Khadafi. ln twenty years when you show your children this yearbook, these words will bring to mind many memories of your life in 1986 We have captured observations in outer space, on our planet, and around our school. 1986 is unique for you because for the first, and most likely the last time, you will be able to observe Hal- ley s Comet, an occurrence which happens only every 76 years. To commemorate the passing of Halley's Comet. Country Day has built an obser- vatory which will allow us to better understand the gallaxy in which we live. Outdoor Education provided Country Day students with an opportunity to observe the planet they inhabit and put them in closer touch with the world out there. Our 11th and 12th graders previewed East and West Coast colleges, 10th grade hiked the Bryce and Zion trails. Oth grade exper- ienced nature face to face in Yosemite, 8th grade retreated to the wilderness of Big Bear, 7th grade learned about ma- rine life at Catalina, and Lower School took many assorted educational field trips. As we focus our telescope on Country Day, we observe a fun-packed, educa- tianally-alive environment. Starting the year with a bang, Student Council passed out lollipops and bubbles to wel- come students back to school. And be- fore we knew it, it was time for the 3rd annual Country Faire, 7th annual Grand- parents' Day, the 3rd annual Career Day, and a brand new experience for Country Day - our first annual Homecoming! Home- coming kicked off with Spirit Week and fin- ished with a formal dance and a victory over Parker that clinched our first coastal league title in 13 years. As time moved on. we enjoyed the Holiday Concert performed by grades 9-12 and final exams performed by grades 9-12. Semester break was a welcome relief. In the spring we enjoyed the Middle School Biography Faire, the Festival of the Arts, and as- sorted school plays. We have preserved for you many other observa- tions of the '8O's on the following pages, including our Time Capsule at the end of the book. Twenty years from now when your children open this book they'll laugh at stretch pants, charm necklaces and Hard Rock Cafe t- shirts And thirty years from now your kids will be wearing stretch pants charm necklaces. and Hard Rock Cafe t-shirts. And so with no further ado, we take you back to the present where you can enioy the memories of 1986. fl if rim, lf l ri? we . is 1 Recess is my favorite subject! Most of the new members are just out of college, and we see very few grey hairs in the new crop. Nl think the students are terrific, says Mrs. Jones, who replaced Barbara Grant as Upper School Secretary. Other new members include Tom Perrotti and Barry Fogwell in the Science department, Ted Hodgson in Math, Bill Wright in Math and History, Louis Cornelia, filling in for vacationing Senora McCuen, Susan Middleton, the Upper School Librarian, and Shanda Shipman, Mrs. Cox's new secretary. The new and experienced faculty were given the respect and admiration they deserve during Faculty Appreciation Week, a time for students to let the teachers and staff know just how much they mean. On Monday, the sopho- mores decorated their lounge and presented the faculty with invitations to the luncheon on Friday. 'tlt was fun! laughs Jocelyn Belice. 'lWe kind of raided their refrigerator. They had some good stuff in there! On Tuesday, the juniors gave out carnations to each faculty member, and Wednesday brought breakfast and thank you cards from the freshman class. The seniors treated them to ice cream sundaes and apples on Thursday. The big event of the week was the luncheon on Friday in which everyone participated. Students and teachers gorged down food as the junior class treated the Upper School to a raffle, led by Larry Hovey and Jim Eshom. With new faces, new courses, and new and different perspectives, the Upper School experienced an exciting year. Madonna made an appearance an Celebrity Day during Spirit Week. She has an uncanny V resemblance to Mr Wright, don't you think? . if he Middle School faculTy experienced several new addiTions in 4985-6. These were Connie Leonard in 5Th grade: Joyce Dalessandro in 6Th5 and Sharilyn MounT, Elahe Joubine-Saba, and RuTh CarleTon in 7Th. New and reTurning faculTy were all very involved in sTu- denT life. As well as Taking parT in ouTdoor educaTion Trips, some facuITy members joined sTudenTs on specialized field Trips. The 6Th graders wenT To Sharp Memorial HospiTal, and The 5Th grade Took a Trip To Ruben H. FIeeT Space Museum in honor of The appearance of HaIley's ComeT. The Middle School science Teachers are especially inTeresTed in This phenomenon. Science classes of all four grades have devoTed some Time To iTs sTudy, and The Teachers have aTTended special seminars To learn more abouT The com- eT. STudenT-Teacher reIaTions in The Middle School reached an all-Time high in T985-6. A survey of The sTudenTs showed This, and Ellen Simms agrees. The relaTionship is posiTive, she said. The Teachers and The sTudenTs are very friendly. The sTudenT council is formulaTing a FaculTy AppreciaTion Day similar To ThaT of The Upper School To mainTain This favorable Trend. FaculTy members were es- pecially close because They Took The Time To celebraTe each oTher's birThdays, help one anoTher ouT wiTh classes, and cover for each oTher if someone was sick. There is a new bond ThaT is bringing The facuiTy TogeTher This year. T? The new Middle School faculfy lounge provides a repos? and a quieT place To sTudy for Nancy EckenroTh and Elah Joubine-Saba.
