This was very appropriate, as there is an interest in volleyball among L.J .C.D.S. students and parents as never before. Spectators fill the bleachers at every game. Six veterans and ten rookies are on the team roster, and many of these girls attended volleyball camps and joined volleyball clubs over the summer. The improvements were evident in their style of playing. It was more aggressive volleyball than in previous years, and with the help of Mrs. Gans' coaching, the team had their best year ever: a 10-win 2-loss record that took them to the C.I.F. finals. There, Francis Parker School won by a close score of 15-13, 15-12 in the most exciting and competitive game of the season. Barbara Wright, Debbie McCoy, Maria Judy, Erin Smith, Mary Beverly, Jodi Wigley, Karen Becka, Sharon Burges, and Sally McCoy make up the varsity team. Barbara Wright received the honor of being named on the All-C.I.F. First Team. The junior varsity consists of freshmen and new students: Kathy Stafford, Margie Milligan, Kristen Ralph, Beth Royer, Wyndham Elliott, Randi Shaw, Stacy Tomp- kins, and Judy Beckett, The Country Day Volleyball team has a bright future, hav- ing only four graduating seniors and a lot of available talent from the J.V. Over the years, the team has been able to maintain the enthusiasm and the spirit needed to win games and have fun at the same time. 1?-3-7,-ff . , -0 fm-- .IQ Y, . -41 . ABNF '47- -Q' For the second consecutive year the Torres were the top cross country team in California for schools with enrollments under 500. Only a series of events during the final weeks of the season prevented the team from winning the first CIF championship ever by a Southern League Team. During season the team defeated 85 teams from four states, tied one and lost to seven others. Five of those losses were to teams which later won state ships, CIF section championships or were runners up in section meets. The team won three major invitationals, tied for first in one and was runner a fifth. Torres runners, besides winning the Southern League for the second year in a row, took half of the All-League awards. Brian Davis and Erik became the first ever All-ClF cross country runners from the Southern League. Co-Team Captains Davis and Don Davidson provided superb during the season. Senior Hjermstad and four year letterman Bill Pollock will be missed next year. Rachelle Smith established herself as a distance with a future by winning several medals and a trophy during the season. Top runner of the year was freshman Andy Morabe, undefeated in dual meets, winning three invitationals and finishing second in two others. clocked the fastest time of over 2,000 freshman at the prestigious Mt. Greg Resnick, Dan Draz, Mark Fuller, Tim Holcombe, George Kutchins, Mike Kearns, Jay Ritt, Coach Sullivan fkneelingj Waters, John Beverly Thirty-second drills, full court presses, and three-man weaves are all part ofthe rigorous practices designed by Coach Cahoone and Coach Sullivan for the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. The long hours put in by the players paid off in their fine performances this year. Junior Varsity was very impressive, George Kutchins, and Dan Draz are strong Varsity potentials for next year. The starting five of the Varsity squad is made up of seasoned Country Day veterans: Steve Baak, Erik Hjermstad, Kevin Reed, Mike Drogin, and Ron Keller, with Byron Kim as number one alternate. Unfortunately, the Varsity team was plagued with injuries this year. At least one starter missed a game be- cause of injuries and at one time the Torres were short two starters for three games. Considering their position, Var- sity played commendably. The high- lights ofthe season were the league en- counters against Francis Parker and Army-Navy, in which the closing sec- onds determined the outcome. X V f' Yearbook started off with high aspirations. Summer meetings were held cuss innovative and exciting ideas for the 78' yearbook. However, we found actual production was a different matter entirely. Like rats leaving a sinking ship, people left our staff as deadlines grew and more ominous. Tempera flared. fists flew, and hair was pulled as g disappeared mysteriously and enlargers self-destructed. Poor male photograpl and copy-boys found themselves beaten. whipped. and emaseulated by the wh of the all-female editing staff. Yet. despite the shortness of our chief editor. yearbook was published without undue delay. tln fact, you might be rcadin right now.j The yearbook sole survivors : Sitting in the see-saw: Debbie McCoy.
