTH THE NAVY AND MARINES. THEY OVERSEE TRAINING ON THE SHIP'S 25 MILLIMETER GUNS, MACHINE GUNS, AND SMALL ARMS.
